Frantic about how long it took me to read this, especially considering how much it drew me in. I so wanted to just keep reading. Marc is a fully realised character with flaws and failings, but with so many many great features too. The narrative brings in death & grief, total focus & commitment as well as friendship, love and most of all, a wry, dry wit. Loved it!
2010 teen novel nominated for Book of the year. A bit well-meaning, but otherwise ok. Jarvis (who plays no. 24 on the school footy team), does his work experience at at used car yard. He gets to meet a range of new people as part of his job, including a gay artist, a man dying of cancer and a lesbian couple. And he finds his first girlfriend. Bit ho-hum.
I quite enjoyed this book. It was about an average boy and begins as he loooks for work experience. He works at a car yard and forms these new and interesting friendships. It also lead him to meeting this girl called Electra, a funner who he falls in love with. The book is very emotion at times and is written well. I thought the start was a bit slow but I wanted to keep reading to find out more. The only thing that annoyed me was that I wish they talk more about what happened to this mystery gir...more
I've read 4 of Metzenthen's earlier books which were well written but didn't necessarily resonate. Jarvis 24 though - was so brilliant.
I felt so good while I was reading it. The characterisation was so good that I spent half the book being in awe and the other half grinning away at the Aussieness of Jarvis and his mates.
One of the best male POV's I've ever read (similar to Swerve by Phillip Gwyne). I think both those books have ruined other less superior male POV for me - as the standard has no...more

good
This book caught my attention because it was set in Melbourne, Australia. I read it simply because I wanted to see what the authors perspective on Melbourne was. I was surprised that the book was really quite deep and had some interesting problems. I really enjoyed this book as I found it much easier to relate to than say a book set in America. Even though I am used to reading books with settings in America and England it was nice to read a story set in my city.
