I loved this book. I thought it was funny and very educational. It was very well written, truly catching each moment.
The author, Peter Allison, left Australia at 19 to backpack through Africa. What started as a one year vacation turned into 7 years of guiding safaris.
The book is written in chapters that each relate a different event that happened. Many of the events involved large beasts found on the African outback. There were some funny stories, as well as some serious stories. ...more

Peter Allison is passionate about African wildlife. His stories are funny and his writing style is warm. I absolutely loved this book. I don't tend to read non-fiction but I got sucked in by the title and once I read the back I was hooked!
Allison has his book set up in chapters relating to different experiences he had while guiding safaris, mostly in Botswana. I was somewhat familiar with the landscape after reading many #1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. To give you an idea of the stories, ...more

At first, I wasn't all that impressed by these safari stories. I'm used to fantastic, and they (being based in reality) were not. It wasn't long, however, until I adapted to the pace, style, and nature of Allison's narrations and began to really enjoy them. The anecdotes describe his more remarkable encounters with wildlife, experiences in exotic African locations, and memorable interactions with both tourists fellow staff members. Made me want to visit Botswana and see what all the fuss is abou...more

I don't usually read non-fiction books, but this one was on the library's readers choice. I decided to give it a try. I really liked this book. It was funny and I leared a little about the wildlife in Botswana Africa. GOing on a safari would be such an adventure.

A funny and interesting read about a young man's adventures as a safari guide in Botswana. Allison moves to Africa after a vacation there from his home in Australia. At 19 he moves half-way around the planet to learn about the wild animals he loves. In the meantime he meets up with odd tourists (Germans and bird nerds being the most difficult) and has a great time. His love for both the animals and Africa is evident. I enjoyed the book so much I read it in one afternoon.

A book picked up on whim that was very amusing. Lots of stories about an African safari guide and the various troubles he gets into. The author has a causal, familiar style that makes you feel like you are right there sitting around the campfire.

Peter Allison is like the friend you have that tells great stories but when they tell a story in which you were involved, youre like 'hey, thats not really what happened, youre exaggerating' but cant really hold it against them because theyre so entertaining. He's funny, and his love of african wildlife comes across aplenty in every story, so I really enjoyed this story. Probably should be required reading for all folks headed out on organized safari.

I enjoy reading books that vary in terms of content and style, and Don’t Run filled the slot of a “fun” book. The book is a series of stories from a safari guide from Australia, so of which I’m sure have been told many times (and maybe the truth has been a bit stretched). It’s really funny in places, and especially the guide-client interaction. I still want to go to Africa ... but will make sure I do some searching for a good guide!

This was a hilarious and insightful true account of a young Australian man who discovers his passion for wildlife in southern Africa. Anyone with a sense of adventure will appreciate the stories as each chapter stands almost on its own and is a very quick read. The chapters range from funny to tense and anywhere in between as he shares some of his embarrassing moments and also some of his most proud moments.

The first thing that caught my attention with this book was the cover. Then the title. After reading the back, I was hooked. I loved reading stories about real life - especially when they are set in another country.
I laughed the whole way through; such an amusing book. Peter Allison has such a witty writing style that really brought you into his stories - I didn't want it to end!

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Absolutely fasinating. He was a crazy man and a 19 year old guide. I could tell he loved what he was doing and was just crazy enough to do it. Easy to put down. Each chapter was a separate story. The story about how Botswana became the country it is today was quite interesting-put "no.1 ladies detective agency" into perspective.

This book centers on the author's adventures as a safari guide in Botswana. Allison's stories are fascinating and well rounded with equal measures of good, bad, sad and funny. His conversational tone and keen sense of humor was a pleasure to read. He writes with sensitivity toward the animals and human beings alike. This book was highly enjoyable from start to finish.

conservationists, animal lovers, memoir readers, Animal Planet junkies
Don't be fooled by the cheesy, poorly photoshopped cover. This is a quick, fun read and a fascinating insight into the world of a safari guide. Loved the conservationist message -- Allison loves these animals so much that I found myself rooting for them too. Although much of the writing is clumsy, Allison's humor had me smiling through much of the book.

This is a fun, easy read! It is a collection of experiences of a safari guide in Africa so it is easy to read a little bit at a time. Vivid descriptions of animals and their personalities, humorous sketches of the people he worked with and guided, and short tales of encounters between humans and animals in the wild. Rated PG for mild sexual innuendo.

Really funny short stories about guiding safaris through South Africa and then the Okavango Delta in Botswana. A very amusing writer and with lots of interesting tidbits about the animals in Africa..Elephants really are afraid of mice, Cheetahs are fast but not mean and being charged by a buffalo can be more terrifying than any other animal out there.

The individual stories in this book were sometimes just interesting, sometimes a little sad, and sometimes quite funny. My personal favorite was "Pets." There's just something hilarious about all these buff safari guide men sitting cross-legged to avoid a genital-attacking badger. Well, okay, maybe it's better in context.

This was a great read about a man's experiences as a Safari guide in Africa. Though I have never been to Africa, his experiences and explanations and FUNNY hilarious experiences as a guide, made me want to go. I especially loved the tales of the Salvador and elephants and the tourists who made his job more difficult.

This is a funny and really entertaining book, especially if you like animal stories/armchair travel. I will probably never find myself face to face with a lion (hopefully), but this author does and he describes these encounters with a lot of humor and a lot of genuine interest in the lives of animals.
