If you read one book this year, let it be this one! As someone who has lived with a chronic illness for over 20+ years, and have had my own visit to heaven, this book spoke to me in a powerful and impacting way. Black says, “I didn’t have strength for the whole journey, just enough for the next step.”

That one statement summed up what I have learned after walking out my journey with a chronic illness all these years.

Black open’s his testimony in the middle of a major plane crisis in which the...more

Dale Black was 19 and probably pretty arrogant when he got his pilot's license. He'd just been kicked out of college and didn't really care. He hopped into an airplane with two other pilots who had more experience and was ushered to the back seat, mere inches from the pilots. Minutes later, the acting pilot took off without gaining proper air speed. The airplane began losing altitude and, ironically, smashed into a memorial structure built to honor pilots who had previously died called "Portal o...more

I was given an advance copy of Flight to Heaven by a friend, having read no less than fifty books about life after death, heaven and NDE (near death experiences). Without doubt Flight to Heaven by Capt. Dale Black is the most comprehensive description of heaven I’ve ever read. The book kept me on the edge of my seat from cover to cover but the concepts regarding heaven were a little deep for me at first. The story was very credible, even to my critical mind, but as such, I was not able to fully...more

Capt. Dale Black shares a compelling story of living through a non-survivable plane crash and surrendering to the power of miracles. The greatest miracle is his transformation from a rebellious teenager to a faithful Christian, now passionate in his trust for God. This book recounts his journey to recover from severe head trauma and damage to his body. He gradually reveals his visions and sensations of Heaven, so lovely, intense, and detailed and yet still hard to imagine. Ultimately, his near d...more

I never read a book like this before. It is Captain Black’s true story about his Flight to Heaven—a plane crash…a lone survivor…A Journey To Heaven—And Back. At age 19, he was the lone survivor in a plane crash. His body was wrecked and he was in a coma for three days, during which time he experienced a bit of heaven. His story is both interesting and amazing! The book takes the reader through his spiritual journey as well as his physical one of making a recovery to fly again just a year after h...more

When I was fifteen, six friends and relatives abruptly passed away during a nine month time period. Their sudden passing left me shaken, feeling like my world as I knew it had tilted, and wondering what it was like for my loved ones now. My grief and questioning led me to a deeper faith in God through Jesus Christ.

I have remained very curious about what we have in store for us when we leave this life, and what it is like for my friends and relatives. I have read the descriptions of Heaven in t...more

Captain Black is a retired pilot who was the only survivor of an "unsurvivable" plane crash when he was a young man. He sustained horrific injuries that were expected to cripple him for life, but he was determined to fly again. He had the faith to ask for healing and believe he would receive it, faith that came from an incredible thing he experienced after the accident.

While he was in a coma, Dale Black went to Heaven. What he saw, heard and felt there changed his life. He talks about angels, mu...more

More than one book referencing an 'out of body' experience appeared to dominate my view of the smallest rack in a garage convenience store as I was travelling out of the hot Arizona desert to enjoy cooler climes. Why I chose this one is somewhat of a mystery because although I was familiar with the other titles, I had not read any of them. On reflection I am so very glad I chose Flight to Heaven. Faced with what appears to be an insurmountable task of overcoming horrendous injuries when Capt. Bl...more

I just finished reading A Flight to Heaven by Captain Dale Black. This wasn’t your typical
“heavenly experience” book. I love reading those books too - about people who have died and gone to Heaven and then been brought back to life, which is why I read this book to begin with, but this one was so much more.
I love how the majority of the book focused on Captain Black’s life both before and after the crash. I love how he took us through his spiritual experiences and how his heavenly experience c...more

1.5 stars.

I expected the book to be more focused on the journey to Heaven, but the book was mostly about the plane crash and the survivor's recovery. I did like the parts where the survivor put his faith in God to heal him when modern medicine could not. But preachy Bible verses and attempts to convert people to believing in Jesus Christ by asking them if they knew Jesus seemed awkward and forced.

This book is not "litt-ra-chaw"; it is a testimonial. As such, I approach it differently from fiction or even from other non-fiction. While I expect such a book to conform to minimal standards of literacy, such as complete sentences and reasonable fluidity, my main criterion is how the book moved me. Was it believable? Did I learn anything important and/or new? Did I gain insight?

As a Christian (Latter-day Saint), I am somewhat predisposed to look sympathetically on NDE stories, and I had heard...more

At the age of 19, Dale Black survived what the FAA described as an unsurvivable plane crash. Although he had a near-death, journey-to-Heaven experience, he was in a coma and didn't remember it for some time. After he remembered it, he discussed it with his grandfather/mentor, who told him he could tell the world about the experience and get a lot of attention or he could he could treat it as a sacred experience between him and God until he felt sure that God wanted him to tell his story. He deci...more

The only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is because of my very own personal reasons.
But other than that- this book was spectacular! It was written well, you wanted to turn the next page and everything about it spoke volumes.
Plus- there are very few bad comments about this book. Thats a plus for me!
So I advise you to read it.
With a box of tissues near by.
And maybe some chocolate.
And your very own Bible.
After you red it you may want to find a quiet room and have your very own conver...more

Testimonies of people visiting Heaven and returning to earth always fascinate me. None is verifiable and some of them, of course, are only phony sensationalism. There are, however, certain of them that ring true. Dale Black's story is one of them.

The book doesn't center around the experience Dale had in Heaven. Rather, it centers around God and the need for each human being to know God in a personal way. The time the author spent in Heaven is incidental to the main point of the book.

I've been to...more

This was a great book! I’ll admit that I was a bit disappointed to begin with because I assumed that Dale was the lone survivor of a commercial airliner crash, as opposed to a smaller aircraft; however, I found myself quickly caught up in the Dale’s story. It is hard to to imagine that he survived a crash that the FAA classified as “non-survivable;” but not only did he survive, he overcame his injuries and continued on to become a commercial pilot.

Dale’s journey to Heaven made him a changed man...more

Captain Dale Black, a retired airline pilot, spent six years working on his autobiography, which would tell the story of his trip to Heaven. Although he was content to keep his experience private, after forty years of silence, Dale felt that God led him to share his story publicly.

Flight To Heaven is the account of the horrific plane crash in 1969 that Dale miraculously survived, while the other two men in the plane perished. Although Dale was in a coma, he tells of an out of body experience in...more

This is an amazing true story. Dale Black was 19, a normal rebellious teenager. More than anything Dale loved to fly. He worked very hard to be able to afford lessons and got his pilot licenses. He went on a flight with two friends and at take off a horrible accident happened. Dale’s two friends were killed and he survived. Amazingly Dale didn’t have any internal injuries. While Dale was in a coma he visited Heaven.
Only two chapters are about his Heavenly visit, but they are precious. I love to...more

“All passengers and crew will be dead in twenty seven minutes if something drastic doesn’t change. And I will be responsible.”

So begins the story of Capt Dale Black, an airplane pilot who has just found himself in the midst of a dire situation. His story is a chilling account of his traumatic accident and near death experience but it is also an uplifting story about his miraculous recovery, his glimpse of heaven and his message...more

"Capt. Dale Black has flown as a commercial pilot all over the world, but one flight changed his life forever - an amazing journey to heaven and back. The only survivor of a horrific plane crash, Dale was hovering between life and death when he had a wondrous experience of heaven."

And now, my thoughts...

Flight to Heaven by Capt. Dale Black is his true life experience of being the only survivor in a horrific plane crash.
The author starts his story out trying to land a commercial plane and experiencing some problems. He mind then flashes back to another flight, a crash actually where he was the only survivor.
The year was 1969 and Capt. Black was just 19, and he had just gotten his pilots license. He is in a small plane with two other people, one his mentor and the other person a newly licensed pi...more

I was a little apprehensive about this book when I first started reading, as I always am with books about near-death experiences involving trips to or visions of heaven, hell, and everywhere in between. I had previously read 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper, which I wasn’t thrilled with. In addition to the weak writing, I was disappointed to read Tim Challies’ review at Discerning Reader which denounced the book as theologically incorrect. (I’m no theologian, but I think it’s important to exerc...more

A Definite 5-Stars for “Flight To Heaven”
I purchased this book as a gift for my dad but soon after I returned home I discovered a real problem existed. I couldn't put it down. What an awesome read! I am going to order several copies of Flight to Heaven to distribute to our pastor and church members, as well as all around our area, at hospitals, airports, libraries, etc. My father and I are also airline pilots, though he is now retired. Both of us have finished reading the book and rate it easil...more

Dale Black is rescued. However, almost every part of his body is broken, smashed or shaved off. Part of his face is shaved off. This book is an excellent testimony about a young man who survived what the FAA called an "unsurvivable" plane crash and was forever changed. Anyone who loves aeronautics will be especially intrigued.

The only down side--if there is one--is probably due to marketing. This book is presented as the story of a journey to heaven. That part of the book is smaller than I might have hoped, just as it is in the better-known "Ninety Minutes in Heaven," (which might have been subtitled, "and the Ninety Mo...more

I listened to this book on audio and got the extra benefit of the narrator being the the author. Although his voice was somewhat monotone, his emotions came through with every word. As he tells of his amazing survival he relives his ascent into the faith of God. It definitely came through as a life changing event for him and gives the reader a chance to think about their own faith.
Keegan Riley
I loved it! I try to read anything that connects with heaven, and this wonderfully illustrates to the reader how we should behave on a day to day basis. How to look at strangers with need in our hearts to connect with them on maybe the only level we can, which is through Jesus, and through the love of the Father. Brilliant read!
Brandy
I really enjoyed this book and I'm glad he decided to share his story. So many of these types of books are full of all the positive feel good aspects and he chose to share his journey including his doubts and anger and how he managed to keep believing. Very inspirational book!

Flight to Heaven:A Plane Crash...

Captain Black's changed life and his determination not to talk to anyone about his experience in heaven until God told him it was okay made this book believable for me.
Lisa
This is an excellent story and very well-written. Whether you believe in his experience or not, his story is very inspiring. He was most definitely changed for the better through his experience.

I know it's a memoir but the story felt self-centered. I could only imagine what some of the people he came across thought of his zealotry. He said that he had no shame in spreading the message of Gods love to perfect strangers. He implied that it was a divine miracle to land the jet in a desolate, dark foreign airport, where the African soldiers spoke perfect english and were eager to hear about Jesus Christ. He calls this a miracle but he ignores that Zambia was a British colony still in fear...more
