I spent more than 4 days reading this 2-Books-In-1 of Helen Fielding: Bridget Jones's Diary and The Edge of Reason. The first book is the Filipino Group's Book of the Month Choice for February 2010 with the theme Romantic Comedy. I voted for Unrequited Love for the theme because I thought I would nominate Wuthering Heights so that I would have a compelling reason to read it. But it lost to rom-com so I had to think of a good novel for that. I thought of nominating The Graduate or Breakfast at Ti

I actually think I've only listened to the audio versions of these books, not sat and read them. It doesn't change my opinion of them. In fact, these are wonderful stories to listen to while cleaning or doing other monotonous, mindless tasks.
These books are presented as diary entries from London inhabitant Bridget Jones, who writes about her love life, work, weight loss and her occasional attempts to quit smoking. What's so much fun is the parallels between these stories and Jane More...

Bridget Jones diary is a novel based on the fictive character Bridget Jones; a slightly superficial yet humorous thirty somthing women, searching for mister right, dealing with family (especially her somwhat hyserical and bizare mother), while trying handle her job.
The story of Bridget is light and funny, but in the end just can't stay on its tracks. I found myself quickly irritated by Bridgets desperate and slightly pathetic need of a man (what happened to being a little independent More...

I think I identified with Bridget Jones more than I would care to admit. The humor with which this book is written is timeless! Bridget's constant tracking of her weight fluctuation, her promises to herself to improve her lifestyle, and her humorous depictions of everyday life had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Worth a read, but WARNING: Not for younger readers. The movie is rated R for a reason, and the book is too. Certain "scenes" and language definitely make this

omg- i loved these two books so much! I want to see more Bridget please!! laughed so much- didnt cry from emotions as much as cried from embarrassment for Bridget.. love the character of Darcy being played by Colin Firth in the movies after the Firth incident in the book!! pure casting genius! Appreciate the movies so much more now- had always loved them but seriously Fielding needs to write another BJ novel:)

I read the first novel when the movie came out and needed a reminder of Bridget's fantastic spirit and honesty. Re-reading it, I realized how very different it is from the movie and how great the story is in the novel. We all need to be a little more like Bridget--not in her lying to herself or counting every vice ways, but in her desire for love and willingness to have a good time. Now to read the sequel.:)

Here I thought I was in for a good read to start the new year/ I was greatly disappointed and found Bridget to be quite annoying this time and her adventures were quite unbelievable. I did not have a connection with the characters because I found the author was trying to top the success of her first book by making everything more outrageous.

I think what was so great about this book is that every woman found a little piece of herself in Bridget. Unfortunately, I found a little too much in common with her. Upon every twist and turn of my life, I find myself embarrassing myself. It was nice to read about someone else being embarrassed for a change.

A sequel that is funnier than the first! Hurrah!
Made into a great movie! Clever devices, the book has references to the actor Colin Firth, who portrayed Mr. Darcy in the movie Pride and Prejudice, which inspires some of this plot. He also stars in this novel and movie as Mark Darcy, Bridget's love interest.

I don't have the boxed set w/_BJ: the Edge of Reason_. I only have the mass-market paperback _BJ's Diary_...enjoy reading it when I need to read something completely for recreation, when I can turn off my mind...and also need/ to have a mental picture of Colin Firth for a considerable amount of time ;-P

Of course I had to read the sequal to Bridget Jone's diary. This one did not disappoint! An even funnier encounter is had between Daniel Cleaver and Mr. Darcy. The movie was funny, but had an almost completely different plot, which is okay because it's almost like getting another story out of the series!

I find that a sequel is rarely ever good. It's often difficult for the writer to maintain the same momentum as they did with the first book. This seemed to be the case with this sequel. It still made for a good read; and it had some really funny bits in it, but it doesn't compare to the original.

This is what happens when I plan my trip reading poorly and end up at the mercy of the Carrefour in the Doha mall for plane reading. Probably would not have chosen to reread this otherwise but it was light and fun. The original is better than the sequel - I mean, seriously, arrested in Thailand?

I like the english humour. The story flowed nicely. I like reading a book that is realistic and simple wording, not with complicating descriptive words that take away from the realism. Well developed characters the reader could relate to, especially Briget Jones.

I just listened to this on tape. The accent made me laugh hysterically while I was driving. I thought I couldn't laugh anymore until the very end. The best was Bridget's mom harshly saying, "Hello darrrrrlingh!"

Loved these - have read them so many times and always laugh out loud. Not so much a fan of the films. Love all the daft scrapes she gets into. Love that she gets her Mr Darcy. Love the cheesyness of it!

This book was fantastic. I would recommend this as a hilarious look at single life. I would give the movie a miss it was awful.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Pride & Prejudice knockoffs. This one is a fun update, and the second book Edge of Reason is far superior to the movie version and is a great Persuasion knockoff.

see comments regarding The Bridget Jones Diary. Actually this one was probably funnier than the Diary. Fielding will be forever credited with introducing 'fuckity fuck' to the English vocab.

v. good, i read these before renee zellweger brought the character to life. i think i prefer the film versions, though helen fielding did give the actors some incredible material to work with.

bridget jones's diary made me laugh out loud--literally :)
the edge of reason was a bit too out unbelievable & ridic. also reminded me of a comedic version of the movie brokedown palace.

This is one of those books that makes the summer beach reading list. Easy read and main character is charmingly flawed.

Funny, irrevrant, crass, potty-mouth language, but I love it! Maybe because I SO remember acting and obsessing like B when I was a single-ton myself. The book on tape is read *perfectly*, far better than the print version. People in the cars next to you will wonder why you're laughing.

I read both series (Bridget Jones's Diary in 1999 and The Edge of Reason in 2000) and couldn't stop laughing although I really couldn't identify with the main character's hilarious struggle to lose weight (I want to gain some weights, mind you :D). I think this is one of those novels which earn the first 'chicklit' term. These novels really made my day!
However, when I saw the movie based on the first novel a few years later, I was a bit disappointed. They changed the ending!!! Oh, w More...

This book cracked me up. If you've seen the movie you'll be happy to see the movie follows the book pretty closely. It does have some language so beware of that (just one certain word she loves to use :) Enjoyable and easy read - the British have a good sense of humor. This basically is a diary for a year in her life. She's obsessed with her weight, the calories and alcohol she consumes on a daily basis, as well as the # of cigarettes she smokes, lottery tickets she buys, etc. I love her an
