I wanted to really like this novel, because I felt like it did a lot of things very well. The story was intriguing, the characters had the potential to be very interesting, all of that good stuff. But for some reason, while I was entertained by the story, I didn't really develop any kind of emotional attachment to the characters. I never felt like I really knew them, and it felt kind of like all the characters were playing pieces that the author moved around at will. I'm curious if other people ...more

There are four major characters in this novel, all of whom knew each other in college. There's Sarah, who suffers from narcolepsy and often cannot discern the events she sees in her dreams from reality. There's Robert, who might be the one affected most by Sarah's disorder (but I can't tell you why without spoiling an awesome twist). There's Terry, film critic and insomniac who claims to not have slept in almost ten years. And Gregory, a world-renowned sleep therapist who believes that sleep is ...more

I really did enjoy this, although with a few reservations. It is very funny, and the plot is quite ingenious and very interesting. It is a bit over reliant on unlikely coincidence, and for some reason it niggles ; he's not quite good enough to get you to totally suspend your disbelief. Plus, the writer is obviously not a lesbian or a transsexual and doesn't write very convincing characters who are. That aside, this was really very funny with a couple of cracking set pieces. There's a wickedly sh...more

I don't know why other reviews bill this as a "romance" or "love story". Yes, there is romance and love, but those are just things that are involved in this story of sleep, control, dreams, fetishism and memory. It's a twisty tale that takes you from 1980s when our characters first meet at university to when they are reunited at the house they used to live at whilst at university, which is now a sleep disorder clinic. It's a very well written book; I found it completely di...more

I picked this book up at a used book sale thinking the concept of several friends with sleeping problems seemed like an interesting one. What I didn't count on were obsurd plot twists and obsessive thinking themes. I found this book so disturbing that by the last 3/4, I skipped ahead to the last few chapters, skimmed the part I didn't read and decided it wasn't worth my time to finish. Really, an obsessed man who gets a sex change so he can be with the woman he loves only to find out she is g...more

I heard this book reviewed on the radio several years before I read it and for some reason the title stayed with me, although I never found a copy. When I eventually did, I was scared to read it in case it wasn't as good as I was hoping.
How wrong. A beautifully crafted novel which kept me guessing right to the end. Enough mystery to keep me hanging, enough realism to sympathise and be interested in the characters. I delighted in the demise of at least one of the characters and the gloriousl...more

there was this big brother of a friend in high school, and he was a wise guy, and he used to say, "you only like things becuase they are good! I like some thing because they are BAD!" now this isn't a terrible book, and maybe that guy was inventing smartass irony, but i enjoyed this alot... really interesting to see an earlier book by this really good author when he was trying out genres, trying to get a hit... and the whole sleep thing is fun, and then it devolves into this frankenst...more

Ha. Bubu machen. Polster abhören. Heia machen. Top Thema. Da kann man gar nix falsch mac...more

Brilliant, gripping, completely twisted, mind-f**k of a book. The characters are bizarrely and intricately interconnected. There are a few of the same themes here as in The Rotter's Club and The Closed Circle, but no need for a background in British Labour history. Also, ironically enough, it took me ages to fall aleep after finishing this book - I couldn't stop thinking about it. Coe is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

I think I picked this one up randomly but I totally sucked in, super-suspenseful...
I really liked the structure, the broken sentences with the first half ending a chapter set in the past and the second half beginning a chapter set in the present...
The ending I thought was a bit melodramatic and disappointing, but I loved the rest of the read. It's worth it.

Chapters alternate between two periods a decade apart: student days (with various sleep and relationship problems) and years later as they meet up, centred on a sleep research establishment that is in the house they once shared as students.
What at first appears to be a straightforward tale of students growing up turns out to be much more sinister.

this is one of my most favoritest novels ever. coe is one of those uber-clever writers who can tell a complex tale of seemingly unrelated stories in a way that's funny, articulate, and compelling. the story has to do with sleep disorders, but that's all i'm gonna say about that; read it yourself to get an addictive taste of his brilliant writing and humor.

don't want to give anything away, so instead I'll just compare this to Seven Types of Ambiguity, in form and substance. Sleep disorders, love, friendship, gender, dreams, movies, passion, madness, memory, tragedy. And just turn directly to page 271 if you want to laugh out loud.

If you consider sleep a waste of time, you probably are one of the potential "patients" of this book. It's a novel of sufference, of unshared love, of unfullfilled dreams..A world of sleep, from where you can't escape, of tiredness, sickness and - above all - of a huge sadness!

I fell in love with this book. It's so rich - all these characters somehow related by a period of time, and the book traces all those meetings in the past, and also their lives from then, in alternate chapters, until it all collides; twisty and compelling and just absolutely great.

people who like crappy books.
DO NOT READ this book! It is awful and a total waste of time. I will even ruin the ending so you won't read it: The female doctor is actually the love interest of the main character, who had a sex change because he thought his girlfriend was a lesbian and wanted a movie. LAME!

a wonderful surprise. Suggested by a friend and just LOVED it. Some of the most beautiful writing i had experienced in a long time. I thought, "my god, i would LOVE to be able to visualize this and make a film, but i don't think it would be possible.
