Might be my favorite book in the series so far. I love the characters. Gregor, Luxa, Boots, Temp, Ripred, and Ares are all great. And I can totally understand why Ripred is Suzanne Collins's favorite character.

For any Hunger Games fan, the earlier Suzanne Collins series is a worthwhile read. While it doesn't have the depth of THG, and is written for a younger age group (11-12 year olds), it carries many of the same themes as THG: the conflict between different groups, poverty vs wealth, violence and war. Just finished the third installment of the Gregor the Overlander series but while still giving it 3 stars felt that it was not as compelling as the first two and the solution to the story's problem quite disappointing. This series continues to be high quality. Each book leads well to the next without either wasting lots of time rehashing the previous story or leaving the reader floundering trying to recall past plot details (since originally they were obviously not released all at once, readers would have had time between reading each book).

Each book leads well to the next without either wasting lots of time rehashing the previous story or leaving the reader floundering trying to recall past plot details (since originally they were obviously not released all at once, readers would have had time between reading each book).

As an adult reader there are a significant amount of underlying messages in these books, about the different types of courage, different types of strength, empathy, finding alternatives to physical confrontation, trust, racism, Othering, maturity, family, honesty, holding to one's word, knowing when one should change from a predetermined path, etc. The entire series is a statement on the physical, mental, emotional, and societal effects of war (prisoners of war, biological weaponry, politics, the death of good people, uneasy alliances, genocide, following commands, post traumatic stress disorder, permanent disability, etc.), but it's all done in a way that won't drag down young readers. It's much more carefully layered and gently placed than Collins' more famous series, with characters that are far better drawn and much more likeable.

This particular book was slightly disappointing to me in that the final twist was too foreshadowed, so that it was not in any way a surprise to me (view spoiler). It's hard to judge whether that would be clear to readers of the age the book is directed toward, however, and whether they would be disappointed as I was at the obviousness or if they would just be proud that they'd figured it out before Gregor and crew did.

Temp remains my favourite character. He holds the somewhat Neville Longbottom-ish position, in that he is picked on, derided, laughed at, not thought much of, alone, different, not capable of much either physically or mentally, quiet, trying to disappear into the background, yet at the same time he silently mourns the loss of a loved one (Tick was his mate, after all), is fiercely brave and protective, is willing to sacrifice himself (often sacrificing legs or antenna and always willing to die for his quest-mates) for the good of the group, is tender and gentle and patient with Boots, is loyal, and continues to step forward into situations that terrify him because he feels they're the right thing to do. He gets little honor or attention but he plods steadfastly on and saves the lives and minds of those around him on many occasions. That's a kind of bravery and strength that I'm always glad to see demonstrated in kids' books, that you don't have to be a foolhardy hero who jumps shouting into the fray and knows all the right answers. Nor do you have to be the reluctant prophesied savior who always has all eyes upon him and forever keeps his back straight as he prepares to meet his certain doom. You can instead be the one who is quietly always there and ready and continuing to try your best and remembering the needs of the loved ones around you.(less)

Between the first and the second book on the series, I would rate this third book as the second best.
There were a lot of new stuff happening in Underland this time around. Some revelations that left me in disgust especially what happened to all of the infected creatures.

So what makes this one better? Here are my thoughts:

This is the first one that I truly could not put down. For one reason or another it was more engaging than the first two - maybe it was because of the seriousness right from the beginning, since characters that we already know and care for have the plague that is very deadly. Whatever the reason, I read this book in one sitting.

I thought this prophecy was the best one so far - though the first one was really good too. While the first prophecy basically meant what they thought it meant with a few things they misinterpreted, this one ended up being entirely wrong. I don't know how many people would pick up on that from the beginning, but I did have a few suspicions. I couldn't figure out how or why it was wrong right away though, which kept me intrigued. It is a prophecy that really has me thinking and trying to figure it out, which is a good thing.

Finally, I loved the introduction of the new character, Hamnet. (As an interesting side note, you may or may not know that Collins named this generation of characters after Shakespeare's children - just like the characters in the book, Shakespeare had twins named Hamnet and Judith, and another daughter named Susanna. I thought that was a fun little allusion that was nice and subtle). I thought Hamnet was a really great character - in many ways he was one of the really good guys. He was brave, seemed to know everything about the jungle, and seemed to have good judgement. But the secret that he had lived with made him flawed as well. I was super sad to see him killed off, as I would have loved to get to know his character a bit more. Also, I think someone who is a bit more anti-war would be useful for what is no doubt coming in the next few books.

The ending was really well done. In many ways it is kind of a wake-up call, to point out exactly what sort of harm human beings can do. Although the series has always been about war and fighting, that was never more clear than in this book. It has delved into biological warfare, and we can only imagine what might come or what will happen next before we inevitably reach the climax of Book 5.(less)

Having read the first two books of the Hunger Games, and my wife having read all three, we got Collins first published series. Top notch reads overall, engaging and clever, she flexes her world-building muscles in these and to great effect. I give all them 4 stars, expect the last book.

1. They go on a long dangerous journey to find some cure, only to discover that they already had the cure back home. When they get back the sick are already recovering. Collins tries to explain that if they hadn't gone on the journey Gregor never would've "figured it out". The only problem with that theory is that nothing on the journey helped him dicipher the riddle and find the cure. He could've done it just as easily it home and saved a whole lot of trouble. POINT-LESS.
2. While in the dangerous jungle, a couple in their party go on ahead to an even more dangerous part and bring back a single leaf of what they thought was the cure. Apparently the whole idea behind the single leaf was to bring it back to identify it, but how much brainpower does it take to figure out that Starshade would be shaped like a star? So instead of getting a bunch the first time, they all have to go back in to the deadly area, whereupon two of them die and all the Starshade is overrun by giant ants. DOUBLE POINT-LESS.
3. The riddle itself that is supposed to tell where to find the cure is so ambiguous that even after we know what's going on, the characters have to have a several page dialogue just to explain it to the reader. Shouldn't a solution to a riddle make you say, "Oh, so that's what that meant!" ?. After hearing Gregor's feeble attempt at explaining this one, all I was thinking was "Huh?". This last point was not so much pointless as lame.
So I guess I've used two words to describe this book and if you still want to read it, you may need your head examined. (Especially because I just ruined it for you.)
I've continued to read the Overlander series because I loved the Hunger Games trilogy, and people have assured me that these books get better. Ha! The only thing these books have in common with Hunger Games is Collin's overzealous anti-war agenda.
Sorry, Suzanne. Three strikes and Gregor is out.

Have these Underlanders ever, since Mr. Sandwich took them below, had a non-prophecy day? It seems to me that Gregor is always hopping down the air shaft to go fufill some underground prophecy and no one bats an eye (or eyes a bat, ha ha ha), like prophecy-fulfilling is a daily thing, something everyone knows about and engages in from birth. Like breathing and eating. It makes me think that Sandwich and others scheduled every day from now until the series ends with prophecy-doing.

I really am enjoying this series. In fact I think they are getting a bit better each time. I think Collins was really learning how to grip her readers with the first one, and now is picking up speed. I started my day reading this book and I finished it by lunch time. Not a bad morning, in my opinion! (Not terribly productive, either, but that's another story for another day.)

What I liked best about this book was its ambivalence to war and violence. The hardest paper I wrote in all of my undergraduate days was a philosophy paper on whether violence was ever justified. Prior to writing the paper, we read Thoreau's Civil Disobedience and watched Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. What I liked best about this book was its ambivalence to war and violence. The hardest paper I wrote in all of my undergraduate days was a philosophy paper on whether violence was ever justified. Prior to writing the paper, we read Thoreau's Civil Disobedience and watched Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. I struggled to decide what I believed as I wrote that paper. I met with the professor outside of class. I asked for an extension on the paper. And I'm still not sure what I believe, even a decade after first faced with this issue. I have a very difficult time with violence, even for self-defense or the defense of higher ideals. This is one of many, many reasons I am not in charge of making these kinds of decisions in real life. I like to think. I like to ponder. And when I have spent time meditating on an issue and still can't reconcile what I feel, think and believe, it saddens and frustrates me.

This book aptly illustrates how complex the issue is. Gregor never wanted to be a warrior, yet he has seen his role clearly defined via the two prophecies preceding this one. Near the end of the book is this passage: "The more he thought, the more his mind reeled in confusion. We were right to fight. It was wrong to fight. We had to fight. It was pointless to fight. He simply did not know where he stood, and it made him feel crazy." Ah, Gregor. I completely understand this. And I love that Collins has believably written a character who struggles to come to grips with how we reconcile what we believe and what we must do. Where and how do beliefs and actions align? Do they always align or must they sometimes diverge?

Don't get the impression that this book is a downer. Like the rest of this series, it's a hair-rising, wild and fun ride. Don't let my inner angst keep you from trying it.(less)

This book had some very sad parts as well as a pretty deep discussion about what fighting and war really mean especially after the fact. I listened to the third book in the Underland Chronicle driving from Tampa, FL, to Tallahassee, FL, then from there partway to Lake Lure, NC. I was the most energized by this installment. As far as the overabundant action sequences in the series go, these battles were first rate, and most closely parallel Collin's battle scenes in the Hunger Games trilogy.
