A really excellent overview of the history of magic and the occult in the west, with a focus on the ways that magic and science have been much more closely related in the past than they are considered to be at present. The authors see the occult as having as much of a role in shaping Western civilization as Greek rationalism or Judeo-Christian beliefs. It's fascinating and highly readable.
