“Pimp” is fantastic. For about a decade now this has been one of my favorite books, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Granted, I should immediately admit that I probably like this book for all the wrong reasons; I’m sure that the ‘correct’ grounds for appreciating “Pimp” (if such standards have been established) are to ponder the struggles of the black man fighting to rise up in American society and to look at the infelicitous lot he’s been subjected to and to care...more

Entertaining to the core, but that doesn't mean Iceberg brushes over the nuance and complexity surrounding his situation. "The Skull Book on Pimping" concisely covers issues that sociologists have prattled about in dense and meaningless jargon for decades. Slim is among the few honest autobiographers in his embrace of his contradictions. The book is neither self-glorifying nor moralizing. Nor is it, and it does not pretend to be, simply the facts. Like the hip-hop music it would influe...more

When I first bought this book I just assumed that it took place in the '60s and '70s but it actually takes place in the '20s,'30s, and 40's and yeah, it's amazing. Told in a very straight forward matter of fact style, cold and hard and filled with old school street slang. Just like you'd expect from a guy named Iceberg Slim.

I wrote an essay on Iceberg Slim that was published in a porn (!) magazine some years ago:

But you can read it here on my blog:

Indeed, pimpin' ain't easy.

Written as a cautionary tale, but treated by many as a bible, this book entertained me on a plane trip to San Francisco a few years ago. Landing at my destination was almost a disappointment. Iceberg Slim was the inspiration for Ice T's name and persona. This book talks about how the author became a pimp, and how he prospered in the game for so long. It describes in detail all the rules and codes of pimping which I believe are probably complete bullshit.Pimps are o...more

I actually found a used copy of this book at a book sale outside a wat in bangkok. I was heading to the islands later that day and needed a new book so i bought it.

I read it in one night and the next morning. He's a smart, abrasive, unpolished guy who's used to the world being ugly. If you read it knowing that this guy is not a great writer, he's just giving us a view into someplace foreign to us, then it's an enjoyable read. If you're expecting genius or great writing, you'lle be disappoint...more

I had never heard of this book until I went to see Dave Chappelle at The Punchline in San Francisco. Dave talked about this book in the context of his break from the Comedy Central network and subsequent journey to South Africa. I'm not sure I understood the connection entirely, but I'm glad I was curious enough to read this book. Iceberg offers an uncompromising look at how a person gets involved in the pimp lifestyle and learns to exert control over other human beings. In the vein of Malcolm X...more

I was watching a Dave Chapalle comedy show on YouTube when in one of the shows he mentions this book called "Pimp". I was extremely curious and read the book from the library. I think Iceberg was a role model to lots of rappers. This book is an insight to a totally different world we probably will never see or hear about.

I did learn lots new words like 'scratch' means cash on the street. Even though he has reference for all the different words he used, still you have to read and r...more

I am reading this book on a recommendation from a friend, and I'm really enjoying it. It is not a book for the weak of heart, this book gets pretty graphic at times. This book offers insight into the struggles of rough urban living, and the shoots and ladders of street life. It has a strong message to young Hustlers and Pimps to get wise, get an education, and rise up from oppression and hatred.

Iceberg doesn't know how to write, and it's pretty clear that no editor ever looked at this. And he never explains how he built his stable of "ho's," but you can't beat such an honest look into the pimp world. This is the book that Ice-T read and said "That's what I want to do with my life."

By Iceberg Slim's own admission, a look back on the golden age of pimping before drugs screwed everything up. Slim gives a lot of ladies "circus love" and lets on that the best way to break a woman's spirit is by whipping her with a straightened wire coat hanger. Thanks, Iceberg!

This is one of those books upper-middle class white kids read to increase their cool factor or somehow show they are in-touch with the street. That is exactly why I read it. But I was young and I have since re-read it and must say its a rippin' good yarn.

This was a serious street-up memoir. It was REAL real. I learned a thing or two maybe I didn't want to know, but I certainly learned it authentically. The writing style is straight-up, no holds barred, and not for the weak of heart or stomach...

One of those books you just can't put down. Slim is such a naturally gifted writer that it's almost hard to believe it. While it's probably hyperbolic as all hell, it'll entertain you every which way nonetheless. Pimp hard, young blood. Pimp hard.

What can I say? This is a masterpiece of self loathing, confessions of deeds and redemption. I loved it. Robert Beck is a genius in his writing style. No other urban noir writer has what he has--experience and raw talent in story telling

Don't ask, I noticed it on the bookshelf of a friend years ago.I opened it up to see several pages highlighted and started to read it. There's something to be learned from everything, including this book.

iceberg slim gives his memior in this book. he does not sugarcote or glamorize anything. he just recounts his memories living in chicago in the 1950's working the only way he knows: as a pimp.

Brutal account of Slim's rise through the streets of 1930's America. Hard to read at times (do to it's violence towards women... and men), but always fascinating.
