This study, despite its title, centres upon the skinheads of Vorkuta, an isolated city in the north west region of Russia, 1400+ miles from Moscow. Originally part of the gulag system, prisoners were used in the mines here, though Vorkuta is now rapidly becoming de-industrialised. The climate is very harsh. Even the hard skins find it so and its overbearing skies oppressive.
