An insidiously blood-chilling but highly literate novel that bravely takes the path less travelled by...and it makes all the difference between “run of the mill” and truly special. This one stamped itself on my memory.

From a plot perspective, this is a fairly typical “random traffic encounter leads to sadistic psycho abducting heroine leading to a trauma-fest and life-changing survival-story” story, as exemplified by this gut-clencher from Mr. Mean Man:

Shelves: feb-list, thriller, horror

A taunt, gripping, visceral story of survival of the most degrading kind for a human. The story is written well and a real page-turning cycle of struggle for a human soul. This is my first read from this author and he can really write and place you into the thick of it he can knock the socks of alot of the so-called best reads out there. I am going to check out his short stories and Jason is one to watch as his novels hit more audiences.(adult content in the story)

Jason C. McIntyre's, On The Gathering Storm, is a story in which the reader quickly becomes privy to what can happen when our wildest nightmares come to life. Suspense novels can sometimes seem contrived, with authors trying too hard to rattle our cages and throw us off balance. Hannah Garrity has a precognitive ability that reminds me of the plot in Tom Cruise's Minority Report. Nothing good ever seems to come of possessing this ability.

In Hannah's case, it leads her into a dangerous situation when she tries to help a young girl she believes is in trouble. Graphic language describes a prolonged ordeal, peppered with many flashbacks of Hannah's life.

I found this story to have all the elements of a fabulous read.
The characters are believable, and real. Scary Real!
The Story could happen to anyone, and has happened to many unfortunate women (and yes sometimes men) It is a story of survival,of finding inner strength and courage when all seems lost…McIntyre’s ability to make you feel every nuance of the story is uncanny and I’m sure someday soon will be legendary. Well it is definetely not hard to see why this novel has garnered such great reviews on here. With so many real life stories of situations very similar to the novel coming out in the last decade, it lends a much more real and sinister air to the book because this could happen to anyone.

“On the Gathering Storm” is a gritty tale of survival for our heroine Hannah, who walks a fine line between sanity and insanity throughout. While the main portion of the narrative is a survival and captivity tale, we sink deep into Hannah’s mind and memories as she explores her past life and her development. It’s a dark and somewhat empowering story to read about Hannah, who may outwardly seem like the victim, but is inwardly a champion. It also says something about the victimization of women; challenging the assumption that they don’t have strength to overcome, to protect themselves. This book is violent, but challenging. It never feels like violence for the sake of it, which I think makes the harder parts more palatable. The nail-biting parts are still rough. I have two ulcers now, one named “Dexter” and one named “On the Gathering Storm”.

McIntyre, from a snooty-writerly-standpoint, has incredible style. His dark voice doesn’t just end when it’s convenient; he takes us on an inner journey with Hannah because it’s truthful to how her brain works. It’s as distinct and raw of a writer as I’ve read in a long time. It’s so easy for major label editors to take a writer’s voice and dice it into tidy bestseller blandness. It’s the same kind of “fancy” tone that litters the “New Yorker”, making everyone sound like the same writer. McIntyre isn’t afraid to “inconvenience” his readers with style, which makes the book stand out, and impressed me a ton.

A must read, but not for the faint of heart.(less)

Shame I missed it as a freebie but for £2.15 I'm not complaining as it was a great read.

Very atmospheric and scary, suspense thriller.

I had to keep reminding myself that this was a male author as I really felt the characters of Hannah and Dirty Hair Girl during their horrific ordeal were truly believable. I didn't think a man could write with such empathy about this kind of subject nor be believable.

I will certainly read more from this author.

Given my recent slacker attitude toward the books I buy, that alone is indicitive of the excellent writing by Jason McIntyre. I think what I specifically enjoyed was the book's pacing; I have read other reviews describing the story as a "slow burn," or something like it. Though I understand what they mean in terms of plot revelation, I felt more like I was eating a Thanksgiving meal while reading; I just kept trying to stuff in the bites so tha...more I read this book during the course of only one day. Given my recent slacker attitude toward the books I buy, that alone is indicitive of the excellent writing by Jason McIntyre. I think what I specifically enjoyed was the book's pacing; I have read other reviews describing the story as a "slow burn," or something like it. Though I understand what they mean in terms of plot revelation, I felt more like I was eating a Thanksgiving meal while reading; I just kept trying to stuff in the bites so that I could get to the next delicious morsel. There is something about the writing - the tense?, the pace?, the detail? - that grabs hold of you and never lets go. Thus, I stayed up waaaaay too late in order to finish Hannah's story. I certainly couldn't leave her alone in that skanky trailer.

There are three things that prevented me from giving this books five stars. First, on the pages after Hannah leaves the trailer and before the...epilogue, I guess... I truly have no idea what happened. There was something about an elevator and her brother's apartment...but I think this may have been a writing device. Hannah's not really in her right mind during this section of the book, and if the writer's intent is to make the reader feel as muddled and confused as Hannah, well then that works well. If that's not the intent, I remain confused. That section had a dreamlike quality. I should say that I read it at two in the morning - very quickly - so I wasn't exactly in my right mind either. :)

Second, in the epilogue, Candace is revealed to be carrying a child. Presumably, this child's father is the girls' captor. However, the author makes a point of saying that the man who held them captive never engages in sexual activity with the girls himself. I was fuzzy on the details there...

Finally, I felt the ending to be a bit rushed. I thought it was a good ending, and well written, but I wish it had taken a slightly longer portion of the book. I had a lot invested in the characters of Hannah and Tannis, and was interested in the details of their relationship and life together, not just the summary of it. And I was so sad to learn that Hannah died so early. Obviously, that's just preference and isn't a commentary on the story or writing. It just seemed like a lot to go through for Hannah...she was such a strong character, becoming ever stronger, and I wish she'd had a full life to live.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this story. It's one that will stay with me for awhile, and I will definitely read more by Jason McIntyre! (less)

Horrific, intense, magnetic!

'On the Gathering Storm' is an all-too-real tale of terror, abduction, and one woman's will to survive. Jason Mcintyre's portrayal of Hannah Garretty is so compelling, that it's impossible to stop reading her story, even as the horrific scenes made me wish I'd never opened the book. Hannah becomes a real person, not just a character in a novel, and it's this facet of Mcintyre's craftsmanship that kept me turning the pages.

Since I live in the Pacific Northwest, I am familiar with the setting (Canada) that is described. I could easily visualize each place and because of this, it made the terror even more real. Hints of the paranormal coming in the form of flash visions are introduced in the beginning. The insertion will be easy for even the most skeptical to accept because the character development and overall story is cemented in the now. Parts of the story are delivered in a series of flashbacks. I found myself deeply committed to these parts of the writing and felt the author squeezed all the use from penning the important scenes. Often, this technique can be flawed, but not in this graphic tale. I felt the flashback was actually a strength in the over all telling. A note: The story includes sexual detailing, violence and sexual violence related to a kidnapping that might be disturbing to some readers.

I’m a big fan of the simile, but this story was packed with them. I was pleased they were original and did not lead to cliches. However, in my humble opinion it was a touch over done. The scene involving Hannah at her brother’s apartment loses it’s footing and touch with reality. Up until then, I was on board with the flashes and paranormal visions. Also, the bad events that take place there are a bit hard to digest. At one point, I was thinking this is going to end up being just a ‘dream’ kind of book because this is too fantastical. Lastly, the epilogue threw me for a jerky loop. Epilogues used as a lead to a series or teaser are widely popular and I admit, I use them in my own stories. However, I detest epilogues used as a summary device. I don’t want a sudden ‘by the way’ this is what happens to the characters (players) the next day, week or year. It feels insincere and frankly, rushed. I just spent three days of horror with this character and now I’m getting the rest of her life summed up in a few pages? I know some people dearly want to know, ‘then what happened,’ but I’m not that reader.

Back to the topic: self- published full length novels. I have decided to use today as that day. We have Graphic Novel Friday and Digital Short Saturday already and thought this would be a natural progression. Gelati’s Scoop has and will continue to feature and promote the author that has chosen a non- traditional path to showcase his or her work. We have featured the work of authors that have done this on many different platforms and are very proud of that. I read On The Gathering Storm on my laptop, but have used an ereader, my sons iPhone… it’s nuts and fun; I love it. Keep it coming. Needless to say, Sunday I think is going to be a fun day. Now to our novel!!
Jason McIntyre’s novels and digital shorts have been fun for me to read as he is a bit of a different flav for me. Some of you I know groove on this type of stuff, but for me it is a bit of stretch. The thing about his writing, as I have totally digested almost all his work to date, is that he is willing to extend himself and put it out there. I enjoy the spirit he places in the novels, his spirit, and it seems to hit the right buttons. The reason that I stress that point is that he has done this work himself. There is no team molding his work with others’ ideas or focus groups, literary agents or anyone else to come between his words, his ideas and feelings and us the reader. That for me is what makes his plotlines and prose so riveting and engrossing. The twists, turns, action and suspense are gravy or icing on the cake.
On The Gathering Storm was a mind bender and a very intense experience for me. McIntyre took me into places in my head I was not expecting to go and I guess when I was done, besides consuming some antacid tablets and migraine medicine I was better for the experience. I say that in all honesty and in a positive way. This guy is giving away some of his hard work on Smashwords in hopes that you will enjoy it and pick up his full length stuff, like Storm. On Gathering Storm was quite the unexpected ride. I didn't expect to be so drawn into the story the way I was. Hooking, haunting, and addicting.

The author has a very distinct style that's refreshing and worked well with the story. He has a talent with putting us in Hannah's head, feeling and experiencing the horror through her eyes. I was completely immersed to the point that I felt everything Hannah felt, both the physical and emotional.

Good first novel by Jason, who I met in the blog world, and picked up his work at Smashwords. I liked the setting, and the Sisterhood storytelling that we went after. Coming from a guy, that takes balls...eh...yeah.

My reservation about the book is that it is narrated in the present tense. Perhaps it is just me, but I found this to be really cumbersome, as if my mind just couldn't get moving with it. I think it would be a much stronger work if the tense was changed. That may be a stupid comment,...more

Jason McIntyre's novel, On The Gathering Storm, is best described as crazy beautiful. The plot took me to a place I wasn't expecting and stayed with me long after I was done reading. What really surprised me was McIntyre's writing. His ability to write from a woman's POV, accurately and realistically, with richness and detail, was astounding. I love dark books, generally the more uncomfortable and unsettling the better - and On The Gathering Storm was there in spades. The story crept on me slowly, it was haunting, riveting - and (this is just a particular thing with me) I am always in awe of men who can write so seamlessly from a woman's perspective (and vice versa.)

A Five Star Riveting and Challenging Read

Jason McIntyre has written this chilling tale giving readers a vivid picture with explicit detail. Hannah Garretty is a stunning and beautiful girl with a great job, great friends and with a great talent for photography. Yet, she has a harrowing past with many demons. Brutal. Disturbing. Engaging. Gripping. Moving. This book kept me up all night. First, because I had to finish it. Then because I couldn't shake it off.

Jason McIntyre doesn't tell a story. He steps out of the way and allows his characters to bring you into their world. Use caution when reading this one, however, as the characters might not allow you back out.

I had high expectations for this book, but it fell flat for me. Normally I appreciate how an author builds up a character by giving background on his/her life, but this book annoyed me by flashing back to the past too often and didn't dwell on the present enough. Unlike, say, Gonzalez's Survivor, I didn't get a feel for the terrifying things happening to the victim, and I didn't feel the anxiousness about her kidnapped situation as I've felt in books with a similar plot. I found this story entertaining and suspenseful, but very dark. I found it very disturbing what happened to Hannah, especially being detailed by a male author. The ending caught me by surprise, as it was not the usual happily ever after. I am interested to read more books by Jason McIntyre to understand what traits are carried into his future books.

I purchased this book to read on my Kindle because the proceeds would be going to a charity for abused women and children. It was a quick read. I can't make up my mind how I feel about this book. Sometimes I was enthralled with it and sometimes found it boring. I may come back and edit this review after I've thought about it some more. I do have to say the author described Hannah's menstrual cramps quite accurately. I felt them along with her!

This book is Horror at it's best!! Jason Mcintyre is a writer in his own league, His stories are visceral, heart-wrenching, and realistic. This is a scenario that could be playing out right now anywhere around the world. It really makes you think while also making you remember to lock the house up tight and read with the lights on!!!
