This collection consists of 5 stories by the YA authors out of which I am familiar with 3 - I admire Kelley Armstrong, I am fairly disappointed in Richelle Mead, vowed not to read Alyson Noel again - never read anything by Kristin Cast and Francesca Lia Block. First I thought to only read Mead's and Armstrong's stories, but then decided to give 3 other writers a chance, out of the goodness of my heart and because the book is fairly short. Well, I shouldn't have bothered.

Ok, I only read two stories in this book. The Richelle Mead story - which is a Vampire Academy story about how Lissa's parents met - was good and interesting and now makes me want to read the books again! I'm pretty sure that the other characters in this story are also the parents of VA characters, and I need to figure out who is who! The story seems to shed some light on part of Lissa's story that is revealed at the end of Spirit Bound.

This book is five stories by five authors. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others in this "series". Alyson Noel's story saved it for me. Kelley Armstrong's was also good.

I was so interested in reading anything Mead puts out that's set in the VA world. Although this short story lacks the kickass heroine that is Rose, I found that I really liked Rhea. She's an outcast and it's clear from the very beginning, but she is very sure of herself and that is very endearing. Speaking of which, Eric is irresistable. It's no wonder girls love him.

One Star.

I didn't like Rhea. She was so incredibly insecure and bitchy. There was no way anyone could not talk to her without walking on egg shells. Don't call her on it though, that just makes her talk down to you like you're a piece of shit.
And what the hell..? Why was this about vampires? A human suffering from blood loss could take take them out. Why did Rhea have a fire ability when she didn't ever use it? Not even to defend herself?

I was horribly disappointed in this anthology. Though the stories were all Okay, I was expecting some more variety from the collection. In the other anthologies related to this particular book, there were curses, ghosts, demons, among other types of creatures along with a touch of human insanity. In this book, everyone but Cast wrote about vampires, and no one really knows what she was writing about.

I’m going to break down each story with stars and a very brief reason as to why gave them that star grade.

Sunshine Richelle Mead 1 star
I am not saying that because I gave this story a single star that is a bad story. I think personally that because I’m unfamiliar with the Vampire Academy book series I found the story a bit dull, rushed, and I was unable to connect with any of the characters. I found myself not really interested in how it was going to end.

this book of short stories was not bad at all...i actually liked most of the stories in it.

1. sunshine by richelle mead (4 stars). reading this story, one experienced i had was nostalgia. it's like i'm back and reading the vampire academy series again. since i totally adored the series, it was not hard for me to like this one. reading the dragomir surname again...wow memories! i really liked this one.

"Kisses from Hell" starts with "Sunshine", written by Richelle Mead. The story is part of the universe Mead has created in the "Vampire Academy - series", and focuses on the romance between Eric and Rhea Dragomir, Lissa's parents. The story is well written, but for me it was a bit boring. I never got into it, and my mind kept dwelling on other things than the story I was reading. I suspect that I would have gotten more out of the story if I had read the Vampire Academy - series prior to it, and...more "Kisses from Hell" starts with "Sunshine", written by Richelle Mead. The story is part of the universe Mead has created in the "Vampire Academy - series", and focuses on the romance between Eric and Rhea Dragomir, Lissa's parents. The story is well written, but for me it was a bit boring. I never got into it, and my mind kept dwelling on other things than the story I was reading. I suspect that I would have gotten more out of the story if I had read the Vampire Academy - series prior to it, and I will try to read the story again, when I have done that.

The next story is "Bring me to Life" by Alyson Noël. Danika, an American girl, is attending Sunderland Manor Art Academy in England, but the school is not quite what she expects. I am a big fan of Noël's writing and she didn't dissappoint me with "Bring me to Life" either. I loved the story and the atmosphere she creates in it. It is obvious that she is inspired by "Dracula" and "Wuthering Heights", two of my favorite novels. You have characters with names such as Bram and Earnshaw. I read this story late at night when the rain was pooring down outside, and that just added to the atmosphere in the story. I wish "Bring me to Life" was a whole novel, and not just a short story. I would really like to get to know Danika better.

"Above" is the name of Kristin Cast's story, and I have only one word for it: OMG! The story simply blew me away. It is dark, disturbing, bizarre, suspenseful, mysterious and depressing. But also poetic with some glimmers of light and hope. It reads like a poem, and you have to read between the lines to really understand what's going on. I have read the first book in the House of Night - series, but this was nothing like that. This story was spectacular. I want more. The best short story in this book and a story you either love or hate, I suppose.

Kelley Armstrong has written "Hunting Kat", about Katiana from the Darkest Powers series. I read this story while trying to decide if I should put the book away or not. I have the Darkest Powers - series on my shelf, but I have not read it yet and I am afraid this novel had some spoilers. Again, I think this is a read that is best suited for those who know Katiana's story from other books.

"Lilith" by Francesca Lia Block is the last story in the book. A dark tale about Paul Michael, who do not fit in at school and escapes into an imaginary world. One day, a new girl attends school. Her name is Lilith. This was a cute, and at the same time, dark story. I thought it was a bit short, even for a short story. I wanted to read more about Paul Michael and Lilith, and get to know them better. I didn't feel I got under their skin, so to speak.

I have mixed emotions about "Kisses from Hell". I loved two of the stories, but the others didn't appeal to me, but again I think that is because I do not know the series they are part of. I also would have liked the publisher to state that, for example, "Hunting Kat", is based upon another series by Kelley Armstrong so I could have avoided spoilers.

If the anthology only contained the stories by Noël and Cast, it would have gotten full score. But since I only liked two out of three stories, I am giving it 3.

"Sunshine" by Richelle Mead - Set in Mead's Vampire Academy universe, this story explores how Lissa's parents met and fell in love, and it succeeds in providing a great backstory for that series. "Sunshine" was cute and showed good character development, but it wasn't overwhelming. 3/5

"Bring Me to Life" by Alyson Noël - In this story, Noël presents a modern twist on the Dracula myth involving an eerie fog, an old English manor, and a cute artsy boy. Though okay, "Bring Me to Life" wasn't very engaging or original with its use of obvious and cliché plot clues throughout. 2/5

"Above" by Kristin Cast - In "Above," Cast attempts to create a complex new paranormal mythology about creatures who live below the surface of the earth and their enemies who live above. Even with its two sympathetic main characters, this story fell extremely short due to its confusing and unclear world building that seemed like an attempt to be avant garde or edgy. 1/5

"Hunting Kat" by Kelley Armstrong - Set in Armstrong's world that appears in her Darkest Powers series, "Hunting Kat" introduces a feisty young vampire named Kat who is being pursued by the Edison Group. In the process, she meets two boys, either of whom may be with her or against her. "Hunting Kat" was fast-paced and interesting with a strong, likeable female protagonist and a likeable male lead. I really enjoyed this story and would love to see a longer novella or book based on these characters. 4/5

"Lilith" by Francesca Lia Block - In this story, Block puts a vampiric twist on the original bad girl of the Bible, Lilith. This story had the potential to be very original, but it seemed out of place in this collection with its very dark tone and lack of any real romance. 2/5

While I enjoy short story anthologies and the opportunity they present to sample multiple authors, KISSES FROM HELL left me disappointed. Outside of those by Mead and Armstrong, the stories weren't very interesting or well-written. In addition, the huge font size and the chapter breaks used within individual stories felt like an attempt to hide the overall short length of the book. Despite its title and description, most of the stories also contained very little romance or kissing. If you're willing to branch out into other paranormal creatures in search of a good short story anthology, I would heartily recommend KISS ME DEADLY: 13 TALES OF PARANORMAL LOVE or LOVE IS HELL instead.(less)

Read the first story so far, the one by Richelle Mead, and it was alright - the vampire mythology there seems to be the standard trend that's evolving these days - teenage vampires that can walk around during the day. Basically, just another teen love story. BRING ME TO LIFE......the fact that its written by one of my favorite authors plays a big role on why i liked it so much.Dani was extatic to be attending an art academy ,both because of her art and the idiot people around her that are intent on hurting her.but when she gets there things are not what they seem, why is there no classrooms,teachers are other students and why is there a huge painting of her in the halway dating back to 1869? i enjoyed this ,the romance was minimal and the mystery was at its peak,what i didnt like was the confusion ,new charachters out of the blue! I found some of the stories to be quite entertaining, namely those by Richelle Mead, and Francesca Lia Block - authors whom I have read previous books from before and loved. In "Sunshine" by Richelle Mead we get a look a very sweet, very cute little story. I enjoyed this one. Especially since I was having VA withdrawal. If you're a fan of the Vamp Academy series, then this short story is a must! ~ 4 STARS

"Sunshine" by Richelle Mead: (4) It's a really nice short story, it helped bump the Vampire Academy books on my TBR list!

"Bring Me to Life" by Alyson Noël: (1) First there's a moment where I mentally struggle to remember what this one was about... and when I do I wish I hadn't. The first chapters drag too much, until the final one dumps a plot which wasn't original or well constructed.

Let me start by saying that I love reading books but I do't enjoy starting a book. I never know how long it will take me to get into a particular story. But I thought I would give one of these books a try. The first story by Richelle Mead was o.k. Knowing from the Vampire Academy series that Eric had an affair on his wife didn't help me enjoy their love story much.
