(I read this a while back, so I'll keep it brief.) It's a shame Brown died, because I felt this to be his best book, and one that screamed for a sequel. Given that Fay itself was a sequel of sorts, I think this was a very real possibility. Fay Jones comes from about as far down the social ladder as it can get (I hate the term "white trash," so I'll just leave it at that), so when her "family" falls apart, she departs on her own, in way that definitely reminds you of Le...more

A friend of mine, knowing that I was a Larry Brown fan, gave me an autographed copy of Fay when it was first published. The first time I read it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it two and half days later. This was the South I had grown up in, and maybe didn't want to talk about, but knew wasn't very far away, and closer than I was willing to admit. Fay's journey through the trailers and strip bars and the various characters she interacts with makes this book eerily real. Bro...more

Fay leaves home at seventeen, searching for more from life than a migrant worker existence. She crosses paths with a cast of dysfunctional characters, some of whom grow to care deeply for Fay, some who trick her into thinking that they care, and some who are just plain scary. Fay manages to keep her wits about her and keep the sympathies of the reader even as the bodies start piling up behind her.

I love coming of ages stories like this one, where the protagonist comes of age under the most ...more

This is one of my favorite books, written by a great Mississippi writer. Brown tells this story of Fay, a poor white teenager alone in the world without support, with compassion and without judgment. The characters of Sam, the highway patrolman, and Aaron, the strip-joint bouncer, are wonderfully portrayed. The story is quite violent, but ends with some hope for Fay. It was refreshing for me to read a grittier depiction of the poor, backwoods South, not just the "moonlight and magnolias&quo...more

recommends it for: people who like books about the difficult, harsh lives of the Southern poor
Fay follows the story of one of the characters from another of Brown's books, Joe. If you like gritty books about the tough, hard-scrabble lives of poor people doing their best to get by, you should like this book. If you like books where everything is nicely tied up in the end and people's lives work out and we learn that if you are good and try hard eventually you'll get some good luck...well, you probably shouldn't read any of Larry Brown's books.

I used to live in Oxford, Mississippi. So did Larry Brown.
He was a drunk. Spent his days and nights on the same barstool at Proud Larry's Pub.
Why is it so many wonderful writers are alcaholics?
Larry couldn't hardly hold a decent conversation, but he sure could write.
I heard that he died a couple of years ago...heart attack.
Another Oxford writer, William Faulkner, also died of a heart attack.

Very well written.... and very depressing. I kept expecting the main character to have SOMETHING good in her life... but, no. However, it was written so well that I still enjoyed reading it, and went through it pretty quick because I didn't want to stop reading. I would have given it 5 stars if I wasn't so darn depressed by it. I guess I like happier endings.

I read Joe first and loved that, but this one is tops. It's freaking long and I avoid long books like the plague because life is short, but I looked forward to it every day until it was done. Not for those who don't like their books with grinding poverty, rock bottom desperation, drunk driving, etc.

Underage sex, plenty of killing, close calls and seemingly hopeless cases: exactly what Larry Brown is good at. He's dead, but I still secretly wish I could find him at Proud Larry's in Jackson and get drunk on PBR with him while talking about James Agee and Eudora Welty.

Incredible book. This is a sequel to Joe and I agree with Greg that it's better. She gets taken in by that couple and unfortunately makes a choice that wasn't necessary but she didn't know that, which alters her future tragically.

I'll admit what strikes me most about this book is the sad cluelessness and desperate abandonment of our main character, Fay. It reads like a tragic thriller I was so not able to put it down.

Loved the style of writing-felt like I was watching a movie. Grabbed it off the library shelf in a hurry and didnt realize there was a prequel. Cant wait to read the first one.

I love Larry Brown, but this seemed excessively plot-driven and with some characters (female, especially) that were a bit two-dimensional. As usual with him, made me want to drink.

I really enjoyed this novel. Throughout the book though I really disliked the character, however that it one of the things that kept me reading. I was hoping for her demise.

there is a moment when fay is on the side of the road. it's hot outside, she's hungover, dirty, miserable...this is the essence of larry brown. true southern grit--i love it!

Before "Fay" I was a Larry Brown virgin, and now I can't get enough of his roughness. This is a brillant book. A little slowly-paced, but worth the read.

Larry Brown has done Harry Crews proud! An excellent work, filled with both love and adventure, written in a blazingly beautiful style.

This book started out with a hopeful feeling and just grew darker and darker as it went on. Very stressful to read!
