This collection of ten J G Ballard pieces date from the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. They are a mix of genres: classic science fiction, gothic, surreal. All of them are in beautiful English and most of them tease by letting the reader discover the situation behind the story rather than spelling it out; some of them are very funny; many obsess on sex; and most are dystopian. The first story is not the best. Keep going.

Dying astronauts and empty swimming pools galore! Some of the best things JG Ballard has written in this short story collection. Some of the stories are typical Ballard (like the title story) whilst "The Smile" has more of an Angela Carter feel.

I didn't like everything in the collection, but overall a good read.

Ballard is always the master stylist, the type of writer, like Samuel Delany, that we don't see often these days. And it is a shame. More writers like these--and their stories--are needed in my opinion. Quirky, mysterious, ethereal, wonderful.

J.G. Ballard (James Graham Ballard) was born in 1930 in Shanghai, China where his father was a businessman. After the attack on Pearl Harbour, Ballard and his family were placed in a civilian prison camp. They returned to England in 1946. After two years at Cambridge, where he read medicine, Ballard worked as a copywriter and a Covent Garden porter before going to Canada with the RAF.
