They said it couldn't be done, but The Accountant's Guide to the Universe is the first entertaining book on accounting written for a general audience.

The book opens with a wild premise: Heaven and Hell have been outsourced to a giant company in a distant galaxy and they are now in charge of determining who goes where after death. The entire universe is scoured for an objec

You can pretty clearly tell this book was written by a professor to assign as reading to his accounting 101 class as a way of simply explaining the basic principles of accounting in a supposedly more palatable format, the novel. You can also tell he was a big fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe series and wanted to write something similarly smart and funny. Well, that's a tall order. Yes, nearly a year after graduating with a finance degree and 5 years after declaring ANYTHING BUT ACCOUNTING, I read an accounting book--for fun. This book was fun though! It was a silly and a very light refresher on accounting, more conceptual than actual nuts and bolts accounting. But it's hard to make a narrative out of balance sheets and income statements, even if I had a professor say that one is like a snapshot (balance sheet) of a company and the other is like a video (income statement, ...more

Entertaining, a little preachy at the end. I wouldn't recommend it unless you like to read books on accounting. You can tell the author was STRONGLY influenced by Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide"

What a strange amalgam! It starts off very Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-ish, then explains accounting, then goes off on a very philosophical bent at the end. That's not to say it's bad, because it is good, but it does morph several times as it goes on.

Pretty good. Off-the-wall and hard to characterize. Kind of an accounting primer, but entertaining, too. I do, however, take offence at Hovey's narrator's choice for most hellish singer. I LIKE Justin Timberlake!

The jacket was enticing enough for me to buy this....the opening showed promise....but then it quickly turned into an accounting text and I lost interest

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I was hoping for more information about accounting.
