Divided Allegiance follows Paksenarrion through a series of adventures in which she learns a series of lessons. A lot more happens in this book than in Sheepfarmer's Daughter - Paks leaves the Duke's command, and sets off to find somewhere she's happier, ending up training with Girdsmen to be a paladin. But afer an ambush, evil takes hold of her, and we end the book wondering if she'll ever be the same (although given that there's a third book, our hopes are fairly high). Like the first book, this ends abruptly - you'll need to have the third one handy.

A much better book than the first in the series, Divided Allegiance brings Paks into the full range of her hero status with a series of happenings that seem somewhat unfortunate. She wins, then loses on a number of occasions during the book, and by the fairly heartwrenching end, you are definitely ready to find out more.
