Lament>noun 1. a passionate expression of grief. 2. a song, piece of music, or poem expressing grief or regret.

I pre-ordered Lament when I first heard about it a couple months ago. You can imagine my surprise when I received an email confirmation that the book was on the way a little less than a month early!! Needless to say when it showed up on my doorstep Friday, I did a little happy dance right there in front of my neighbors.

And The Story Siren even got a shout out More...

I adore and admire Maggie Stiefvater's writing. I think I post this in almost every review of her books, but the way she uses words inspires me to improve my own writing. By now, my blatant bias for her work should be apparent. Despite Lament's shortcomings when compared to her series starting with Shiver, I still enjoyed it.

Deirdre Monaghan is the average above-average sixteen-year-old. A gifted musician, she goes through the everyday notions of practicing for performances and satis More...

As a lover of fairy tales, I’m always on the hunt for a new find in the genre. Some can be major disappointments, but there are some, that if done well, shine, Lament is the later.

I have to admit, I was skeptical about reading this book. Could anything sound more corny than a harpist? I didn’t even know that you could find one below the age of 65, much less 16 and I wasn’t sure how a new author would be able to believably portray two mythological figures (fairies and harpists). At first glance, this may seem like just another teen paranormal romance book in the faerie sub-category. For that reason, it took me weeks after I checked out the book to actually read it. But I must confess...once I got started, I was hooked. The plot was extremely interesting, the twists on traditional faerie-lore quite well planned, and the romance was enjoyable.

I can see where people are coming from comparing Luke to Edward Cullen, but...well...I didn't like Twilight, and I D More...

After putting down this book, the first thing I thought was: Man, that was incredible. The second thing I thought was: WHY MUST THE SEQUEL COME OUT NEXT YEAR AND NOT RIGHT NOW? And yes, I thought this in all capital letters. But Lament itself is an incredible book. The writing is excellent ( though I saw a few things I'd change and, like, two typos overall, but that's me being way too critical ). The characters are amazing - I was so used to reading about heroines who play dumb or have no idea a More...

A new voice in urban fantasy has entered the scene. In the tradition of Melissa Marr and Holly Black, Stiefvater has created a world filled with the strangeness of faerie, strafed by their cruelty and endangered by their attention. Deirdre is a gifted musician who plays the harp and sings, but she gets horrible stage fright. While throwing up before a competition, she is helped by a boy from her dreams, Luke Dillon. Luke performs with Deirdre, together creating incredible music and winning t More...

This doesn't compare to Maggie's Wolves of Mercy Falls series but I still loved it!

I loved Luke and Deidree (Can't remember if the spelling is right), they were so cute. I loved their romance and how they fell for one another. I'm not usually a fairy book person but I definately liked this one.

I loved the plot, it was simple and easy to follow. I loved the awesome abilities Dee gets. That would be cool as. James her bestfriend is also really cool, although I must confess More...

Lament by Maggie Stiefvater is a mystical magical tale of the world of Faerie that is sure to delight even the most unbelieving reader. This is a tale woven so beautifully that it flows like water through your fingers. A tale that is sure to entertain all ages and a great summer read for your teen/young adult.

Deirdre Monaghan is a normal teenage girl but with musical talent that is well beyond her years. A musical gift that comes so naturally that it could even make the angels weep. More...

Deirdre meets Luke at an audition one day. They play some amazing music together, and by the end of the day, Deirdre is more than a little infatuated. But Luke isn't the only stranger appearing in her life. All kinds of weird people and events start surrounding her, and it's obvious that Luke has something to do with it.

First of all, can I just say that I don't read all that much YA, but I am sick to death of the inevitable love triangle. Sick of it! Lament was a little more low More...

I decided to pick up Lament because I am a big fan of Ms. Stiefvater's, Shiver. Not only did Lament blow me away, but it is one of the best faerie books I have had the pleasure to read.

Deirdre (a/k/a Dee) and Luke are just to die for. Although you are not really sure whether you can trust Luke for most of the story, you can't help but to yearn for him and Dee to find a way to make it work out - no matter how much her grandmother warns her away from him. I thought Deirdre was the perf More...

So it turns out that I have already read this book before. Oh well, this is why I joined this site. There's just too many books to keep track of!

Anyways, I thought for a YA book it was pretty good. The heroine is generally likeable and the plot was pretty interesting. It's about a young girl named Deidre who's gifted at music but awkward socially. At a music recital she meets Luke. A mysterious boy whom Deidre feels drawn too. Soon afterwards she starts finding four-leaf clovers ever More...

So I needed something sweet and scary, with a little humor and some faeries. I didn't really know much about LAMENT, so it was kind of surprising how much I was looking forward to it. But I was just getting this vibe. Like good things would be inside. And these good things seemed to carry with them a hint of Melissa Marr goodness mixed with some Holly Black awesome. I got what I was looking for and more.

In a year that I thought was going to herald the crash of the fantasy bubble, I've been blown away by some of the most wonderful fantasy novels of my reading life. I think all three of the titles are being published in October so put them on your to order list. In addition to Impossible by Werlin and Graceling by Cashore, Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception the debut novel by Maggie Stiefvater is an outstanding fantasy.

I don't like the current definition of Urban Fantasy that places anything a

This book is everything I longed for Wicked Lovely to be. I got sucked in first chapter and settled back and let Maggie Stiefvater take me away.

Fairies done right (intriguing and vicious), the joys/sorrows of young love, and natural feeling amusing dialogue; combined with a seductive sadness undertone to the writing makes this book freaking brilliant.

horrible. i've read several faerie books and this one was the worst. the main character just learns of the world of the fey so nonchalantly that it seems completely unbelievable and ridiculous. the references that her family was involved with the fey and now isnt is preposterous as the mom and aunt (who is or isnt a villain)dont get what's going on. and the relationship between the 2 protagonists, that they are in love after a few encounters is just sad. this was a horrendous book where the More...

Deidre is wicked talented - she sings and plays the harp like an angel. But on the day of just another competition, she meets Luke, who is as talented as she is and takes a wonderfully uncanny interest in what Deidre is capable of doing. Happy enough to not ask too many questions, Deidre soon realizes that Luke is much more that he seems and that the shadowy figures that dart in and out of her consciousness are part of the same mystery. In a world where Faeries are NOT your friend and special More...

My first thought upon finishing: wow. I'm a big fan of the urban fantasy genre - faeries have never swamped the young adult genre as much as vampires and werewolves, so it's always a breath of fresh air to pick up a book like this, especially one written by an author that I already adore. And yet again, she does not disappoint!

I bought this book having read the outstanding 'Scorpio Races' and thought nothing could be as lucidly, as magically, as beautifully written: and I was wrong.
'Lament' is a love story between a young girl, Deidre, and an other-worldly boy, the assassin, Luke. Luke has had his soul stolen and held hostage by the Faerie Queen - a thoroughly nasty piece of work, also called Deidre. She's paranoid psychotic and sends Luke out to kill anyone who might threaten her - particularly the human 'clo More...

Lament was the first novel Maggie Stiefvater wrote, followed by the sequel/companion book Ballad, out the following year. While it’s clear to me that the author has gotten much better with her subsequent books, these are quite good and I was happy to read them.

Lament focuses on the story of 16-year-old Deirdre (“Dee”) Monoghan, a talented singer, harp player, and a “cloverhand,” or one who can see faeries. Her best friend James plays the bagpipes, and similarly to Dee, is not only an More...

What's Good About It

I'm easily won over by faeries. Particularly faeries of the ruthless, cunning, child snatching variety, and there is plenty of that going on in Lament. The faery mythology draws heavily from Gaelic and other European traditions, and the faeries are terrifying for it. They plot and scheme and murder and hide in the shadows just out of eyesight - spine tingling!

James is the best character, though I must confess, I read book two, Ballad, first, and that featu More...

I am beginning to suspect that Maggie Stiefvater may be a witch or faerie of some sort. How else could her words be as thoroughly enscrolling as they are? While I didn't find myself quite as engrossed in Lament as The Wolves of Mercy Falls (review), it still bore Stiefvater's characteristic lyricism and beauty, and for that, I loved it.

As for the story itself, Luke and Deirdre's attraction to each other was sweet and romantic and a little too perfect. However, they redeemed themselve More...

Where is my dream of fairy prince?

Очередной роман, посвященный фэйри оказался куда приятнее серии Меллисы Марр, но я все равно останусь верна «Iron King» (гложут меня большие сомнения, что я под конец не выдержу из закажу эту серию). I’ve read a lot of books about faeries and I’ve really come to love them. I love seeing each authors take on faerie lore and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed Maggie Stiefvater’s take in Lament.
It’s obvious from the beginning that Deirdre is not your average sixteen-year-old girl. Her musical ability is exceptional to the point of almost unheard of.
