Can the world be seen in black and white? Perhaps. Newborn feet ink birth certificates. Father's stethoscope hangs from the lab coat in his closet. Border collies look at the world in plain darks and lights, never marveling at the wonders of rainbows. Kate Miller explores our world through verse in this collection, finding in blacks and whites some of the most colorful ima...more

Kate Miller's poems and illustrations are based on the theme of objects and images in everyday life that can be viewed as black and white...dark and light. Some poems are obvious, like raccoons in winter, bowling pins, and black and white cows. However, she cleverly finds unusual places to find such contrasts, such as a newborn baby's first inked footprint, a white streak of gray through her mother's dark hair, and Dad's stethoscope in his white lab jacket.

Summary: Poems in Black & White is a collection of poetry organized around a theme. This book would be appropriate for middle school readers. As one can imagine, the poems in this book are all about object that are black and white. Some of the objects are expected: bowling pins, spotted cows, and a border collie. Other objects are unusual; not objects one would think of right away: a newborn baby's footprints in black ink, a stethoscope hanging in a doctor's jacket, and a white streak in a m...more

This book is a collection of poems. I found some of the poems to be very insightful and full of meaning. I first thought that the poems would have some sort of connected message but I found that they did not. I was a little disappointed in this. Even though the poems were good as a whole, the book did not impress me very much. I would recommend this to teenagers who are interested in writing poems on a variety of topics. I did enjoy the book even though it was not what I expected.

(Poetry)There were some great poems in this book! Beautiful illustrations done all in black and white. Some of the poems seemed like a stretch to be about black and white, but there were still very well written.

The illustrations really enhanced my enjoyment of these poems. I especially loved "The Cow" with its accompanying drawing.

Miller created terrific, original pieces of art to accompany her poems all about things that are black and/or white, such as a starry sky, a crow, newborn babies' inked footprints, border collies, and more. My favorite poem is the second in the book, "Comet." Great verbal and visual images of a comet streaking across a night sky.
