Heist Society (Heist Society #1)

Ally Carter
When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre...to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria... to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own--scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately...more

My husband once told me a story about a neighbour he had before his family moved to our city. His very friendly, community conscious neighbour had a mower stollen one night by a couple of drunken goons. His parents gave him their sympathy and inquired as to why he didn't call the police. He replied that he didn't need to.
Whoever this man really was and whatever he really did, I won't expound on. It's enough to say that two days later his mower was returned to his yard. Cleaned. With a free case...more

I love it when you get excited when seeing a book you never heard of before, and then while reading, it turns out to be fantastic, instead of the opposite. I am now a huge fan of Ally Carter's. I have her other series (the Gallagher Girls), but I just haven't had the time to read them yet...what, with so many other books to read, but not now. I wont wait to read them.

I love tales about thieves and con artists, book series like The Curse Workers and movies like Ocean’s Eleven. I love it when seemingly random events come together neatly and cleverly in the end. Therefore, I loved Heist Society. It is admittedly not as clever as White Cat, for example, but I had a hard time putting it down and that’s a big deal these days.

Okay, the only reason I wanted to read this book was because I took a course called “Art in Popular Literature” and it was an awesome class that really sparked my interest in art. Perhaps that wasn’t the right perspective to view this book from because the complete absence and respect paid to the true real works of art in this book left me absolutely pissed.

After a childhood spent assisting her father, one of the world’s most talented art thieves, Katarina Bishop tries to leave the family business behind when she forges her way into a New England boarding school.
She quickly discovers, though, that her past is inescapable. Her father has been accused of stealing already stolen masterpieces from a dangerous Italian billionaire. Certain that her father is innocent, Kat resolves to find the missing paintings and return them to their unsavory owner, wh...more

Definitely 5 stars! Put it this way, I got this on audiobook from the library, finished it today in the car on the way to work, and stopped at the book store on the way home from work to buy a copy to keep. What a great premise! A bunch of preteens pulling off an Ocean's 11 worthy heist all in the name of saving family.

I haven't read an Ally Carter book in a while so I forgot how much I love them. This one is no exception. I am pretty stingy with perfect ratings but Heist Society deserves it!
Katarina Bishop has given up the family business, or so she thinks. When an old friend shows up with a message she is plunged right back in. How can she turn away when it's her father's life on the line? She can't, so with the help of her teenaged crew she plans the biggest robbery of her career. Will she succeed or will s...more

As a fan of Ally Carter's Gallagher Girls series, I was surprised to find out that she was coming out with another series. However, surprise quickly turned into anticipation after I read the summary of Heist Society, especially since it was about thieves.
Heist Society was a great, quick read. The plot was suspenseful, full of twists and turns; the characters were unique and interesting; and the writing was quite dramatic at times, making certain scenes have more of an impact to the story.

I'll be honest, what first drew me to this book was the cover. I spotted it on a blog I was browsing and clicked over to Goodreads to learn more. I quickly learned it was teen fiction with an engaging plot straight out of Ocean's Eleven or The Italian Job. Those are two movies that I absolutely love, by the way. I minored in Art History as an undergrad so I'm instantly attracted to any type of book related to art, especially if it has to do with crime.

A fast-paced globetrotting adventure, Heist Society is good page-turning fun. It's a bit like an Ocean's Eleven (or seven, in this case) for teens.
Katarina Bishop is your typical young-adult heroine, i.e. she's atypically smart, observant, witty, and a babe who doesn't yet think she is attractive. She's surrounded by a motley crew of other young thieves--lifelong friend Hale, her busty cousin Gabrielle, a pair of brothers, a computer expert, and a hot young newcomer whom she might have reason no...more

I'm a sucker for thieves. Girl thieves, boy thieves, teenage thieves with angsty problems. It's one of the reasons I love Artemis Fowl so much. (Besides the funnies, the characters, the plot, the scifi...) It's like my obsession with assassins. I love thieves in the same way. They're sneaky, crafty, and usually have crazy plots to go with the fast pace they're written in.

I know know if it's just me getting old and pessimistic about everything, but I didn't really like Heist Society by Ally Carter. It might be because I disliked the Danish translation or because I'm simply too old to care for young adults reading about young adults with a twisted life.
In my opinion it would have been a whole lot better if the novel was told by a first person narrator, and what would have been even better was if Kat was in her twenties (I really must be too old for this kind of b...more

Characters:
The characters of Heist Society are endearing, and really the stars of the show; Kat and Hale particularly stood out for me. Kat's confident in her thieving (to the point of recklessness at times) and yet vulnerable about her future and her role in her family. She's arguably mature in some instances and not so mature in others — in other words, she's just like any teen despite her unusual circumstances. She's still just trying to figure out what she wants in life. I would have liked t...more

Three stars in the best way possible. :)
This is the story of Katarina Bishop. She is a teenager, a boarding school reject, and an unambiguously moralistic thief. Kat and her posse of fellow teen thieves are on a mission to clear her dad's name of a dangerous crime before the dude he supposedly ripped off (who has the coolest name ever, Arturo Taccone) uses her father as an example of what happens when Mr. Taccone is crossed. Intrigue!

Loved it! Hilarious, intriguing and realistically well-woven!
The world of thieves is a real buzz - especially when the characters in question are essentially a team of mischievous, energetic, IQ-blows-all-standarts teens; a group of young adults who are not just ready to face the world, but have grown up facing it, and so have developed a sense of disillusionment, some sarcastic tendencies, a love for danger and excitement, along with ties of friendship that turn them more into a self-sufficient...more

I have been looking forward to this book for months, so maybe that's why I was a little bit disappointed with it. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable. I liked Kat a lot, which is important for me: I have to like the main character to enjoy a book. I loved the whole "family business" element... I know Ally is a fan of Alias, and I think the book had a similar feel to it, even though it's her other books that are about spies, not this one. One negative is that I didn't like that the back story wa...more

After reading the premise I was unbelievably excited. Ally Carter continues to write books that rock my socks off. When I first read the summary of Heist Society, it appealed to me more than her "Gallagher Girls" series. To be honest, I'm not too sure why. I guess I just liked the idea of a young thief better than the idea of a school for spies (Sounds too much like Spy Kids, if you know what I mean. Liked those movies when I was younger, laughed at the idea of going to the new one today).

I do not have the ability to express exactly why I love this book. Needless to say, it's really really good.
The camaraderie and friendship between everyone is one of my many favorite aspects of Heist 1. Everything about this book is amazing. The characters, the cons, the writing, the story, etc.

Katarina Bishop just wants a normal, average life. She has had enough adventure and globetrotting to last her a lifetime. In an effort to take control and change the direction of her life, Kat enrolls at Colgon School, which is an incredibly prestigious prep school. However, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. When the headmaster’s Porsche ends up on a roof, Kat is blamed and forced back into the Heist Society that she desperately wanted to leave.

Kat's family business isn't your typical venture. For this 15 year old, learning how to pull off a con or steal from a maximum security facility was like learning to tie your shoes or ride a bike. It's just what you learn how to do, surrounded by the people who know the ropes. And even though she had decided she was done with that life, a family friend with connections gives her the perfect reason to do one last job: some incredible artwork has been stolen and her dad has been framed.

Katarina Bishop is from a crime family. No, not the mafia. She is from a family of thieves. Her parents started using her for a decoy when she was three. Now she has pulled her own con to leave the family and get into a prestigious boarding school, but someone is trying to frame her to get her kicked out of school. Why would anyone do that?

I’ve always been a fan of Ally Carter’s writing (I’m anxiously awaiting the newest Gallagher book to be on the e-book store), so when Heist Society was announced, I was thrilled. Not just because it’s by Ms. Carter, but also because I love con movies/shows (Leverage, Oceans 11, The Italian Job). So I had high hopes for this book, maybe too high.
