Well, I have to say I'm very honestly surprised by this one. I picked up Full Metal Panic simply because I knew TokyoPop's light novel line had been discontinued, so I just bought it thinking if I didn't I'd regret it later. And after reading it (which took only a day) I have to say I came away loving it.
This novel is the basis for both the manga and anime series and I have honestly read/watched neither of them. I'm very likely to now, though.
The story is a action/sci-fi with great moments of co

This books plays out a lot like the anime episodes based upon it. The book gives a little more background behind each character and I feel that the descriptions are more realistic than the anime. Did you know that Kaname's hair is black? It's blue in the anime, but I believe they were giving it the "it's so black, it's blue" treatment. I really enjoy the layout and the humor is still hilarious after all the years. This first book is pretty easy to find (the 3rd book being the hardest), so I woul ...more

One of the best combinations of comedy, action, and romance I have ever read, though the romance is admittedly the lesser of the three in this volume. The "fish out of water" comedy of Sousuke Sagara, a boy trained to be an assassin, then raised in a war zone after he failed to assassinate the general he was sent to kill trying to adapt to living as a normal high school student in Tokyo is very funny. The extremes to which he goes to guard Kaname Chidori, the beautiful girl who is being targeted ...more

This series is so far my favorite Japanese light-novel series. For those familiar with the anime, the events from this volume are covered in the first 7 episodes.

One of the things I really like about this series is the self-consistent science fiction. Gatou has made a very believable world that is very similar to our own, just with a few differences in recent history and some new technology.

It seems to me the author started building the background for the series by first asking, 'What advances i

Eh. This series is kinda like what would happen if Archie comics and Robotech had a bastard love child. Its a very light read. The girls are very much girls and the boys very much boys, and don't expect them to act any smarter than their prescribed gender roles. I expected the story to eventually focus on the interesting idea of "The Whispereds", who are haunted by a voice that helps them develop genius level understanding of technology. However, it seemed like this plot was only utilized sparin ...more

After watching the anime which is also a briliant anime, I got interested in reading the novel as well.

It was a very smartly written book as the author can comfortly combined war, high-school love, and comedy into one complete interesting story.

Sousuke Sagara who got little common sense because of his environment full of battlefield is coupled nicely with Chidori, who is a normal but quite-mysterious high school girl. Their love story is interesting also since Sousuke is a little bit slow in rec

I think the main problem I had with this book is the translation being choppy and awkward. I love the love/hate story between the main characters, and I love the Sci Fi aspect, but I am so used to the visuals of the Anime I found reading it tedious. Some phrases sounded out of place and adverbs didn't quite fit, but again I chalk that up to mediocre translation.
I will continue to read these though, since it looks like the Anime won't have an ending until the books are wrapped up, its the only w

I love this anime series. The two main characters are soooo funny together. The mangas are just as good. If you can get your hands on the translations of the original books however, they are even better. I found them once, then lost them. They are a bit more serious than the manga or anime, which are quite entertaining. Highly recommended!

I think this book is not very good. It can be seen as fun and some context but the translation just stops what would be fun right out of it. I'm also just not sure that the story in and of itself is one worth reading. At least it is easy to read in short to get through.

A really good and funny story that ties in conspiracy without much government to it. It is really funny to see military genius, civilian clueless, Souske try to blend in at a regular high school. Comedy ensured with action.

I really enjoyed the story!! I've never seen the anime, but it makes me want to watch it, although I heard it wasn't as good.
Definitely going to look for the other books in this series, however.

Not an artistic translation... it read like the novelisation of a video game, but it's a lot of fun for all that. Much easier to follow than the manga.
This book is sooo good! It is just a touch better than the anime and difficult to put down. Can't believe it was written in 1998!
