This is the first in a series, and I'm ashamed to say I haven't read them all, but not because I didn't love this book. Unlike most of the known universe I'm not a big fan of McMurtry's westerns. I know, I know. But I love his contemporary books, like Texasville and Dwayne's Depressed, and Some Can Whistle. This is the first of his historicals I've really liked. Perhaps because it's about the time and place I wrote my master's thesis on in graduate school: the West, which was the Louisiana Terri...more

So surprising! I've never liked Westerns per say, so it was random I ever picked up this series ... however, I LOVED it! It was really interesting because you have this harsh, barbaric, unforgiving environment juxtaposed with a very civilized English family, which is more the life we can relate to in the modern day. That dichotomy made me, a modern reader, much more sympathetic to the horrors they encountered. Their perspective was much like the modern reader's, accustomed to everyday convenienc...more

There are no other western Authors that I read leaving Larry McMurty in a genre all by himself for me. I've yet to pick-up one of his westerns that I didn't enjoy. This novel is no exception. It is a wonderful combination of adventure and comedy set in 19th century western America. The mixing of a aristocratic British family with completely realistic American characters of that time period is filled with wonderful moments and I'm very happy to see that there is a going to be a series of book...more

This is the first book of four in the Berrybender Narratives series (the others are "The Wandering Hill", "By Sorrow's River", and "Folly and Glory"). They follow the adventures of the Berrybender family, a large English family, as they travel around the wild American West in the 1830s. The West was a dangerous place back then and death is always lurking, but Larry McMurtry keeps you laughing.

I'm starting to think that every Larry McMurtry western was written just for me to read! This is the first in the Berrybender series of 4. The characters, like all characters in McMurtry books, are vivid and comic even when they meet doom. I can't wait to read the other three, but I'll give myself a couple of other good non-fiction reads before I move on. When I finish the series I'm sure I'll get that sadness you do when you've finished a book and feel like you've lost a friend!

This is the first in the Berrybender Narratives, Old West theme with a spoiled rotten, rich English family exploring/exploiting the New Frontier. There are four in the series and they will captivate you like the old beach novels in our youth, yet appeal to your intelligence in the depiction of the native peoples, the land and notable historical figures this family encounters.

I started this series as a change of pace from my usual preferences (more "literary" or classic genres). The characters in this book can be utterly obnoxious, but stick with the series, and the reader will be able to see some real growth. Very graphic depictions of deaths, torture, etc ensue throught the entire series. Not your run of the mill Western...

I listened to this on CD, and it was slow-going at first, until I could get into both the author's and narrator's rhythms. I don't think I've ever read a Western before, but it was fun, and McMurtry is a good storytellermixing bits of slapstick into the general drama.

This series is so much fun to read. It's excellent historical fiction, and also very interesting and funny. The main characters, the Berrybenders, are ridiculous and their antics will make you laugh out loud. All the books are pretty short and move at a fast pace, too.

Loved this! I listened to it on unabridged audio. It's the story of a high born English family, and their ridiculous entourage who have come to the American West, so the father can hunt. It is ironic and hilarious. Dry humor. Love it!

I read this on a trip with Johnn when I had nothing else to read but one of the books he brought . . . remind me to just hit myself on the head with a big rock if I am ever tempted to read another one these. Good grief!

Hard to get into at first, especially if you're expecting characters like Lonesome Dove. These characters are just as interesting but not as likable from the get-go. They improve as the series goes along.

I love Larry McMurtry. He seems to get how tough the old west was. Not clean often with a chance of death at any moment. This is the first of a series. Good thing to read on the train or an airplane.

Hilarious! I am not one drawn to the Western genre, but McMurtry has got me hooked. Beautiful descriptions of prairies, snow, wilderness and the unique characters who lived in the wild west.

Nothing like a gift to derail a person from the pile(s) of books to be read! I'd forgotten how much fun McMurtry's books are. It's a quick read, too.
