The best advice book for people who want to go and stay vegan about dealing with all the non-vegan bullshit they will inevitably encounter from other people. The most helpful piece of advice is these three words: MEEK VEGANS SUFFER!

This book will teach you to be a strong vegan and not compromise your animal rights ethics just to fit in to the dominator culture, which is full of people who are always looking for an excuse to justify animal exploitation. I'd recommend borrowing this book fro...more

I was honestly not expecting much from this book, but it turned out to be an incredible resource, even though I assumed I already knew a lot about veganism (being a vegan for several months and having a seasoned vegan boyfriend).

This book goes over a lot of really practical issues that vegans deal with quite regularly. The tireless prodding from friends, family and co-workers about "what do you EAT?" and how to deal with them tactfully. It gives some great suggestions and recommen...more

Bob Torres and Jenna Torres address many of the comical situations in which Vegans find ourselves on a daily basis and lend a hand in raising our collective morale as well as strengthening our commitment.

The book is hilariously vulgar and sarcastic as it helps the reader to navigate difficult social encounters with family, friends, and strangers. I felt my confidence in the caus...more

I loved this book. (I am a vegan, mostly for animal suffering reasons, as are the authors.) In my opinion, this is the best support book for vegans out there (also see Living Among Meat Eaters by Carol Adams). I do have to admit, I felt angry at times during the reading of this book. In my opinion, it kind of encourages outrage. So, for those already unfriendly toward vegans or veganism in general, or those just mildly curious but largely ignorant about the lifestyle or the message promoted in t...more

I am sorry to say that I went un-vegan while reading this book. Not because of the book but, due to certain events, I have accepted dairy. In a way I'm kind of sad because, being vegan, you really DO feel like a freak. A freak without a ship to sail on. That is until you meet Bob and Jenna Torres, your new captains. They will guide you through some pretty solid information about veganism and animal rights and, although I no longer ride with their beliefs, I definitely recommend this for a...more

I have a hard time rating this book. I liked their attitude a lot, but it just didn't seem particularly insightful or unique. It might be most valuable to someone new to veganism as it gives some good advice about not being a judgmental bore - but everything else in the book seems like it could be better found with a quick search on the internet. In fact, they spend a lot of time pointing out great sites to look at, which again - might be good info for a new vegan - but would also be easy to fin...more

The appendix is the most interesting and useful part of this book.

I was surprised to learn that most beers go through a finishing process that uses the swim bladders of fish. Who ever thought beer wasn't vegetarian?!! Is your favorite beer vegan? You can find out here: http://www.veganconnection.com.... Lots of wines include egg parts, dried blood, or pepsin (from pork!), although I have to assume that kosher w...more

This book is a great read, but is sort of hub literature for reading further into ethical veganism. The married couple who wrote the book have PhDs and know their shit. Its also really nice because its written from people with a punk ethics background that approach veganism from an AR stand point rather than a health stand point. Lots of good tips on how to handle situations as well as tips for eating out and on the road. I could have used this book while I was traveling. Has a great resour...more

recommends it for: Everyone wishing to become a little less ignorant in the world of veganism
For some reason the rating feature is not working with the browser I'm on, but I would give this book three stars if it were possible.
This book is written with an Animal Rights intro and some satirical advice towards the end, and the appendix lists '25 things you can do to get involved' a few of which have nothing to do with actually being vegan (adopting animals from shelters).
The authors are enthusiastic and experienced in the world of veganism and AR, making it an interesting, though mild...more

While I admit that this isn't the best book for non-vegans to start with, I think it serves its purpose quite well. Many of us have more than enough vegan cookbooks and animal rights literature filling our shelves, and Vegan Freak offers something new; the idea that sometimes being vegan affects more than just your dinner plate.

It does come off preachy at times, but I think it's generally meant to be 'preaching to the choir.' I don't believe its aim is necessarily to recruit new vegan...more

I bought this book hoping that it would offer a lot of information and advice for how to round out a vegan diet. That was definitely not what this was about. It was more of a lengthy rant on the ethical virtues of veganism (health benefits excluded). I think what makes this difficult is that it continues in the narrative of "holier than thou" food politics that make it so hard for other people to understand, and accommodate, vegan diets. The rants themselves are fine, although polemica...more

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand a vegan or anyone who is considering becoming vegan. It's written by a husband and wife who are vegan. It discusses their transistion from meat eating to veganism & all of the shit they dealt with along the way and are still dealing with. It really "speaks" to us vegans while also explaining to those who don't really understand what we deal with on a daily basis from those around us.

This book isn't horrible, but it's just pretty pointless. So maybe it is horrible? Problem is, the authors give valid information, it just seems like it's weighed down with really pointless and not so helpful personal stories. Also, it seems like the book is mainly dropping titles to other books for more information. I guess I just feel like the authors could have simply published the appendix and called it a day.

Really quick read for new vegans. All those quick questions with short answers are addressed in this book. The thing I appreciated most about it was all the "READ MORE" references to other sources and books. This is just an introduction for new vegans!!! Oh, and the authors have a great podcast at veganfreakradio.com (I think it's .com...google it and you'll find them).

A lot of information about animal rights and reasons for going vegan that I was already familiar with. It does do a good job of presenting veganism from the complete perspective, and will make you wonder how much you're doing and where you fall on the spectrum. A good read for those considering veganism, but a little redundant for those already eating/living that way.

This book is a good primer for going vegan. It also helps you not feel like you're the only one. It's not going to go super in-depth because, it's an overview. It's also nice because they have sources listed and you can go look up their books too. I love this book. Bob and Jenna are amazing.

Even if you're not vegan, it's still a nice thing to read.

I was very excited about this book, but the actual contents were somewhat of a letdown. It was written in a very insular way. I felt like I didn't know the secret handshake or something. There are some good tips and resources, but it seems a little self-indulgent in terms of focusing on the authors' own lives.

Some of the information is good, but I didn't particularly enjoy the snobbish, holier-than-thou attitudes of the authors. I think this book would turn omnivores and even vegetarians off to the idea of veganism based on the authors' communication style. The book is just not all that well-written.

Written in a fun, lively style with lots of information about being vegan. Best for new or aspiring vegans. Slim book, easy read.

For a more in-depth treatment/advice of living in a non-vegan world, I recommend and prefer Living Among Meat Eaters by Carol Adams.
