Bridget Jones's Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (Bridget Jones #1-2)
In the course of the year recorded in Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget confides her hopes, her dreams, and her monstrously fluctuating poundage, not to mention her consumption of 5277 cigarettes and "Fat units 3457 (approx.) (hideous in every way)." In 365 days, she gains 74 pounds. On the other hand, she loses 72! There is also the unspoken New Year's resolution--the quest...more

I spent more than 4 days reading this 2-Books-In-1 of Helen Fielding: Bridget Jones's Diary and The Edge of Reason. The first book is the Filipino Group's Book of the Month Choice for February 2010 with the theme Romantic Comedy. I voted for Unrequited Love for the theme because I thought I would nominate Wuthering Heights so that I would have a compelling reason to read it. But it lost to rom-com so I had to think of a good novel for that. I thought of nominating The Graduate or Breakfast at Ti...more

I absolutely loved BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY. Helen Fielding did an amazing job!
Many women can relate to Bridget, I know I can! She is a very laughable character, there is literally no filtering system between her brain and her mouth which is why she always says things without thinking and the humour comes from her trying to dig her way out of those embarrassing times! Bridget struggles to find the perfect man and resigns herself to becoming a spinster, which is hilarious because she isn't even tha...more

I actually think I've only listened to the audio versions of these books, not sat and read them. It doesn't change my opinion of them. In fact, these are wonderful stories to listen to while cleaning or doing other monotonous, mindless tasks.
These books are presented as diary entries from London inhabitant Bridget Jones, who writes about her love life, work, weight loss and her occasional attempts to quit smoking. What's so much fun is the parallels between these stories and Jane Austin's classi...more

Not as good as the first book. This one lurches around, going apparently no-where through the whole middle section. Bridget's choices about her love life are infuriatingly stupid, and it's hard to have much sympathy when she screws thing up with Mark. The movie version, as poor as that was, contained nearly nothing from the book, but actually had a far more credible story arc.

Bridget Jones diary is a novel based on the fictive character Bridget Jones; a slightly superficial yet humorous thirty somthing women, searching for mister right, dealing with family (especially her somwhat hyserical and bizare mother), while trying handle her job.
The story of Bridget is light and funny, but in the end just can't stay on its tracks. I found myself quickly irritated by Bridgets desperate and slightly pathetic need of a man (what happened to being a little independent). Of course...more

A funny bit of fluffy chick lit. The Edge of Reason had laugh out loud parts, but it was an entirely exaggerated & unrealistic story, whereas BJD is funny because it is so believable & (unfortunately for me) easily relatable. Even though I have only seen the first movie, I can safely say I like these books a million times more... Could have something to do with not having a squinty pouting leading lady in front of my face. Gotta love a heroic Darcy rushing around to save the day too - wh...more
Well, I laughed my butt off reading this book. It's hysterical! Is it as good as the first book? Probably not, but it doesn't mean this one is any less entertaining. I've read where some people feel Bridget's escapades or situations are not realistic...but, isn't that the point? It's a book written to entertain. I didn't care if it was a little exaggerated here and there--for me, that falls under the definition of 'fun.'

This is really a "three and half star" book. I couldn't really give it 4 stars because it is really just a silly book. BUT I enjoyed it anyway. Of course, I'm glad that my kids aren't as directionless and undisciplined and unmotivated as the 30 year olds in this book, but since they are fictional characters it was easy to find them amusing. one of my favorite parts was that the author actually mentions Colin Firth in his role as "Mr Darcy" in "Pride and Prejudice". Colin Firth of course is actua...more

Not having read the first book, but watched the film, I picked up this book to read on an 18 hr flight. I found myself embarrassingly forgetting myself and laughing out loud throughout the book on the flight. I really enjoyed it and couldn't wait to get my hands on the first book.
Oddly enough, on that same trip, while backpacking on the other side of the world, I found an abandoned copy of the first book in a hostel. What a coincidence, no?

I think I identified with Bridget Jones more than I would care to admit. The humor with which this book is written is timeless! Bridget's constant tracking of her weight fluctuation, her promises to herself to improve her lifestyle, and her humorous depictions of everyday life had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Worth a read, but WARNING: Not for younger readers. The movie is rated R for a reason, and the book is too. Certain "scenes" and language definitely make this not for yo...more
omg- i loved these two books so much! I want to see more Bridget please!! laughed so much- didnt cry from emotions as much as cried from embarrassment for Bridget.. love the character of Darcy being played by Colin Firth in the movies after the Firth incident in the book!! pure casting genius! Appreciate the movies so much more now- had always loved them but seriously Fielding needs to write another BJ novel:)
I read the first novel when the movie came out and needed a reminder of Bridget's fantastic spirit and honesty. Re-reading it, I realized how very different it is from the movie and how great the story is in the novel. We all need to be a little more like Bridget--not in her lying to herself or counting every vice ways, but in her desire for love and willingness to have a good time. Now to read the sequel.:)
I loved the 2nd book even better than first. I was laughing so hard within the first few chapters I started having an asthma attack. I was so disappointed the movie wasn't nearly as good, but this book is hysterical. I love Bridget Jones. Most of the time I feel like I am her--saying the wrong things, making a fool of myself, but always well intentioned and searching for love. Absolutely loved this book!
The Bridget Jones' Diary series was fun, but you basically forgot what happened 20 seconds after reading it. Although it was predictable and cheesy (predictable because of a certain Jane Austen novel) it's something to pass the time, fun in the sense that you don't need to dwell on anything because it's been there, done that - way better than most chick-lit books though.
I am a HUGE fan of the movie. Finally decided to sit down and read the book. Typical of Book to movie, there are quite a few differences. With that being said, I LOVED the book. It was funny light hearted and Bridget is just a trip!! I can relate to her on so many levels being over 30 (cough!) and never married. I highly recommend this book. It will have you laughing out loud and inspiring you to keep your own diary...okay.....maybe not a diary (would hate to see my alcohol units consumed lol)....more
I re-read these books to get some ideas about diary-style novels. They are full of sharply observed satire on the lives of single, thirty something women on the 1990s. While of course, the heroine ends up with the dashing hero, the ridiculous expectations and double standards of relationships are thoroughly explored. Classics of so-called 'chick-lit'.
Here I thought I was in for a good read to start the new year/ I was greatly disappointed and found Bridget to be quite annoying this time and her adventures were quite unbelievable. I did not have a connection with the characters because I found the author was trying to top the success of her first book by making everything more outrageous.
Just re-read both Bridget Jones books. Not as good as I remember. Don't know whether that's because the books have dated or I have grown older and past the point in my life where Bridget's life is in any way comparable to mine. Given that I've just read The Fault in our Stars, which is teenage fiction, I suspect it's the former. Disappointed.
I confess...I enjoy Chick-lit! Especially on a sunny day on the beach or by the pool! I loved this book even more than the adorable movie (which I've seen like 6 times!) I read "The Edge of Reason" and it was cute...but this book was better. Bridget Jones is such likeable character with her many flaws and I love reading the book as a diary.
I think what was so great about this book is that every woman found a little piece of herself in Bridget. Unfortunately, I found a little too much in common with her. Upon every twist and turn of my life, I find myself embarrassing myself. It was nice to read about someone else being embarrassed for a change.
A sequel that is funnier than the first! Hurrah!
Made into a great movie! Clever devices, the book has references to the actor Colin Firth, who portrayed Mr. Darcy in the movie Pride and Prejudice, which inspires some of this plot. He also stars in this novel and movie as Mark Darcy, Bridget's love interest.

Of course I had to read the sequal to Bridget Jone's diary. This one did not disappoint! An even funnier encounter is had between Daniel Cleaver and Mr. Darcy. The movie was funny, but had an almost completely different plot, which is okay because it's almost like getting another story out of the series!

This was a poor attempt at being a sequel to the über hilarious first book. It still had it's cute, funny moments.. But the book was dominated by a very whiny, self-destructive bridget... So, it gets a little irritating... :-/
