I wasn’t quite sure how this was going to fair with me when I first started it, but I have to say it wasn’t as harsh as I expected it to be. Although some of the sex scenes are a bit “gruff”, I would not consider them to be brutal in any respect. I’ve read much worse where the characters are more demanding of one another. The title and the book description are far worse than the reality of the book itself.

I bought this book for two reasons:

1. It's set in Boston and written by a local.
2. The characters act out rape fantasies.

It met my expectations completely on both accounts. Boston was a living, breathing character and the rape scenes were deliciously dark and satisfying.

It met my expectations completely on both accounts. Boston was a living, breathing character and the rape scenes were deliciously dark and satisfying.

Laurel White is nearly thirty but she's spinning her wheels working as a waitress at a tourist trap. She hasn't been able to make a relationship work long-term and she's stuck living with two roommates in a small apartment in the North End. When she sees a bruiser of a construction worker break up an escalating lovers' spat at a downtown park, she's immediately drawn to him, following after him to ask him on a date. He initially turns her down, but when she presses him, he writes an address on a napkin and hands it to her.

“Friday and Saturday nights, eight to one. Tell the guy working that Flynn invited you...If that doesn’t scare you off,” he said, “you can try askin’ me out again.”

As it turns out, Flynn has invited her to one of his boxing matches - held in the basement of a South Boston dive bar - and to meet Pam, the woman he has rough sex with. Before he gets involved with her, he's letting her know just what sort of beast she's poking at. When Pam invites Laurel to watch her and Flynn "scratch each other's kinky itches," that night, Laurel agrees to go, intrigued despite herself.

Laurel and Flynn then forge a "friends with benefits" sort of arrangement where she explores a hitherto unknown part of herself that is unspeakably turned on by rape fantasy.

The book is in third person, but told exclusively from the heroine's point of view. Flynn is a chatty Cathy (while somehow managing to stay the strong silent type as well, not sure how that happened) so he's made completely real to the reader despite the lack of his POV. Being in Laurel's head is integral to enjoying the unorthodox sex scenes. Watching Flynn with another woman would have been off-putting if the reader didn't know how much Laurel enjoyed the spectacle. The forceful rape scenes - complete with fighting, spitting, and name-calling - would have been disturbing without the firm assurance that Laurel felt completely safe and was completely on board.

As a result of the focused POV, the book relies strongly on dialog, and does a smashing job of it. When Laurel expresses her nervousness, Flynn calms her nerves in a way that both explains what they're doing and gives a glimpse into the kind of person Flynn is.

“Neither of us is here to prove anything,” he said. “We’re here to have fun, and for you to maybe get your motor cranked like you never knew it could be. Or not. Who knows? My ego’s not tied up in this going a certain way. The only thing that makes me nervous is hurting you by mistake, and I trust myself enough to think that’s unlikely.”

The characters are constantly communicating and nearly all of the character development comes through in their own words. Since they're basically talking it out with me, they felt especially real. Flynn was pitch-perfect working-class Boston as well. The bit where he intentionally held up another driver on Laurel's tiny North End street just to be a prick was classic. I lawled.

Where the book fell apart for me was the ending. Ms. McKenna may insist she writes erotica and not erotic romance, but whatever she intended, she's effectively written 90% of an erotic romance. Just as the characters are admitting feelings for each other, exposing vulnerabilities and showing greater insight into who they are, the book ends without much of a resolution to it. It's not completely devoid of a HFN, but to end a book 5 pages after introducing a number of new character revelations? Not nice. Sure neat and tidy is ultimately forgettable, but you can have resolution *and* leave open possibilities at the same time. I was just the teeniest bit frustrated after finishing it.(less)

What there is (amazingly) is very good character development, a slow building relationship, and some hot sex scenes that push the boundaries of some people's comfort level. In a very yummy and steamy way.

The story is told from the point of view of Laurel. She is bored with life and sort of stuck. She is no longer pursuing a career in her field of study and she is not sure what she wants out of life. Laurel meets Flynn and pursues him for a date. What follows is Laurel being the aggressor in setting up a date and time to be alone with Flynn. The pursuit was slightly uncomfortable because I kept imagining myself chasing down a hot guy in a park and asking him for date – I couldn't wrap my brain around it. But Cara McKenna is good at pushing those boundaries for her readers. In the end, Flynn makes Laurel push hard to convince him that they should get together. Most girls would give up - -I definitely would. But Laurel doesn't and admittedly, it feels odd. Not because it is written poorly – just the opposite. McKenna writes the scene well, but it feels odd for the female to keep insisting on a date! Flynn is a construction worker by day and an underground street fighter by night. Once the story takes off, the roles are turned and Laurel is no longer the aggressor. We soon learn why Flynn made it so difficult for Laurel, Flynn makes it clear what he needs and wants from a sexual relationship -- complete submission from his partner. He doesn't want to tie her up, he doesn't want to beat her or hurt her but he wants her to submit in a sexual relationship. But he tells her upfront and gives her a chance to walk away. Laurel doesn't walk away.

What follows are some very hot sex scenes. Flynn is a big sweetheart and very sensitive in everyday interactions. Slowly, Flynn and Laurel get to know each other. What McKenna writes so well in her erotica novellas, is the unraveling of the male character and his complete surrender to his partner. We are introduced to a strong male, completely in charge - -but in the end, he becomes completely undone by Laurel and that is the hottest thing in this book. I would have loved for this book to be longer and I would love for Cara McKenna to revisit these characters.

I am not a fan of BDSM books nor am I a fan of rape fantasies – this is not what Willing Victim is about. So if you like erotica and well written characters, then I highly recommend Willing Victim.(less)

OMG. I'm annoyed. You have an author that can clearly write, characters that are terrific, and you put the story in a short story? So. Unfair.

Seriously, I loved the characters (ok, how can you not adore Flynn) and I loved the story and I want more. Get rid of the title, the cover, and add about 200 pages because the writing and the story deserve a lot more page time.

This is a 5 star story stuck in a 3 star package.

4-4 1/2 stars Loved this one and devoured it in one sitting. I was not put off by the rough sex, it was more dirty talk than pain and it worked for me. Loved the characters, especially Flynn-very opposites attract (at least at the beginning). He was rough around the edges, but had a tender heart. My only regret was that I wish it was longer. Oh man! He is a hell of a dirty talker! Wow! Sometimes dirty talk makes me cringe, but not in this book. This story was dark and erotic and super hot...these characters had some major chemistry. Both characters had a somewhat tortured upbringing--which did well in lending a hand to the dark sexual passion they shared.

I will be reading more by this author for sure!

I wanted to read this book after i read the blurb & read some of my friends reviews for it. I am normally very sensitive to rape scenes (or in this case faked raped) & i normally will not read a book if i know it features rape. I guess i wanted to see if i could read this without freaking out, test myself? I don't know what it was but i managed it anyway :)

I think Willing Victim really should have a different title. The title makes the book out to be scarier than what it is and most likely puts people off. Or maybe I'm just a little bit sick in the head and think that rough sexplay is not only okay but freaking hot.

The sex was front and center in this one and believe me when I say it did not disappoint. The woman knows how to write a scorching sex scene. The acting out of rape fantasies is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it was not as over the top as I anticipated. This could be because Laurel and Flynn communicated their needs prior to hitting the sheets. This made the relationship very realistic - how often have you read erotica where everyone just falls into bed and miraculously knows what makes the other person tick? So it was refreshing to see a couple talk, especially with such an extreme kink on the table. I won't even get into Flynn's dirty talk, but I'll just say I'd reread the book based on this alone :-)

Like another reviewer said, the book kind of just ended. Laurel and Flynn were turning the corner to something more concrete and all of a sudden "The End" - huh!?!? I was disappointed, but maybe Ms. McKenna was going for the "it doesn't always have to end hand delivered with a nice pretty bow". In that case I guess it works.

So, I loved this book because it was different. The way the characters related to each other - different. The hot sex with clear communication on the side - different. The world of underground boxing as a back drop - interesting and different. However, despite all of this, I just felt it could have been taken to the next level and it wasn't. The book was told entirely from Laurel's POV and I believe this was a huge mistake. When you have a hero as multilayered and fascinating as Flynn, the reader wants to get into his dirty mind intimately. All in all, a great read though.(less)

Okay... this one pushed the limits of my comfort zone and I almost set it aside as "not-for-me" with the first sexual encounter. But, I persevered and ended up mostly liking it in the end.

Okay story but uncomfortable beginning with hero banging someone else in front of lead girl. Also, no real resolution between leads other than an idea of what might happen in the future, plus most of the story felt too cold.

Ok. Flynn may have dirtied talked his way into my heart. This book was raw, dirty, powerful and sweet.

Re-read in March 2013. The fact this isn't a full length book is the only thing keeping it off my 5 Star & Favorites lists.

Cara McKenna has a way of writing characters & sex that is just so stunningly real, that it's just magic.
