I have read most of Belva Plain's work and have never been disappointed. She writes historical fiction with great clarity and accuracy. This reminded me that we really need to find out for ourselves about our ancestors, because, even our parents can be misled by their experience and may not have the whole story, and to have bitterness towards an ancestor will only hurt us. Search and find the real story for yourself and then forgive and forget what you don't understand.

To be honest, this book was an absolute pain to get through.. at least for me. I found the pace to be incredibly slow, the conversations to be forced, the characters to be the same.. And, before chapter 18 in my book (probably the last twenty or so pages of the book), I was convinced that the book review I was reading was for a completely different book. Heavens, I'm still convinced that it gives the book more dimension than the book actually has to begin with.

Belva Plain is one of my favorite authors. The trials of escaping Europe before/during the war is mind boggling to me. The ending is a bit of a surprise. I didn't see that coming.
Belva Plain is such an engaging writer- I loved her "Evergreen" which to me is a classic...she writes in a way that is so effortless to read- the kind of books with such engaging and interesting character you cant put them down! She makes her characters people you can identify with and you develop feelings for them and you cant wait to see what happens to them! I really enjoy her work....This book was even better in the end as it comes full circle and proving even in families people ne...more
I enjoyed this book, it was a quick read. I was pleased by a few of the surprises that the story had... I didn't see them coming!
This is a great story. Belva Plain writes stories in such a way that you feel you are part of the family.
A poignant story of pre-war Germany through current America. Full of history, drama, and love.
Belva Plain is one of my favorite authors, always manages to catch you off guard with her endings.
Again its about complex human nature relation and so much but again its fun to read

Enjoyed
This is a good book. It held my attention and was hard to put down. It starts just prior to the holocaust and ends in the 90's with the lives of multiple generations of a family. Very intriguing.
This is the story of two sisters who escape from Nazi Germany in 1939. Their parents don't survive. Caroline is beautiful, and pregnant with a missing lover. Lore is adopted and not so attractive. They eventually immigrate to the US to begin new lives, but their past haunts them when a love interest comes between them.
A woman's life changes when the Nazis come to power in Germany. Caroline Hartzinger's boyfriend becomes a Nazi and abandons her because she is half-Jewish. She escapes to America, marries a fellow refugee and gives birth to the Nazi's son.
