I felt this book had some very unique illustrations. The illustrations showed step-by-step instructions on how to actually make the pizza. It included concepts of how we can include healthy foods to put on pizza including, mushrooms and tomatoes.

This is a classic story but told with making pizza. Students will be able to relate to the story because it has pizza and most children like pizza. My kindergarten teacher read this book then had the students go to the cafeteria and make pizzas. They got to eat the pizza during snack time. The students loved it. I would have had the student write or draw a reflection on their pizza baking experience. I would have took pictures of them baking and eating it to go along with their story.

The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza) by Philemon Sturges, illustrated by Amy Walrod follows the Little Red Hen as she spies a can of tomato sauce in her cupboard and decides to make a pizza. The hen, with no help from her friends the duck, the dog, and the cat, goes through the steps of making a pizza - shopping for supplies, making the dough, adding the toppings and baking.

A new take on an old story, with the same opening premise, but a different story. This time the Little Red Hen asks for help in all the steps to make a pizza. The story goes mostly as expected, except for all those crazy trips to the store (why couldn't she plan ahead?), and a new twist at the end. Great fun when you have already read the original Little Red Hen version.

A slightly kinder and much funnier version compared to the original. I absolutely love the pictures done in cut paper collage (a lot like Lois Ehlert often does), and the silly bits of humor in them (the duck wears a swim cap and a flotation ring?!). I can't decide whether the hen has a problem with shopping (as she comes home from each store with 'some other stuff), or if the author is just acknowledging that, as long as you're out, you should stock up on other stuff you're going to need soon...more
This book is a retelling of the Little Red Hen Story, in which the Little Red Hen makes a pizza. It's a little lacking in the description of how the Little Red Hen actually MAKES the pizza ("she puts the flour and some other stuff in a bowl"--how hard is it to say "she puts the flour, yeast, water, and salt in a bowl??") But where the story is a little simplistic and derivative (but nonetheless a good story--a classic, obviously), the illustrations are top-notch. Each page ...more
This is a story about a Little Red Hen who is trying to make a pizza. She realizes she does not have the ingredients or utensils necessary to make one so she asks her friends. Every time she asks her friends for help they say "NO!". This book goes through all the utensils and food needed to make a pizza. The Hen makes the pizza step-by-step, which could be used in a sequencing lesson. At the end, the Little Red Hen offers the pizza to her friends and asks if they want to help clean up ...more

A children picture book with many good elements in it. I teaches the importance of being prepared before doing something it also teaches children the importance of sharing. It is very systematical in the sense that it conveys the process of making a pizza in a systematical way. He listed all the things used to make the picture although I have to say that the spacing in the illustration was not the best in my opinion it is a bit cluttered. The illustration where also not very bright in fact the i...more

In this retelling of an old tale, the little red hen wants to make pizza. She finds that she is missing many ingredients and instruments needed to make the pizza. When inquiries are made into the neighborhood of who will help her acquire the necessary implements, no one will. So she does it herself. Of course, when it comes time to eat the pizza, they are all more than willing to take advantage of her offer. However they make amends for past wrongs when they do the dishes for the little hen.

I love this book! It is about a hen trying to get help from her friends to make a pizza and they refuse to help her. In the end they helped her because they learned a lesson.
The illustrations are very colorful and attractive. This story can be used to teach children about giving a helping hand and being prepared.
The repetition can be used to help in children's comprehension as well as getting them to actively participate in the read aloud session.

The story is about a red hen who wants to make pizza and goes through major preparations to make one. She asks her friends to help her, but they don’t because no one likes to work. When she finishes making the pizza, they all came to eat very quickly. I can say that I enjoyed reading this book, I think the illustrations are not suited for this kind of book.

The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza) is very appealing to students at the elementary level. The pictures are vivid and lively. This book could be used to tie in pizza making, pizza fractions, sequencing, and even more. Also, The Little Red Hen could be read to tie in the concept of the story and is also great for reader's theaters!
An interesting spin on the original story. The silly hen forgets alot of ingredients and has to make multiple trips to the store. She eventually gets her pizza made without anyones help. We all know how the story goes but this version might surprise you!
A very good lesson is taught in this story, and it is an excellent book to get the students engaged! It also teaches students about ingredients and cooking products around the house (familiarize them with environmental print).
Good for a mixed crowd story time. Readers might be familiar with the little red hen who baked a delicious cake however this time she's in the mood for a little 'za. Cute clever but a bit long for really young ones.
Couldn't resist adding this to my shelf. Sage and I picked this up at the library. She's been on a real cooking kick and we both think this book rocks. Great paper cut collage illustrations.
I (and some of the preschool teachers) can relate to coming home from shopping with "some other stuff". Great for food-themed storytime. I love the detailed paper illustrations!
A fun story about the Little Red Hen who makes an entire pizza by scratch without any help from her friends. I really enjoyed this story that can be used to teach children the true meaning of friendship.
I simply loved reading this book! I think it will be an excellent book for a read aloud. It can also be used in the classroom to teach about friendship and being helpful to others.

sequencing - give students pictures of main idea of each part of book; pizza pan, shopping cart, dough, pizza with ingredients, slice of pizza with bite taken out. Have students tape into bottom of pizza box. On top inside of box, students can tape a RETELLING of story or do a SELF-TO-TEXT and draw a picture of what their pizza-of-choice would look like.
Predict if the hen will share his pizza with his friends in the end

I would use this book in my classroom as another book for a fairytale. I would also talk about the right thing to do instead to saying no, I won't help.
Students will love this new twist to the well-known The Little Red Hen. A great book for compare and contrast among the original and new Little Red Hen.

Great explanation of doing things you love and sharing them with others. Even if they seem reluctant at first they may enjoy the gesture and return the favor.
I used this book as for a shared reading lesson. The children were able to use a lot of connections with the book. We talked about what we would like on our own homemade pizza.
This is a great contemporary story of the Little Red Hen. This story is about sharing work and responsibilities in order to have things you want.
Same take as the original "little red hen," teaches students about fairness and teamwork and the consequences that come from not working together.
