WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO BE LUCKY'S LADY?

I first read Lucky’s Lady in 1994, during my late teens, and have re-read it several times over the years. Writing this review has spurred me to re-read it, my last re-read being about 8 years ago. It was such fun revisiting this "classic favourite" of mine.

For me, Lucky’s Lady is...more

Want to meet a Cajun bad boy and have a little fun in the bayou? Lucky Douchet lives in the Louisiana swamp he loves as he tries to recover mentally from his time as a captive in a South American jungle. He was captured while on a military mission and spent a year in captivity. He spends his time painting beautiful pictures of his swamp and chasing off poachers. When he was younger, he wanted to be an ecologist but he quit college to join the military after a bad relationship with Serena's twin...more

OMG!That's all I have to say. This book was amazing and took me on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. I loved Lucky and Serena, and ached for them and rooted for them.

Lucky's name isn't really apt since he isn't really lucky and doesn't consider himself to be. He was all set to be the first in his family to go to college when one girl used him and he joined the army. The scars of that and the army(he was sold out by his superior into captivity) have not yet healed, so he drinks too much, is obno...more

Loved it! The writing was exceptional. Excellent wordsmithing and I'm going to look for more books by this author. The romance in this romantic suspense was phenomenal. Serena Sheridan and Lucky Doucet made this book because the romance between them had me turning the pages--read it in one day. The entire book was set in Louisiana.

Lucky lived in the bayou and was a tortured hero. His strength and growth, tender moments, and how it all evolved rang my bells. Serena's character was kind and decen...more

Ms. Hoag grabbed my attention immediately. I felt like I was in the steamy and dangerous bayou. It is dark and mysterious, and full of secrets.

Serena comes home to her family plantation for a usual visit to find her elderly grandfather has taken off to live in the swamp. Her twin sister, who temporarily lives there at the house, does not seem to care at all. Quickly you learn what a shallow and terrible person her twin Shelby is.

Serena, terrified of the swamp, leaves immediately to tr...more

Oh I just loved this story so much, everything about it was just so good the romance, the deception, the setting , the back story of both Lucky and Serena. Plus I adored the way Lucky whispered romantic Cajun phrases to Serena. If you love a tortured hero who thinks he's beyond help but who desperatly needs to love someone then this is the book for you. But be prepared to get emotional and have some Kleenex handy:)

Wow, has it been a long time since I’ve read a book like this. Though first published in 1992, it took me back to the 80’s, when I first discovered Harlequin romances. Back then, romances adhered to a pretty strict formula, and this book followed it to the letter. The heroine is an uptight, prissy young woman who avoids dirt and bad boys, until she meets the rough-edged hero and just can’t resist his allure. Oh, she tries, judging him at the outset and giving him the sharp edge of her tongue, al...more

For those who may have read Tami's later works before this one (like me) would be slightly disappointed. The book is a romance novel built around strong, vibrant and somewhat terrifying landscape. It is well written and nice to read. Very entertaining. Though written in an extensively detailed manner, it kind of seemed to me, to be more in the style of a Mills and Boon. The educated, delicate lady from the city returning to her roots as she feels 'something is drawing her hinting at the hole in...more

I was very disappointed. I have read Tami Hoag's mysteries and been deeply enthralled in the past. Fortunately I read the author's note at the beginning so I could understand why this was more romance than mystery. It was nice to learn that the author started as a romance writer and crossed over to what I consider to be books of more substance, mystery, and this was her crossover book. Therefore, it was definitely more romance with mystery as the back drop. Also nice to note when I originally re...more

2 ½ stars. It’s ok if you don’t mind a downer feel to your romantic suspense. Personally I prefer uppers.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
My thoughts as I read this were: bad things happening to good people and what a mess. I wondered how it would work out, but it was not fun or exciting. Other romantic suspense novels pull me in more. This seemed like “ooh what a bad situation to walk into.” The hero is good at fighting bad guys, but instead of feeling good about it, I felt more like “ooh got out of that one...more

1- Lucky Doucet, Lucky Doucet and Lucky Doucet! Can I say it one more time? Would it make it anymore obvious that the guy totally invaded and took control of my heart, body and soul whilst I was reading this book and then some? Sigh! I don’t think I can adequately describe the way he took absolute control of the story since he walked into the picture. From his sinfully good looks to the edge of his tortured soul, I loved every bit of him and then some more and couldn’t help but sigh and...more

Pretty much your typical early-90's romance. I liked the plot of the story, even though it could be way too generic in places. Etienne "Lucky" Doucet (I love that name, so much) is, again, your typical romantic hero. Big, broad, and brooding. He has a difficult past and, of course, that has caused him to become reclusive and apt to hold everyone at arm's length or further. Basically, the warrior with the heart of gold. For some reason, though, some of his secrets – especially one that is rather...more

I read this book when it first came out, and I thought it was one of the best romantic suspense books I had ever read. Reading it again, I was a little disapointed. I didn't find it quite as good as I did years ago. I still enjoyed it, but I can't rate it the 5 that I would have originally.

This was the first Tami Hoag book I read. Fortunately I stuck with it or I would not have moved on to her far better works. I was passed an entire box of Hoag's work which I dutifully put into chronological order and began. I had no other material to hand, and so, when commenced my journey with Lucky and realised what I had had let myself in for I nearly gave up. I had not read such a bosom heaving, broad chest sanctuary for years and after the sickly, sappy, nausea had passed, I pressed on. (I...more

There was a sizzling attraction between psychologist Serena Sheriden and Lucky Doucet, a Cajun guide who was taking her through the bayou to her grandfather's fish camp. Her grandfather was being pressured by a chemical firm and Serena's twin sister to sell the historic family home on the edge of the Atchafalaya Swamp in Louisiana. The chemical firm would provide needed jobs to the area, but would further destroy the delicate ecological balance in the area. There were people who would use violen...more

I loved the setting and the suspense part of the story was well crafted. Some of the dialog was kind of hokey, though. I took this in stride, though as I did like the plot. Lucky was a definite alpha male, with the soft tortured side. I thought the arguing he and Serena did almost throughout the whole book, especially at the beginning was overdone and at times irritating. However, the progression of the softening towards one another was set at a realistic gradual pace based on actual events in t...more

Hoag refers to this as her "first bona fide romantic suspense novel." it's an easy read set in and around the swamps in South Louisiana... "from the exotic French Quarter to the most remote bayou." It was a little heavy on the romance for me. and too predictable. And the fact that I was re-reading this from years ago may have affected my rating. If you want a book where you don't have to think an awful lot mixed in with some hot and heavy passion and a mystery or two, this book is for you. men p...more

Second Tami Hoag book.. I like her description of the Louisiana Bayou and the whole Cajun south thing.. makes me want to go see if it's really like the way she describes.. so, the problem with this book was that this was apparently the first 'mystery' book she wrote after embarking away from the sexy romance novels.. so, there's no murder, but there's mystery mixed with heavy sexual and romance undertones.. not what I was expecting, so, eh.. it was an alright read.. again, I didn't see the end c...more

This one was more of a 3.5 star for me.

There is a lot that I loved about this book, but a few things that I didn't.

Lucky Doucet....he is something that I loved about this book! Lucky believes that he has nothing left to give. He is a down on his luck character who has been burned by love in the past. Serena is a prim and proper lady who is, on the surface, Lucky's polar opposite. As you get to know Serena's character, you see the passion and depth of spirit that lies below her icy exterior. What I liked about this book? The relationship between the sexy-as-sin, dangerous Cajun bad boy Lucky Doucet who thought he had nothing left to give a woman and the upscale, oh-so-proper yet wildly passionate Serena Sheridan. Loved the love/hate thing they had going for a while, loved the passion they couldn't control, I even loved the struggle that Serena went through to get Lucky to open up and share more than just his physical self. Loved the loves scenes (very hot), loved the Cajun love word...more

Finally a novel where the Louisiana bayou doesn’t get in the way and the author doesn’t use it as her soap box for environmental reform completely taking away from the real reason you’re reading the story: the romance! The bayou is creepy, eerie, scary and brimming with all sorts of hidden things. It’s so quiet and haunting blending perfectly with the hero Lucky Doucet. Lucky is one of those ex-military, a little bit off his rocker alphas. He’s all lip, whiplash fast retorts and in yer face with...more

I really liked both the hero and heroine of this story. Often either one of them gets on my nerves in a romance like this. It also had the added suspense regarding who was trying to get the family home and was involved in arson and kidnapping. I really felt for Lucky with his history with Shelby and in the prison he was in for a year. I could understand his wanting to be alone so nobody would bother him. This is about the brother of the hero of Restless Heart, but there was nothing else connecti...more

It is unfortunate that Tami Hoag is republishing older books. This 'bodice ripper' is not nearly as well written as later books, and the main male character, Lucky, is the model for the main character in 'Dark Paradise', one of my favorite Tami Hoag books.
I guess 'borrowing' from your own work is not plagiarism, but it does show a lack of imagination. Much of the dialogue is the same, and the overall progress of the relationship. Choose Dark Paradise before this book!

As an update of an older work, the plot is well writtrn and the chacaters are well defined. Serena comes home for a vacation and finds the old plantation in an uproar. The evil oil man wants to raze the place and put up a plant that will destroy the enviorment and the beloved swamp. Serena meets up with Lucky in her attempt to drag grandpa out of the swamp and find out what is going on. Lucky is a troubled soul with deep, really deep, problems. Serens falls in love anyway.

UPDATE: Jan. 3, 2013 - Just read this book AGAIN for the 7th time and I swear it gets better and better each time. I love Lucky! He's just so damn yummy ;)

Dec.11-12, 2011 - This book is just fantastic! This is my 6th time reading it and its my "go to" book. Whenever I feel the need to read something familiar and/or clear my pallet from the last series I've read, I pick up one of four books, usually this one. I just love this story and never get tired of it. Serena is the perfect southern belle w...more

Found among my late brother's books. Can't imagine him reading it... Mostly romance, lots of sex, not my type of book at all. I was fooled by thinking that Hoag wrote suspense, but this was apparently her transition book and far too close to series (formula) romance novels where two characters who instantly hate each other on meeting fight their chemical attraction, yada, yada, yada. Made me want to smack both of 'em upside the head.

I liked this one - it had some elements I didn't see coming and some that I kind of found predictable but the whole was very entertaining and suspenseful. Hoag really evoked what the bayou is like both its beauty and its creepiness. She also was able to create two characters who were somewhat unlikable on the surface (Serena was prissy and kind of a know it all and Lucky was the caveman, chauvinistic type) but who I came to like very quickly.
