The unvanquished truth is how Freak would say it and for a long time, it was him who did the talking.” Max is a third grader, but he sure doesn’t look like one. Anyone who enjosys a good booj.
Freak the Mighty was just a really good book. it is sad what happens at the end, but the entire story line between the two main characters Freak, and Mighty was just complexing.
both are attracted to each other because one is big without so much of a mind, the other is small but with a large mind.
Freak known as KEVIN in the story is a boy with a birth defect. his body is very small and fragile and cannot hold itself up. however, he has the brain of someone say three times his age or you could...more

Ive said this a lot, but this is my all-time favorite book of them all. Freak reminds me of Jonas from The Giver. I love Freak. Freak taught me a lot of things.
"Books are like truth serum. If you dont read, you can't figure out what is real." - Kevin, Freak the Mighty
Freak also taught me what Strontium Nitrate was and what a troglodyte is and an archetype and most of all, Live life to its fullest. I also know that imagination is a state of the mind. You can think your way ou...more

Maxwell is the main character of this book and hes a teenage boy in the 8th grade. He lives with his grandparents because his father was in prison for killing Max's mother. People in school think he's a freak but not freaky enough to hang around a kid named Kevin who had a birth effect that left him having braces and crutches. But together they become friends and prove everyone wrong. Both Max and Kevin become Freak the Mighty and go through many changes together. They both go into a really good...more

Yet another book that I read because one of my kids was asked to read it. When a book becomes quickly popular, it makes me curious, especially if it's being pushed by public schools.
It is a very touching story, and I admit that it even made me cry. Maybe that's easy to do. Max is a big kid who doesn't understand his own life and doesn't understand why he has to look exactly like his father -- the one who killed his mother. When "Freak" moves into town, Max begins to discover wh...more

Anyone who loves a story about true friendship
This is a lovely, offbeat book about the unlikely friendship between two boys who seem to share nothing in common. Max is very big for his age, and thinks he isn't very smart, while Kevin has a birth defect that causes him to stay very small. He's also brilliant! The two team up, Max carrying Kevin on his shoulders, and become Freak the Mighty, going on quests to assist those in need and living life to its fullest in every adventure. The story is told from Max's point of view, and we learn a...more

I must find other works by Philbrick -- he is an amazing author. Max is a giant of a boy, and doesn't feel he is very smart. Worse, his father has been imprisoned for a horrible crime, and his grandparents are now raising him. His life and outlook change when he meets Kevin, a very tiny boy his age with an incredible -- and highly imaginative -- mind. They team up, with Kevin helping Max with homework and independent thinking, and Max serving as the disabled Kevin's legs. A wonderful read, which...more

My favorite book, ever....everyone has one book that they couldn't put down...it also was the book that you could really relate too. this is that book. this book is all about friendship and the adventures that you can go with that person. i found this extremely sentimental because i just happened to have a similar situation happen to me when i was younger. i actually randomnly saw this movie over the weekend and it brought back so many feelings, especially the feelings that i had when i read...more

This book is a realistic fiction book about two boys with special needs that find each other and unite into an unbeatable pair. Maxwell and Kevin, nicknamed Freak, have difficult issues to face in their lives. Max, who is very large and has a learning disability, lives with his grandparents because his mother was killed when he was four. His father is in jail. Freak, who lives with his mother, is crippled and can't get around very easily. They become friends and together become "Freak The ...more

Freak the Mighty is a tear jerking story about two total opposites that become best friends. The 2 main characters, Max and Kevin a.k.a Freak the Mighty lead amazing unpredictable lives, they went on quests and fought dragons. The book is very good, the action really ramps up toward the end leading to a sad but satisfying ending. The ending is satisfying because once you've finished the book you immediately realize that you have just read something that you will always remember as one of the b...more

This is a fun book, and the kids love it (I teach junior high and cover this book every year). It's the story of an unlikely friendship between a very small boy with health problems and a short life span, and a very large boy whose childhood has been pretty rough. There is a little bit of language that might deter some teachers, but I've found that the kids can get past it for the story. There are a lot of fun adventures, some great lessons, and some tough issues that the boys go through toge...more

Middle schoolers
Freak the Mighty is about the friendship of two boys living in a small town who balance each other out beautifully. One's strength is the others weakness. They need each other to face a world that does not always understand the challenges faced by disabled/ special needs individuals. Themes tackled throughout the books include stereotypes, coming of age, death, domestic violence, loss of parents, and appreciating differences. Although this book is geared towards middle schoolers, some of the hum...more

This is, hands down, my favorite book ever and has been since I read it in the sixth grade. I fell in love with Max and Freak when I first read it and that hasn't changed at all. I actually read it after seeing the movie and seeing the book credited at the end.
Freak and Max taught me a lot, like what's in fireworks that makes them different colors and that chili powder mixed with soap, while it can't eat car paint, hurts a lot if you get it in your eyes. Most importantly, it taught me how t...more

I have to admit. This book was okay and slightly on the boring side. I liked how the author gave really good descriptions to the scene. However, what wasn't really surprising about this book was that it was not really in a way that I can understand fully what's going on. I didn't like how the author jsut skips ahead without enough information for the reader to know about.

This book just had sort of a creepy overall feel to me (much like I felt about Flowers for Algernon, although worse - just depressing). I didn't really connect to any of the characters (and frankly, I felt a little like Freak was using Max, although I'm pretty confident that wasn't what was intended), and I was just glad when it was done. I took it back to the library as soon as I could just so I wouldn't have to look at it anymore.

wow. this is a really good and funny and sad book. this book is mostly about 2 boys that need help in things and they both have what the other needs. freak needed legs, he was a small kid and couldnt walk right, but he was very smart. max needed a brain, he didnt know how to read well or right well, he was very tall and big. they both got together and got to be the bestest friends. they faced obstacles that changed their life. it is sad at the end. read the whole book to find out why =]

My students love this as a read-aloud year after year. I love its Arthurian motifs, its authentic narrative voice, its humor, and its several themes, not the least of which is "have dictionary, will travel (far)."
Movie adaptation is surprisingly good, if not entirely perfect. The basketball scene feels lifted from A Prayer for Owen Meany, and Kevin's slide down the hill is "numb," to quote Max.
I should add my thanks to Danis Kriemeier for recommending this on

I liked the story in this book. I love the friendship. I liked the concept portrayed that we all can be more than what the world sets limits on us to be. While I didn't care for some of the words used over and over (no swearing, just words I don't like to say or hear), it was very much a part of who Max was. And who Freak the Mighty was. A well done, simple story. In some ways predictable, but still handled very well. If I hadn't been so tired, I probably would have had some tears.

This book is great for middle school students. I teach 7th grade, and I always recommend this book. The kids who can understand struggle and who are compassionate love it. 2 kids who are considered "freaks" develop a deep friendship with each other. One is a very large boy who struggles in school and is severely abused, and the other is a dwarf who is imaginative and intelligent. It is inspirational and has a sad ending, but it's worth it.
