Mother Nature has other plans, however, and a chance snowstorm brings together two unlikely hearts, one human and one beast, yet both yearning for comfort, companionship, and that most elusive gift of a

This book is about an old man who's wife past away. Every Christmas his wife would put an angel on the Christmas tree, but then she died and he didn't even get a tree. He just got really depressed after the death of his wife but that all changed soon. Not long away a wild mare was lost in the snow storm and was getting really tired and worried. Then the old man see's her and leads her into the barn. Then he falls asleep in the hay and when he wakes there's a black foal (a baby horse) at the mar...more

I volunteer once a week at my son's school, shelving and straightening books (usually) in the young readers area. I'm probably the world's worst volunteer, however, because I spend as much time reading titles that look interesting as I do shelving them. This book was one of those.

I won't spoil it for you, but this sweet, sweet story just made me cry. The wonderful unexpectedness of it -- even for someone like me -- took my breath away.

Love, love, love it.

I really need a moment. I just finished reading this compassionate story and I need a moment to recover. It unfolds like a small movie laying out the old man and his situation, the horse lost, the suspense of the storm and the potential danger for the horse...each page is a what happens next. The conclusion is completely satisfying. Just lovely.

What a beautiful story with a great message, that of hope. I had tears in my eyes at the end of this. My youngest son picked this book out at our public library for the horse on the cover, but this book was so much more.

I thought this was a sweet story about hope. A farmer alone at Christmas after his wife dies and a wild mare stuck in a winter snow storm. A simple act of kindness brings them together and a wonderful thing happens in the end.

A beautiful Christmas story of found companionship. Echoes of the original Christmas story add resonance and depth. Tender and compassionate, it exemplifies courage in finding new meaning and purpose in life.

This was really less than I expected. It started out looking like it would be a good, heartfelt, healing story. It was okay, but the ending kind of seemed to fall flat. I don't plan on making this a family tradition.

Touching story about a recent widower's first Christmas alone and a magical gift that makes him look forward to tomorrow. Reminds me of Allen Say's books.

Are ponies born in the winter? I thought they were always born in the spring. Other than this inaccuracy, the story was nice.
Linda
Tender and touching, a simple story about an elderly lonely widower who receives hope through his act of kindness.
Megan
Sad and happy story of hope on a winter's night. Maybe for somewhat older elementary kids.

A lovely book for Christmas. Just a heads up--the story does deal with death and how life continues to offer grace and newness in the midst of loss.
