Found in Translation
by Roger Bruner
Summary
Faith, obedience, and forgiveness intersect in a remote Mexican village.
When Kim Harlinger--eighteen and spoiled--arrives on a mission trip to Mexico and discovers, to her chagrin, that she'll be doing construction in a remote village without plumbing and electricity, rather than evangelism in a medium-sized town with a fast-food joint...she has only two choices. "Rough it" (which isn't exactly what Kim had in mind when she signed up for this trip) or tu More...

Kim heads off on a mission trip adventure that will be filled with what she knows she does best: evangelism. Only Kim missed the memo. The trip was changed and is no longer the one she signed up for. Instead of going to a Mexican city to tell people about Jesus, she is sent to a remote village to do construction work. Kim starts out with a seriously disgruntled attitude about the misunderstanding until she remembers why she signed up in the first place.

Kim Hartlinger's lively teen voice will draw you in from page 1. She is a spoiled eighteen-year-old who has missed her connecting flight and fears the bus will leave without her for the mission trip to Mexico. What she doesn't know is that the mission has changed, and the hairdryer, make-up and other paraphernalia she has brought in her four super-size suitcases will be useless. Despite her humorously-presented faults, Kim has a sincere relationship with the Lord, and when she finally makes it t More...

Self-absorbed, arrogant, naïve, that is the Kim Hartlinger who depended on a faulty watch to get her to her first mission field. Determined to place blame with anyone other than herself, she finds reminders of her faithful God at every turn.
When even the basics are yanked out from under her, Kim prays she can reach people—people she can barely communicate with—for Jesus. There she discovers her heart isn’t made out of selfishness, but kindness. She just didn’t know it at first.

“Found in Translation” by Roger Bruner was not one of the books, I would have picked for myself. Abbi Debelack, however, recommended this to me and it ended it being one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. It was a bit religious but that was okay, because it gave me a new perspective on the books I read.
“Found in Translation” is basically about how even the tiniest things in life could affect your life dramatically. It may not seem like it, but they can. The overall lesson also was to play cl More...

Found in Translation by Roger Bruner was the first book I ever read from NetGalley, and to be honest it was the cover that drew me in. The story itself centers around Kim Hartlinger, a spoiled, smart-mouthed 18 year old, who is on a mission trip to do a good deed and spread the Gospel in Mexico. Equipped with a near-lifetime supply of makeup, hair products, and even a karaoke machine, Kim is positive that she will find fun in the city between her do-good sessions... but, much to her dismay, the More...

Kim is a spoiled but well-intentioned Christian teenager. She sets off to Mexico, planning to do street evangelism; instead, she winds up in rural (and we are talking off-the-map, findable only by GPS type of rural) Mexico doing construction work for a village devastated by a natural disaster. Construction work? So much for the manicure she got at the airport before realizing that she was several hours late for her flight. No electricity? Farewell to the special hairdryer she packed in one of he More...

I was reading this book as part of my job as a Library Technician in a school library and I was very pleasantly surprised by the story on many different levels. The main character was strong and funny with many human weakness that I related to. The questions raised regarding spirituality, faith in God, and living that faith daily were dealt with in a way that many people would connect with, and I could see it as a tool to bring young people to seek to know Christ. The story had several layers in More...

Found in Translation is a great read for any teen or young adult that has been on or would like to go on a mission trip. Kim starts out on her mission trip with several oversized suitcases, all the essentials of life (hair dryer, cute clothes, etc.) and big plans for her mission. Plans go awry and her ideas of what the mission trip will be are demolished, as demolished as the small town in Mexico where the mission team begins their adventure. Kim and the other team members change not only the to More...

FOUND IN TRANSLATIONS is a story of one girl's journey from being a selfish, self-centered young woman to finding meaning and purpose through a mission trip. She's forced to look beyond her own needs. Before her trip even begins, nothing goes as planned. Kim learns quickly that being inflexible isn't going to cut it. She must adapt, and quickly, to the changes she has no control over. She learns a swift lesson in, our plans are not always what God has planned, and for good reason. The importance More...

Found in Translation is a story centered around a slightly-spoiled teen girl with a heart for mission work, is a great encouragement and inspiration to other mission-minded youths. While I had a hard time getting into the story, I’m thinking it’s just because I don’t normally read this genre. For readers who do enjoy these types of YA books, I am sure that they will enjoy the message that Roger Bruner brings to teens about mission work.

Pampered Kim Hartlinger is in for the shock of her life when she arrives at her mission trip in Mexico with several suitcases full of designer clothes and a karaoke machine. Convinced that she's going to single-handedly convert everyone she meets with the help of her Spanish-English Bible, Kim sees the trip as an easy alternative to getting a summer job. But before she can unpack her Gucci loafers, she's informed that she's forgotten to read a very important email - the one telling her that the More...

This book awed me. At first I was confused, because Kim is described as a spoiled girl, but I didn't find her all that spoiled. She is simply a rich child who is used to being able to buy whatever. However, her personality was very down to earth, and she is very sweet.
Her relationships with the others blossom and encourage her experience on the trip. This book gave me a huge desire to use my Spanish abilities and share the gospel in other countries, especially seeing how much Kim learned from it More...

A great book for teenagers, particularly girls. The author is a personal friend, and while he's okay with the money, his maid desire is that the book make an impact in the lives of the readers!!

I enjoyed this book! Not just for young adults. This spiritual "coming-of-age" story will touch readers of all ages.

I loved this book simply for the context. If he writes more books about mission trips, I'd read them all. I felt like I was right there with them.

Very good Christian book that would be appropriate for a young teenage girl. Easy read.
