Stephen Fry's secret wife speaks out at last...

Enjoyed a nice cuppa this morning with a HobNob and Jeremy Kyle. There was a woman on there who'd been married 16 years without realising her husband was gay. Extraordinary! Which reminds me, it's our 16th anniversary in a few weeks. What a coincidence.

Stephen Fry - actor, writer, raconteur and wit. Cerebral and sophisticated,...more

I'd been following the Twitter account for a while and I'm a big fan of Mr Fry (Edna's celebrity husband) so when I saw the book discounted in 'The Works' I thought I'd give it a try.

The two star rating says "it was okay" and that sums it up entirely. It's okay. There are some very clever one-liners but the ongoing narrative about Mrs Fry potentially finding out about her husband's life as a celebrity isn't particularly or engaging. The sections about her poetry also isn't great.

The book works b...more

A complete year of diaries entries by Stephen Fry's secret wife, Edna. She cheerfully discusses their children's anti-social behavior, including teen pregnancy and school counseling, her own literary ambitions and shares her poems, and relays life with her husband, window washer and sometime taxi-driver, Stephen Fry. Though she often thinks she has seen Stephen's face on a passing bus and people get excited to hear she's married to him, Mrs Fry thinks it strange that anyone wants to hear what it...more

Hilarious.

Just... Wow. The casual references to child neglect, the horrible puns, the terribly misguided self-image of Edna and the way the family's entire lifestyle is a parody of a certain class of English people... It's just fantastic.

The best part is that there are also a lot of references to famous literary works, etc, that Edna never gets, but are still entertaining to the reader. There are also a lot of parodies, some of which are actually worked out in the novel, such as an alternative...more

An amusing, easy-to-read diary of the rather surreal life of the wife of Mr Stephen Fry - and to think we believed him to be a single gay man! To say that Mrs Fry is eccentric is rather like saying that the Pope is slightly averse to contraception, and her relationship with her famous husband leaves something to be desired.

For the most part it's beautifully crafted and weighted humour - as befits the diary of someone who initially came to the notice of the world through her compact tweets - even...more

Looking through these reviews I can't believe how many people who claim to be fans of Stephen Fry just don't get this book. It was hilarious and quintessentially Stephen. Stephen did not write this book, it was written by one of his Twitter followers who call themselves Mrs Stephen Fry https://twitter.com/MRSSTEPHENFRY They were an early presence in his Twitter life and turned out to be quite witty themselves and caught his attention. In the beginning Stephen followed his followers back (I kept...more

Edna Fry, relentlessly clueless wife of famed actor, intellectual, Twitter god, etc. Stephen Fry, reveals his secret life as a boorish inebriate and karaoke addict in this tell-all diary. Everything from his predilection for sexual role play to the antics of his brood of devil children (at least five of them, possibly more) is covered, between Edna’s own misadventures in foreign lands, cooking, and poetry class. The puns are shameless and the recipes are outrageous, but the premise works better...more

The problem with most British humour is that it relies on two premises: 1. Clever wordplay and innuendo, and, 2. If all else fails dress up and act like a woman.
The only problem is, #2 is about as funny as Mel Brooks spouting off Yiddish phrases; it was a hoot for a while, but now we're all over it. Thankfully, Brooks seems to have taken the hint and no longer makes pictures, but alas, the British seem to cling to cross dressing as a legitimate form of humour. That Mr Fry could slump to such dep...more

It was quite a shock the day I was on Twitter and discovered that not only was British legend, Stephen Fry, married but his poor wife, Edna, had taken to social media to give followers an insight into the man we all thought we knew. Late in 2010 Edna’s diary was released offering a year of the trials, spam, tribulations and Stephen’s drunkenness that this poor housewife has had to contend with.

The diary entries cover almost every day of the year. There are one or two blank dates but there is usu...more

This was through outly fun book to read. It didn't take me more than three days to finish the book, partly beacause I was already past my library due date, but mainly because it was just so entertaining book. Who could resist Edna Frys fantasticly open and twisted way of living and writing about it?

I'd recommend this book to anyone, who knows and enjoys the work of Stephen Fry and who has a slightly twisted sence of humor. It's definitely worth all the 300+ pages.

Very amusing, easy-to-read literature. People in other reviews have been saying that anyone who lived outside of the UK wouldn't be able to get the jokes, but I live in Australia and I'm pretty sure that I understood all of the jokes. (At least all of the ones that I picked up on, anyway!)
I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes English comedy and knows at least a decent amount about British culture.

Some of the jokes made me groan while others had me practically falling off the settee and onto the floor due to extreme laughter.

Great fun and I am so glad it was recommended by one our reading group members. Of course, some of the humour might be lost on non-Brits just as I sometimes feel a little perplexed reading (or watching) things that relate a lot to USA popular culture.

So perfect light weight fare for dull January days. Hopefully Mrs Fry will produce more of these in the coming years....more

As one would expect from the fabulous Mr(s) Fry, this is witty, self-effacing and just plain hilarious. The whole world of Mrs Fry is just fantastic, but which is the real Stephen - loutish drunk or the erudite National Treasure we all know and love? Even a nod to Fry's erstwhile m'colleague is just fantastic. As well as the side splitting trip to Paris. Couldn't stop reading. Totally fab.

It was on my Christmas wishlist so I had something to chuckle over in between the overeating.

And it was funny BUT after a while it just felt like a guerilla plug for the Fry Chronicles.
I'd been a Twitter follower of @MrsStephenFry for a while and it did feel that everything I'd loved about the Twitterstream (the short pithy comments) was stretched to breaking in the diary entries.
Olga Lempert
Delightfully irreverent and indecent; full of puns, for which I have a soft spot. Much like A Bit of Fry and Laurie, with ONLY the "Crossdressing Stephen" sketches. Feels like a giant inside joke you're a part of if you've been following Stephen Fry, his endeavors, and his friends. The good kind of silly. 4/5 because of the prompt way the vegetarian storyline was abandoned.
Gemma
Brilliantly funny. I'm sure I looked a right fool sitting with a weird smile on my face when I was reading this.

It doesn't take long to read, but I'm sure the more you read it the more funny it will get.
And for some reason it's not too much of a stretch of the imagination to picture Mr Fry in some of the situations contained in the pages.

Stephen Fry has always been unpredictable as a writer, often blending his sharp wit with shocking plot lines and highlighting the grotesque in society in all its forms. So when I started reading Mrs. Fry's Diary, I thought it was some sort of elaborate joke. Just like Stephen, I thought, to construct a meta-novel, at the end of which his normal sardonic self will emerge like a rather rotund butterfly from a pupa.

But it was not to be. The tirade of awful puns and 70s-style innuendo is, in fact,...more

I think I annoyed people on the train because reading this (and occasionally quoting funny bits to my fiance) made me laugh so hard.
Stephen Fry is witty, punny, and has a very loveable talent for laughing about himself and stereotypes. My favourite bits were the reasons for the cancellation of Edna's creative writing course.
Nicola Palmer
Brilliant. A quick read, or good for five minutes of laughter a day if you just read a few diary entries at a time. I constantly admired Fry's wit. I think the 'Rings of Fire' curry house is my favourite. There, they had the 'C.S.Lewis Special Set Meal. It's like the regular set meal, only naanier.'
Ruth Hastings
Love love love Stephen Fry...so had to grab this book when I saw it.

It's full of funny one liners, I love all the references to people and things related to his life, love the idea of him having a secret life!

Don't know if I'd recommend it, but can't say anything bad about Stephen fry!
Benedikte Van Eeghem
Witty. Funny. Absurd. The perfect book to make you realize that laughing is not an art - it is a moral duty.

My favourite quote from this diary: "The best part of arguing with Stephen is the make-up sex. The worst part is wiping the make-up off the pillow afterwards."
Kate
This Quick read introduces the world to Edna, Stephan Fry's seceret wife. I got through this book very quickly, it's not going to stretch your limits too much! quite funny in places, and I liked all the tales of the children, but edna is my favouriet.
Jacqui Gordon
Stephen Fry's secret wife speaks out in this tell-all diary about Stephen's double life as a window cleaner, womaniser and sometimes taxi driver. There is poetry, spam recipes and hilarious antidotes about this family and their 5 or 6 or more children.
Joe
I tried to like this book so much I realised I was actually fake laughing to myself... Who was I trying to fool??? The idea of the original Twitter blog was funny, but when laid out in book form it was amusing at best, tired and humourless for the rest.
Jules
Hilarious - and very very clever. You have to follow Mrs Stephen Fry on Twitter to really get it - and there are lots of english referencese that I didnt understand. Very funny ending.
LOVE Stephen Fry - this there's more to come from Mrs Stephen Fry
Katherine
Absolutely hilarious. I don't care who she *really* is - I love Mrs Stephen Fry. She's utterly fantastic and marvellously revolting.

She has definitely earned a place among such names as Roald Dahl, Monty Python, the Goons and Hyacinth Bucket.

Stephen Fry could yodel baa baa black sheep dressed as a banana he would make it arch, witty, incisive and erudite. The man is a legend, and this book is a brilliant, if extremely left-field, addition to his oeuvre.
J.T. Wilson
Risible but undeniably entertaining story of Edna Fry, clueless poet, negligent mother and Spam culinary genius whose window-cleaner husband Stephen Fry has a secret life.
John
Hardly a great literary work but laugh out loud funny - especially having just read SF's autobiography. Follows in the great tradition of Keith Waterhouse and his diary of Mrs Pooter (as in "Diary of a Nobody")The idea that there's a secret Mrs SF (not to mention a Mrs Norton, a Mrs Winton and a Mrs Barrowman) is just inspired and the diary format makes for very easy reading. Even SF seems to approve. Cleverly weaves in some real aspects of his life, e.g. the fact he drives a taxi and constantly...more
