Augustus and his Smile by Catherine Rayner is a picture book about a tiger called Augustus who has lost his smile, and feels sad. He decides to go and look for his smile. He looks in the bushes, the tallest trees, the highest mountains, the deepest oceans and in the desert but he still can't find his smile. It begins to rain and Augustus dances around. When he sees his reflection in a puddle on the ground, he sees his face and on his face is his smile. Augustus realises that his smile will alway...more

"Chatherine Rayner celebrates the beauty of the world and the simple happiness it brings us when we open our eyes to it".
I totally agree with this statement, this book makes you realise the beauty in life and the fact that we choose ourselves whether we are happy or not.

I believe this book is multi-layered, you can choose to take from it what you like.

I think it is here that I may encourage readers to read picture books more often. There is something satisfying in a picture book as well as a cl...more

This book has beautiful and touching illustrations. It is a simple story about a tiger in search of his lost smile. He goes across deserts, up the highest trees, swims to the bottom of the ocean. He finally finds his smile when he's looking in a puddle, and he sees himself. It is a cute book that I appreciate for it's simplicity and beautiful illustrations.

I love the illustrations! How cute is Augustus!? He looks so sweet and snuggly. The story of how he looks for his smile a fun one, albeit it wasn't told in any especially memorable way. However, the illustrations more than make up for that and I was so charmed by the end that the obvious "message" ending didn't even annoy me ;-)

Beautifully illustrated with a heartwarming story of a tiger in search of his smile. My son insisted on trying to read it (looking at us for nearly every other word which were unknown to him). I was very proud of his willingness to try though and even surprised me with some that he got on his own. Great book for probably 18mo up to... I don't know- I loved it!

Augustus the tiger has lost his smile. So he does a great big kitty stretch and goes searching for it. He looks in the trees and on the mountains and in the deserts. But he can't find it. It starts to rain and when he looks into a large puddle he finds his smile right under his nose!

Augustus, the tiger, is in search of his smile. He has amazing experiences but eventually finds his smile in the water. Beautiful artwork - dark inky look. A great read aloud and opportunity to discuss facial expressions with students.

Finding happiness in the everyday. I can't think of a lesson I would rather my boys learned. And when they can do so, with lyrical language that is a joy to read out loud and wonderfully nuanced illustrations, it's even better

WOW. The story is sweet and the artwork is PHENOMENAL.

Augustus is a tiger who has lost his smile, the story is simple, its him going around the world looking for his smile, he eventually finds it after playing in the rain (he looks in a rain puddle and realizes it will be there whenever he is happy like after the wonderful adventure he's just been on).

And the artwork... The words are dynamically placed on the page, Augustus is drawn in loose and wonderful water color, and the backgrounds are g...more

Great book, Augustus is searching everywhere for happiness when he realizes that it was reflected in a puddle, and it was right there all along! I like the illustrations, the square shapes are unique.

The language was a bit too flowery and not action-based enough for a picture book, in my opinion. The illustrations are gorgeous, though.

I love this! It has beautiful illustrations, changing text patterns, a lyrical story and a happy tiger. What more can you ask for?
Aramis

So sweet/smart/great and beautifully illustrated! :)

Amazing children's book!
Paula
Great illustrations and a book that can incorporate the movements the tiger makes which would make it a great book for story time.
After searching mountains, forests, oceans, and deserts to find his smile, Augustus the tiger finds it when he looks in a puddle, and realizes that "happiness is everywhere around him."

Not the first story we've read about a missing smile, but it's sweet and the illustrations are beautiful.

A perfect happiness book--if it was for PreK or even toddlers. Too young for the Book Time group. Still, very cute book. I loved the pictures and the format. And the message was clear and simple and great. It goes right along with Leo Tolstoy's "If you want to be happy, be." Something I always need to work at.

Catherine Rayner has easily become one of my favorite illustrators and children's writer. Two of her books, Harris Finds His Feet and Augustus and His Smile, feature animals discovering the world and their independence. I utterly adore these books and know you will too.
