The stories in Images of Africa take place, mostly, in Botswana and Zambia. They're about individual people, mostly, or small communities; the events taking place are often monumental to the people involved but may or may not have significant ripples beyond that.

Mitchison's writing is thoughtful—she draws on local myths and legends, giving the impression that she's less putting a new twist on things than retelling old stories that Westerners are unlikely to have heard.

Naomi Mitchison, author of over 70 books, died in 1999 at the age of 101. She was born in and lived in Scotland and traveled widely throughout the world. In the 1960s she was adopted as adviser and mother of the Bakgatla tribe in Botswana.
