I am currently enjoying This Rock written by Robert Morgan, the author of Gap Creek which I really loved. The author does a good job of painting pictures with words. It is the story of two brothers (Muir and Moody) living with their mom and sister during the 1920's in rural Appalachia--North Carolina to be exact. Muir, the younger brother, is a shy, introspective dreamer while his brother Moody, (good name for him) is angry much of the time and given to gambling and moonshine whiskey. Moody's ang...more

I chose this book after reading "Gap Creek" and "Oprah bookclub" book by the same author. "This Rock" is very similar in setting (rural North Carolina in the early 1900s) and tone; although this time the story is about a mother and her two sons as told by the mother and one of the sons. There are alot of religious overtones (and undertones). This one might be good for a bookclub discussion with men as the majority of the story focuses on the sons and how they gro...more

I struggled along with the main character, Muir, as I read this book. I wanted him to "get a break" in life and everything just kept piling up against him. It seemed like it took too long for the story to get to the turning point and for Muir to finally figure out his calling in life. Once he did, I loved section where he is working on the church with Hank and I wish there were more moments like this where Muir was able to connect with someone.

This is a gripping coming of age tale and spiritual journey. Gentle and shy, Muir Powell experiences the trials, triumphs and failures of growing up in the Appalachians during the 1920s. As painful as it is to read at times, the descriptive narratives in this story are breathtaking. It was a delight to read and after I finished the book, the experience of reading it lingered with me for a long while.

"This book is like reading Gap Creek again. The images, the struggles, the setting, the people, the phrases all seem too familiar. The ending becomes quite predictable and contrived…even corny. It’s a good book in its own right, but nothing is gained by reading more than one of Morgan’s books."

This is a wonderful telling of Esau and Jacob as told in the 1920's of America. The sotry of two brothers, as different as night and day, fighting with each other. Then, through their struggles, learning to accept and love each other. A wonderful novel on the meaning of forgiveness and brotherly love.

His descriptive writing continues in this book. I could identify with Muir's angst and struggle for purpose.

Hie preacher-type characters seem to wax very verbose in his tales...I'm sure his intention is as much towards the reader as the story.

I need to comeback to this book another time. It's rather slow and I could not really get in to it. I don't think it's bad, but I am definately not feeling drawn into the story of two brothers Cain and Able style.

I enjoyed this book, the story is about simple people and their lives, but their feelings are not simple, and their lives are not easy.

This is an enjoyable book that my friend Melinda Parker recommended. It takes you into a world of faith and into a world of real struggle.
