Poi l'adolesce...more

Italian "post-war" writer except that the earliest essays here date from during WWII when she and her husband, both Italian Jews, were in internal exile (he was subsequently killed by the Nazis for his anti-fascist activism).
Ginzburg is famous for the elegant simplicity of her style (which makes reading her in Italian manageable as well) and her cool chronicling of the domestic and internal aspects of her life, despite having been caught up in some of the most tumultuous public events of her er...more

Che parole do...more

Thoughtful. Simple. Easy like a good rose wine.
She writes for a specific time & people, so there were perceptions that were not powerful to me but may have been to her audience (presumably post-WWII Italy).
A few of my favorite excerpts:
"...in that secret moment of ours, in our moment of perfect equilibrium, we have realized that there is no real authority or servitude on the earth. And so it is that now as we turn to that secret moment we look at others to see whether they have lived throw...more

This collection of essays has been amazing to me.
I will probably look back to this as something adorable in time to come.
Great content here and there, good flow, amusing examples and references.

Worth reading if only for the two essays "Human Relationships" and "The Little Virtues."

"As far as the education of children is concerned I think they should be taught not the little virtues but the great ones. Not thrift but generosity and an indifference to money; not caution but courage and a contempt for danger; nor shrewdness but frankness and a love of truth; not tact but love for one's neighbor and self-denial; not a desire for a success but a desire to be and to know,".

'Lui ed io' is my favorite short story in this modest, sincere and very feminine collection of personal stories and essays. I am not sure how it sounds in English translation, but there is a certain pleasant rhythm to Natalia Ginzburg's prose in Italian. I like the way she writes about her relationship with her husband and of her relationship to the craft (she calls it ''mestiere'') of writing.

I annotated this book of essays. It was a tough read for me. Some essays were really good and made me think. Some seemed like rants, particularly one agains the British, their crappy food, their lack of imagination, etc. She's written many books and has a strong reputation, so I'm not sure what it means. She also writes novels, so maybe those are good, but I'm not very motivated to read more.

believe it's a masterpeice by her like feeling calm and pensive by the time I read! <3 Specially the part about cesare pavese! ^_^

Ginsburg's writings on human nature have a rare facility; this collection in particular no parent should miss.

Commento completo e blaterante: http://lepaginestrappate.wordpress.co...

Molto bello.

i love this. so romantic and strong. my teacher who got us to read it had the best literary taste. i could read 'liu ed io' every day and be so happy. i always think about it as being the best depection of a relationship i've ever read.

I love this book, especially the story-like essays "He and I" and "Worn-out Shoes." The writing is delicate, witty, understated, and full of heart, particularly the essays about the devastation of World War II.

I am in love with Natalia Ginzberg (though I love Henry Fielding a smidgen-just a smidgen more). I cary this book with me every where. Some of the best personal essays I have ever read.

I've read this book several times, it has an extraordinary effect on me. Maybe because of its simplicity. Or maybe because it is real, and the writer put her life in it.

Relatos breves, que van susurrando una verdad. El estilo del narrador es muy versátil. Detalle por las cosas pequeñas. Hermoso relato de los zapatos rotos.

I would highly recommend the last two essays in this book (Human Relations and Little Virtues). The others just aren't of the same caliber.

two stories deserve more.
not good at all.after reading this book I thought my stories would be better.this book just encouraged me to write...

Ginzburg's essays are taut and personal. The one titled "My Vocation" is a must-read for any aspiring or established writer.
Colleen
So far, I've learned not to take any moment of life for granted. (That's from the first essay, about seasons in Abruzzi.)

“When I write something I usually think it is very important and that I am a very fine writer. I think this happens to everyone. But there is one corner of my mind in which I know very well what I am, which is a small, a very small writer. I swear I know it. But that doesn't matter much to me. Only, I don't want to think about names: I can see that if I am asked 'a small writer like who?' it would sadden me to think of the names of other small writers. I prefer to think that no one has ever been like me, however small, however much a mosquito or a flea of a writer I may be. The important thing is to be convinced that this really is your vocation, your profession, something you will do all your life.” 1 likes
