Picked this book aout in a hurry in a bookstore in Oslo. The story sounded interesting and it was from a Norwegian author, got a bookprice in 2012, so I bought it.
My expectations were not dissappointed. I liked the wriing style of the author, easy to read and fetching at the same time. He mixes up the stories of the pyromaniac of his hometown and his own autobiography, jumps between the timelines and characters which is sometimes confusing but also prevents the reader getting bored.

Heivoll investigates the story of a pyromaniac who has terrorized his village in the summer where he was baptised. He interweaves this story to the story his own life. The book addresses a theme often found in the literature of Norway, that of madness.
The weakness of this book is that Heivoll remains to the acts of the pyromaniac. He cannot explain his motivation.
An interesting part is the description of people lives in a small Norwegian village.

Meget godt skrevet!
A catching story from a small place in norway. Two stories told at the same time, but with aprox 30 years differens. Gaute heivol tell these stories in a fascinating way, so much so that it is as if the pages turn by themselves. I don't know if it is going to be translated into english, but read it if you get the chance.
I've heard several people say that this was a good - or even an excellent - book but I can't agree with them. The story remained distant to me, I could not relate to it even though I also was an obedient and conscientious child and I also feel that I have let down the (occupational) expectations of my parents. Still, I found the text rambling and tiresome. Not the worst book I've read but somehow there was nothing for me...

Heivoll writes beautifully, even when there was nothing interesting happening, his words made me read on. The story is quite interesting if you look at it as a coming-of-age story and compare the lives of Heivoll and the pyroman. Melancholic and entertaining.
One word- sublime!
