I was involved from first page to last. I felt an intimacy with the characters (often it seemed like I was eavesdropping on conversations) and was awestruck by the intense sense of atmosphere. The fine-tuned details, and the puzzle-piece plot reminded me so much of classic storytellers... Edith Wharton, E.M. Forster, Sinclair Lewis, Willa Cather.

I liked the way she told the story of families and the complicated relationships people have. The setting is a wedding in Wisconsin during a snowstorm, and she tells the story in 3rd person by switching from one character to another fluidly. Kind of like the bad guy in Terminator II when he would just take over a person by touching him; that's how the author changes points of view. You get to see different perspectives. There's also a small bit of intrigue around a stranger to the party, som...more

This was a really interesting book- it was about a wedding taking place in the midwest during a storm- the coming together of the two mismatched families and the colorful relatives on each side- as well the bride's ex-boyfriend who makes an appearance...it is funny, and sad at the same time...but written from a really interesting perspective. Depicting what its really like for all the individuals to come together for an event like a wedding - and what goes through each guests mind...insightful y...more

I figure if I'm halfway through a book and it hasn't grabbed me, it probably never will. I tried, I tried but the meandering tone and the jumping from character to character was distressing to me. Who is the main character? Is there one? Is there a protagonist? Is there a plot? Are we just going to meander aimlessly through the lives of many random family members and a few unnamed hotel guests? I guess I need rising action, climax, etc.

There was nothing inherently wrong this book except for the fact that I didn't really get the point. It had the makings for an interesting story - quirky lodge, wedding, disapproving family members, murder. But nothing really happened and I was kind of bored with it. I was at least expecting some major conflict or resolution of the issues presented in the beginning of the story and neither occurred. Meh.

Midnight Champagne is about a quicky wedding where the guests tongues are wagging about the couple, their own marriages, and the locale of the ceremony (a wedding chapel/hall rumored to be a whorehouse). There's a jilted high school sweetheart, a mysterious wedding crasher, and a dead woman in one of the rooms -- lots of great characters. I would definitely recommend it.

When will I learn? Another impulse book. Very forgettable. The happenings at a wedding during a Wisconsin snowstorm are entangled with the death of a guest at the same hotel. Supposedly, this author has some other good books. (P.S. turns out this book was on my list after all. Who is recommending these books?)

Reading this book made me grateful for the way my family behaved at my wedding! It is a story about all the complicated emotions and expectations both families bring to a wedding. The contrast between young lovers experiencing a whirlwind romance and the jilted and soured relationships of their relatives was captivating.

The two-star definition of "ok" aptly describes this book. While I enjoyed the locale and the idea of the wedding itself, I was disappointed in never really getting to understand what made many of the characters tick. Some characters were introduced, yet their behaviors were never explained. Eh.

This is not a life changing book- it does not have a particularly fascinating plot, no interesting twists... however, I thought it was a FUN, EASY, QUICK, and entertaing read- just what I was in the mood for! A fun setting (a wedding at a brothel), interesting characters, and murder... !
I loved this book. i'm surprised to see so many people were left feeling luke-warm about it. It intrigued me from the start and i've been looking for more books by this author. I didn't want it to end!

It's about a wedding party and the individual members of the family involved (their relationships, their own marriages). I really like the way she writes but the topic is marginally interesting.

The story was interesting, but the author's indulgence in the descriptive turned what could have been a really great short story into a long winded novel.

I wanted to like this more than I did. The author was trying so hard to write a subtly compelling story, but it never grabbed me.

A quick read, but that might have been because there was very little character and/or plot development.
