Phantoms In The Snow by Kathleen Duble, is a very informational historical fiction novel that was centered around a fifteen-year-old Noah Garrett from Texas. Noah loses his parents in the beginning of the novel to small pox and is forced to move to a military base in Colorado where his uncle would look after him. Knowing that the country was in the midst of WWII, Noah thought he would be thrown right into the middle of battle and he was worried. Noah did not even believe in war! This was becaus...more
When fifteen-year-old Noah's pacifist parents die of the smallpox in Texas, he is sent to Camp Hale, Colorado to stay with his uncle James Shelley, who he has never met. James is part of a rough-and-tumble mountain skiing unit, and the commanding officer is less than pleased that Noah is there, so he and his uncle agree that he will train with the unit. Noah has never skied, and believes that war and fighting is bad, but he bonds with his uncle and the other men, and learns about what is going o...more

Thoughts on the Overall Book: I thought this book was a very nice, meaningful war story and perfect for the age it's geared toward. Of course the synopsis was a done deal for me when it promised a brotherhood story and I was not disappointed in that fact. It was a brotherhood story, a coming of age story, and a family story. Seriously, all my favorite things to see in a war novel. I was also intrigued because I had never heard of the "Phantoms", the skiing devision who fought in WWII. It kind of...more
I had no idea that the US Army trained a division of skiing soldiers known as Phantoms in the mountains surrounding Camp Hale, Colorado. The Tenth Mountain Division trained in brutal conditions to be able to tackle any mountain through skiing, rappelling and climbing, no matter the weather. When not training, they looked to enjoy wild adventure before being sent to the Italian Alps at the end of World War II.

I hate the cover of this book. So not appealing, and it looks completely superimposed.
That said, I loved the story. Historical fiction about WWII with a completely different angle then I've ever read before. This is about the Phantom soldiers that skied in the mountains, they were called Phantoms because they were so quick and camouflaged that no one saw them coming.

I tried to imagine myself as a 13 year old boy reading this book. I'm pretty sure if I was it would be a four or five star book. As an adult I had to give it three maybe two and half.
Noah is orphaned (small pox) in 1944 and is sent to live with his only living relative, his uncle. An uncle he didn't even know existed until Noah was on the train to meet him. Turns out Noah's uncle is part of a mostly unknown military outfit called the Phantoms. Phantoms are a skiing military unit in the mountain...more

Maine Student Book Award nominee, 2012-2013. It was fascinating to learn about this little known band of soldiers from World War II, the Tenth Mountain Division who fought on skis in the Alps. Noah was recently orphaned when both of his parents died of illness, and he is sent to live with his only remaining relative, an uncle who is training with the Tenth Mountain. Though he was raised as a pacifist, he stays and trains with his uncle because he really has nowhere else to go. He has to lie abou...more
Phantoms in the snow is based off of real men in the WW2. Since the War was in Europe. Mostly in Germany and surrounding country's there was a lot of mountains. So the united states army came up with these skiers that are able to get to the enemies base. By poor little Noah who is the main character who his parents were against fighting and war in general.

This book was not on my radar until I had 4 boys in a row come to my library begging me for it. Apparently their teacher was reading it to them. I think it says a lot about a book if kids actively seek out a book which is already being read to them. They are LOVING IT!! It is about a 15 year Noah, a boy who is orphaned (small pox) in 1944. He is sent to live with his uncle who is stationed at Camp Hale in Co. and is part of a winter warfare battalion called the Phantoms. Though a few scenes seem...more
I liked this one well enough. It wasn't spectacular, but good. My main complaint is that it was too short to live up to its potential. It moved very quickly, to the point of feeling rushed at times. This may have been to keep it action-packed to interest the reluctant guy reader, but I felt it did the story a disservice. I liked the development of the relationship between Noah and Daniel. The Noah-Uncle relationship could have been developed a bit more. I liked the uncle's gruff-exterior-soft-in...more
This book was a great read.
"I decided to start the year off strong this year, so I chose a book from one of my least favorite genres. I just saw this book sitting on the top of one of the shelves in the Media Center, so I decided to give it a shot. I really enjoyed it, and it was easier to journal for than any other book so far. It is about a boy named Noah, who's Mother and Father die of some sickness, leaving him to his only living relative, an uncle he has never met. He has to leave Texas and...more

During WWII there was a special force trained by Alpine skiers, the Tenth Mountain Force also known as the Phantoms. These men (and boys, really) trained in brutal conditions in Colorado and the Berkshires to prepare for a silent, snowy stealth operation in the mountainous regions north of Spain.
This is a compelling story of a young Texan pacifist who finds himself caught in the whirlwind of WWII and the multi dimensional drama of war.
This is a nicely told slice of history that has eluded the...more

I liked the idea of creating a life behind a person who could have fought in World War II. I usually don't think of the individual soldiers in the war during history, and it was great to learn about the soldiers who trained in the 10th Mountain Division in my home state of Colorado. I was surprised how the author finished the story off, and at times I thought it was a little predictable or old about Noah's indecisiveness. Overall, though, I liked the refreshing view on the soldiers that were par...more

When his parents suddenly die of smallpox, he finds himself in the temporary care of the local minister. After arrangements are made, Noah boards a train and heads for the mountains of Colorado.

I read this because my oldest son read it and told me it was one of the few books that made him cry. For that reason alone I had to read it.
The book follows real facts (some dates of changed) of the Ski Division that helped take back Italy in World War 2. It follows a fifteen year old who has lost his pacifist parents and is shipped to live with his completely unknown larger than life military uncle.

After hearing a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division talk at a small informal gathering in Vail, Colorado, I wanted to read a novel rather than nonfiction about the Army's ski troops. Fascinating, really a great nugget of history not many people know about. There are a couple more books, all nonfiction, about the men who made up the Mountain Division and helped push the Germans out of Italy just before the end of WWII.
A World War II story of a fifteen year old boy who becomes an orphan and then is thrust in the care of his uncle who is training for battle as a Tenth Mountain Division soldier in Colorado--on skis. Noah's pacifist upbringing is put to the test as he trains with these men. This lttle known homefront, WWII training ground is sure to be a different war adventure for any young reader.
A unique World War II story about little-known specialized unit. At the center of the story is 15-year-old Garrett, an orphan who goes to live with his uncle is an officer in this unit. Garrett's parents instilled in their son their pacifist principles. This obviously results in a conflict for Garrett, something I wish the author explored more deeply in this story.
Phantoms in the snow was an amazing book. It takes place in WW2. I liked how the author showed what life was like for an American teenager during WW2. It also shows how the main character is able to overcome huge obstacles such as joining a winter warfare group when he has never even seen snow and hates war. I would defiantly recommend this book.
This book has definite boy-appeal but it didn't really go beyond a surface-level of emotion. There were a few scenes that would have normally made me cry in another book but in this story, I left feeling very little. The premise is interesting but I wasn't especially fond of the style of writing and didn't love any of the characters.
It's 1944. The world is at war once again. The U.S needs everyone that they can get to join the war effort in Europe. But a boy like Noah doesn't has to worry about things like that, at least not yet. His parents raised him as a pacifist, but with them dead and gone, he has to live with his uncle who is stationed at at military base. He hasn't even seen snow before, and now he has to master it?
