«Non ti dimenticherò mai. E neppure gli altri gatti.» stridette lei già con metà delle zampe fuori dalla balaustra, perché come dicevano i versi di Atxaga, il suo piccolo cuore era lo stesso degli equilibristi.

Ok, ammetto di essere ancora una bambinetta sentimentale. E' impossibile essere grandicelli e vaccinati e piangere per La gabbianella e il gatto. Eppure, ebbene sì. Io l'ho fatto. E poi mi vanto di non avere la lacrimuccia facile.

I really appreciate some things about this story. I loved the camaraderie and the distinct characters of the port cats. I thought it was great how they are so honorable, especially Zorba, who goes above and beyond to honor the dying wishes of a gull help raise her baby seagull until the baby is able to fly. The conversations between the cats are so much fun, especially when the Col. and SevenSeas are in the mix. Great fun and well realized characters, especially for such a short book....more 3.5 STARS

I really appreciate some things about this story. I loved the camaraderie and the distinct characters of the port cats. I thought it was great how they are so honorable, especially Zorba, who goes above and beyond to honor the dying wishes of a gull help raise her baby seagull until the baby is able to fly. The conversations between the cats are so much fun, especially when the Col. and SevenSeas are in the mix. Great fun and well realized characters, especially for such a short book. Too, I really liked the ending. I can't really say why without giving things away, but it was both surprising and satisfactory. I also love some of the things we learn about in the story, like DaVinci's flying machine. A great way to introduce kids to the wide world of wonder that is the Encyclopedia!

Now, a few things I was not so keen about: The tale seemed too didactic for my taste. It really hits over the head with how bad humans are when they pollute the ocean, and when they exploit animals. Not that I want to support pollution or keeping animals in cages, but I don't want a sermon about it and I don't think kids do, either. I wish there could have been a few more "good" humans featured in the story, to help kids see that there are things they can do to help. The messages could have been even stronger if they were conveyed more subtly, I feel. Also, a few things just felt really weird and not necessary to me--like the monkey drinking beer all the time. And mentioning that the human likes to smoke and contemplate life. I didn't really feel these are necessary to a children's story, though perhaps it is a cultural thing as I believe smoking and drinking are generally more acceptable and "the norm" in Germany compared to California.

Overall, I think this is a worthwhile story, especially for cat lovers. I think some of the messages were really beautiful—I love how the chick feels so at home with the cats, so well loved and accepted, yet also feels her inner-gull yearning to stretch her wings and fly. Parents should know, though, that it contains some very sad scenes, such as an oil spill which covers a gull and eventually kills her, and also the instances of drinking.

The illustrations are generally charming (though the one of the monkey was kinda creepy and the one of the gull in the oil slick is so sad!) and I just love Zorba! I could practically feel his fluffy black fur and feel him purring. What an awesome "Mommy"--and a very special, honorable cat!(less)

Funny and moving both. Imaginative. I just wish the bird the cats rescued were a more interesting one. Seagulls, as a species, don't need help. Oh, and btw, pelicans aren't ugly, either. Still, it's a sweet fable for all ages.

Zorba, dopo lo schifo iniziale, prova a ripulirla, leccandole le piume, ma Kengah sa che non servirà a niente, sa che morirà comunque, perché la maledizione dei mari non perdona. Dice a Zorba che con le poche forze che le rimangono ha intenzione di provare a deporre il primo, e ultimo, uovo della sua vita. Prima di farlo però strappa a Zorba tre promesse: non mangerà l'uovo, se ne prenderà cura finché non nascerà la gabbianella e poi le insegnerà a volare.
Zorba promette frettolosamente, poi va alla ricerca di aiuto. Riunisce i suoi amici, gatti del porto come lui: Colonello, Segretario, Diderot. È quest'ultimo che, consultando l'enciclopedia, scopre che il petrolio può essere smacchiato solo con la benzina. Dopo che Segretario ha intinto la sua coda nella benzina i gatti del porto tornano a casa di Zorba, dove però Kengah è già morta. Mentre le chiudono le ali Zorba si accorge che è riuscita davvero a deporre l'uovo. A quel punto è costretto a confessare le sue promesse e tutti, a loro volta, promettono di aiutarlo, perché la promessa di Zorba impegna di fatto tutti i gatti del porto.
Zorba si trasforma in una chioccia, per venti giorni cova quell'uovo di gabbiano come fosse un tesoro, lo cova fin quando sente beccare e vede uscire una gabbianella che lo scambia per la sua mamma. Dovrà accudirla, nutrirla, difenderla dai topi dai gatti del palazzo di fronte che la vedono come un ottimo spuntino. Soprattutto dovrà insegnarle a spiccare il volo.
E sull'orlo del baratro, quel volo Fortunata saprà spiccarlo, perché è così che funziona: vola solo chi osa farlo e certo non al primo tentativo.(less)

I'd like to know, wouldn't you? Or when is the last time I have read a book about a seagull? Books abound about dogs and cats, to a lesser extent about mice and rats, but not so much about birds. Among those, when is the last time I have read a book that is not about a lost or stranded animal seeking its o...more Titles intrigue me. Consider for example: The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught her to Fly. Immediately, the title prompts all kinds of questions: How can a cat teach a seagull to fly? I'd like to know, wouldn't you? Or when is the last time I have read a book about a seagull? Books abound about dogs and cats, to a lesser extent about mice and rats, but not so much about birds. Among those, when is the last time I have read a book that is not about a lost or stranded animal seeking its owner? The title alone made me read this book.

As for the book, sigh, it reads like a first novel. Some parts worked well; others not so well. The main flaws were the sentimental, sometimes preachy tone, along with an overly exhuberant cast of minor characters. There are skinny Secretario, the Colonel, smart Einstein, two more unnamed alley cats.... and these are just the cats. There's also a chimp, a gang of rats, and three humans. In a book of just over 100 pages, that's far too many characters to keep track of. Fortunately, the two main characters, Zobra the cat and Lucky the seagull, are sympathetic characters whom I care enough about to put up with the overwhelming cast ensemble. The tale also engages. How can it not? After all, it's about the unlikely pairing of a cat and a seagull. As a bonus, there is also a spattering of humor throughout--especially in the second half.

Children's books, especially older ones, often contain morals. Yet the less explicit the author is about the message, the more palatable it is. Unfortunately, some pages of this book read like an educational video--or, worse, a tract. For example, Sepulved teaches that "oil glues to the wings of a bird" thereby immobilizing and eventually killing them. Sepulved also preaches, through the cats, that "it's with the best intentions that humans cause the greatest damage". To illustrate, the cats refer to human Harry who knows his chimp is fond of beer. Every time the chimp is thirsty, Harry hands him a beer. Now the chimp is an alchoholic. As for the seagulls, they're dying because of all the pollution humans put into their oceans. In a way, the message is effective: I must have learned it, because I am paraphrasing it back to you. Yet truly, how many of us fondly remember school videos for any other reason that they represented escape from schoolwork? As for tracts, well, if we even bother to read them, we all know where we toss them in the end.

Yet there is still that title to contend with: How can a cat teach a seagull to fly? For that matter, how do a cat and a seagull even meet? Well, once upon a time, a cat came across a dying seagull who made him promise to watch over her egg, not EAT it, and when the time is right to teach her baby to fly.

I cannot honestly say that every page of this book held my attention, but I will still recommend the book. Luis Sepulved's passion for the care of nature sparkles on every page, which is something I commend. One day I hope to integrate such passion for nature into my stories, except with a subtler tone. Moreover, this is a short and sweet tale about honor. Zobra fights alley cats and rats and eventually even breaks a cat taboo--all in an attempt to honor his vow to a dying seagull. I like Zobra! And I like Lucky, who initially sees herself as a cat. If you can ignore the other flaws of the book, their story is worth the read.(less)

I know it is just a fable, an allegory or something. A message with a moral, but it felt like something more.

I know I am sentimental. I gush over kittens and puppies, not so much human babies since they remind me too much of adult humans. Anyway, now I have to admit I am a hopeless sucker for this kind of story.

Tôi hiểu là tác giả làm thế để giúp các em nhỏ có thể vừa đọc, vừa được giáo dục và rèn luyện đạo đức, nhưng quả thật, nếu ai đó đứng trước mặt và giảng đạo về 1 đống lí thuyết suông, liệu bạn có nhớ hay ấn tượng nỗi một chút gì không? Một quyển tiểu thuyết thực sự phải khiến ta tự "cảm thấy" và "nhận thấy" những thông điệp mà tác giả muốn gửi gắm đến đọc giả qua mạch truyện, qua sự chuyển biến và hành động của các nhân vật xuyên suốt tác phẩm, để khi gấp cuốn sách lại, ta có thể suy ngẫm về những gì mình đã học được, chứ không phải bằng những dòng văn xuôi vô vị, điều đó khiến câu truyện rất thiếu tự nhiên và khi đọc, ngoài thông điệp về việc giữ lời hứa, tôi có cảm như mình đang bị ép phải nhét vào đầu một đống giáo điều.

- Có thể bây giờ bạn đang nghĩ vì đây là một quyển sách dành cho lứa tuổi nhi đồng nên tác giả chọn cách viết như vậy để các em dễ hiểu hơn, nhưng chính vấn đề xã hội nổi bật nhất của tác phẩm là ô nhiễm môi trường, cụ thể là ô nhiễm môi trường biển, lại được thể hiện quá yếu ớt và nhàm chán. Cuốn tiểu thuyết đã thành công trong việc chuyển tải đến các những kiến thức về cấu tạo máy bay của Leonardo da Vinci, về từ điển bách khoa, khơi gợi trí tưởng tượng của của các em thiếu nhi, tuy vậy, đối với vấn đề tràn dầu thì lại bị bỏ dở. Xuyên suốt câu chuyện, ngoài việc nhân vật, các chú mèo, lên tiếng chỉ trích về hành động phá hoại môi trường của con người, tôi không thấy tác giả đưa ra một giải pháp cải thiện nào. Giới thiệu vấn đề nóng hổi và không chỉ của riêng ai này đến các trẻ nhỏ là một điều rất tốt, nhưng xong rồi ông chỉ để mặc đó :| Thông điệp về giáo dục chỉ có ý nghĩa thật sự khi người tác giả cho các em biết mình có thể làm gì, có thể giúp ích, đóng góp được gì để gìn giữ môi trường không bị ô nhiễm, đó mới là bài học thiết thực chứ không phải một đống lời quở mắng vô nghĩa lên sự thiếu trách nhiệm của con người. Thật tiếc, tôi không tìm thấy một chi tiết nào nói lên điều này, việc đó thật đáng thất vọng vì hình ảnh cái chết của cô hải âu Kengah là chi tiết đắt giá, đầy sinh động để cho đọc giả, các em nhỏ, THẤY và CẢM được sự nguy hại của ô nhiễm môi trường lớn đến nhường nào.

Dù không lôi cuốn và thu hút tôi lắm, nhưng đây là một quyển sách đáng đọc, có một số thông điệp mà tôi có thể thật sự "cảm" được, chẳng hạn như về lời hứa, về chữ tín mà tôi đã đề cập ở trên, nghị lực và lòng tin vào bản thân, tình yêu thương vô hạn, không biến giới chắc hẳn sẽ tạo ra phép nhiệm màu. Chính vì vậy, 3 sao là một kết quả xứng đáng.

Và tôi đã nói về nhưng bức tranh mình hoạ chưa nhỉ? Chúng quả là trên cả tuyệt vời! :D(less)

Tive a oportunidade de a ler devido a uma amiga, que numa das nossas conversas literárias, me explicou que era uma obra que merecia ser lida e relida, acabando por ma emprestar.

Nesta obra somos confrontados com a realidade de uma gaivota, que na sua viagem, tem a infelicidade de ficar presa num derrame de petróleo, sendo a custo que se dirige para o solo. Em terra encontra Zorbas, um gato preto e gordo, a quem faz prometer que irá tomar conta do seu ovo, assegurar o seu crescimento e ensinar a sua gaivotinha a voar. Zorbas juntamente com os seus amigos, bastante especiais, com características que os definem, irá enfrentar diferentes contratempos e algumas lições à medida que tenta cumprir o que prometeu.

Numa narrativa repleta de ternura, Luis Sepúlveda demonstra-nos as obrigações que uma promessa realizada pode acarretar, para quem se incute a realizá-la e a recompensa que a mesma possui quando a vemos concretizada. Mencionando ainda que, por vezes, para obtermos o que ambicionamos é necessário dar algo mais do que gostaríamos, que temos de ceder para podermos ir mais além. Nesta obra podemos constatar também uma mensagem sobre a aceitação da diferença, onde é ressalvado que ser diferente não é necessariamente mau, tornando os alvos da diferença, especiais. No caso desta gaivota, sentia-se que a mesma não gostava de ser diferente e que tentava ao máximo assemelhar-se aos gatos com quem cresceu, mas como Zorbas a faz compreender, ser diferente só a torna especial e com um lugar ainda maior no seu coração, pela sua singularidade. Outro dos pontos centrais da obra centra-se na degradação do meio ambiente por parte do homem, no que o mesmo prejudica por ser egoísta e por viver no agora, esquecendo-se que os actos de hoje, têm reflexos no amanhã.

Esta é uma história intemporal, que pelas suas mensagens e magia enfeitiça miúdos e graúdos. Uma narrativa que aborda o poder de uma promessa, a lealdade, a aceitação da diferença e o papel do homem na degradação do mundo em que vivemos.

Bella favola d’amore. La gabbianella è di una tenerezza che solamente i bambini riescono ad eguagliare. Molto importante per l’autore è l’appartenenza ad un gruppo, gli amici, le promesse. La solidarietà che avvicina e aiuta gli altri in difficoltà. L’importanza della natura e la sua salvaguardia. Per fortuna anche l’essere umano viene riscattato alla fine del racconto, dandoci una speranza per un futuro di armonia con la natura e tra noi umani!

This was a really cute little book about a baby seagull who is entrusted to a fat black cat by a dying mother seagull (oil spill)... The mama seagull makes the cat promise to (1) watch over the egg she has just hatched, (2) not eat the egg, and (3) teach the baby gull to fly when it's time.

It was super adorable how to fat cat (Zorba) consulted with his cat friends to figure out how to take care of the egg and baby gull... how they figured out that the seagull was a little girl bird and named her...more

Este é o primeiro livro que leio de Luís Sepúlveda, e quero mais!
É delicioso encontrar contadores de fábulas contemporâneos, com capacidade para criar livros transversais, apreciados tanto pelo público infanto-juvenil como por adultos.

This is a sweet story of a cat who promises a dying seagull that he will take care of her egg, care for the baby gull and teach it to fly. He is an honorable cat and keeps his word, along with the other cats of the port. Great tale of friendship. I loved Einstein and his encyclopedias. A quick read and a sweet story reminiscent of Charlotte's Web with anthropomorphic animals who solve a problem. I wish humans weren't always the "evil" ones in stories like this, but we are the ones who spill oil in the ocean so in this case we really are the guilty ones. This would be a nice book to recommend to students looking for an animal story and who are just ready for chapter books.

Gostei bastante. Ri-me imensas vezes, com o simples facto de serem 4 gatos.
4 gatos, que ajudaram esta gavoita. Caro amico, neste caso, Sepúlveda, estás de parabéns (não me tires os miados da boca). Já li um teu, este foi o segundo e estou pronta para comprar o 3º e todos os teus livros. Foi poético e ensinou-nos que todo é possível quando queremos. Esta review foi muito curta e mais poética... desculpem se vos desiludi.

In 1969, Sepúlveda was given a five-year scholarship to continue his drama studies at the Moscow University, but it was withdrawn after five months on account of 'misconduct' (he attended a party with a Politburo Officer's Wife, which was considered high ofense).

Luis Sepúlveda was politically active first as a leader of the student movement and in the Salvador Allende administration in the department of cultural affairs where he was in charge of a series of cheap editions of classics for the general public. He also acted as a mediator between the government and Chilean companies.
After the Chilean coup of 1973 which brought to power General Augusto Pinochet he was jailed for two-and-a-half years and then obtained a conditional release through the efforts of the German branch of Amnesty International and was kept under house arrest.

He managed to escape and went underground for nearly a year. With the help of a friend who was head of the Alliance française in Valparaíso he set up a drama group that became the first cultural focus of resistance. He was rearrested and given a life sentence (later reduced to twenty-eight years) for treason and subversion.

The German section of Amnesty International intervened again and his prison sentence was commuted to eight years of exile, and in 1977 he left Chile to fly to Sweden where he was supposed to teach Spanish literature. At the first stopover in Buenos Aires he escaped and managed to enter Uruguay. Because the political situations in both Argentina and Uruguay were similar to those in his home country, Sepúlveda went to São Paulo in Brazil and then to Paraguay. He had to leave again because of the local regime and finally settled in Quito in Ecuador guest of his friend Jorge Enrique Adoum. He directed the Alliance Française theatre, founded a theatrical company and took part in a UNESCO expedition to assess the impact of colonization on the Shuar Indians.

During the expedition he shared the life of the Shuars for seven months and came to an understanding of Latin America as a multicultural and multilingual continent where the Marxism-Leninism he was taught was not applicable to a rural population that was dependent on its surrounding natural environment. He worked in close contact with Indian organizations and drafted the first literacy teaching plan for the Imbabura peasants' federation, in the Andes.

In 1979 he joined the Simón Bolívar international brigade which was fighting in Nicaragua and after the victory of the revolution he started working as a journalist and one year later he left for Europe.

He went to Hamburg in Germany because of his admiration of German literature (he learned the language in prison) especially the romantics as Novalis and Friedrich Hölderlin and worked there as journalist traveling widely in Latin America and Africa.

In 1982 he came in contact with Greenpeace and worked until 1987 as a crewmember on one of their ships. He later acted as co-ordinator between various branches of the organization.
