This series has a really cool concept. I like the plots, the characters, even the bad guys are incredibly worthy opponents. Wow, the villain Ruth? She is one evil woman. I wish more villains were written like her.

3rd book in Frank's Nightwalker series. This is the story of Elijah, the Demon Warrior Captain and Siena, the Lycanthrope Queen. It also continues the story of the ongoing war between the Necromancers and the Nightwalker's This one really tried my patience in reading. It took me until I got to the last half of the book to really get interested in the story. I guess that is why it has been laying around the house for almost 2 weeks. I REALLY like this paranormal romance series! (Nightwalkers, by Jacqueline Frank) Ms. Frank spends most of each book letting you get to know the characters and their relationships with one another. Not just the featured romantic couple, either - you get to see many different sides of all the main characters. The resulting universe she creates is full and rich with a lot of depth. Elijah is the warrior captain for his people known as the Butcher to the other Nightwalkers, he is both respected and feared from everyone. Elijah is the wind, he controls the air and weather around. Eli gets caught in a trap, by someone he once knew and respected but his fellow demon has moved on to the dark side and joined that of their most feared enemies the necromancers(black magic users that are evil and uses their powers to summon demons). Who comes to his rescue surprises him and leaves him a little hot below his belt. he once killed her people during the wars can he move above what he has known is entire life and find love in the very species he has come to distrust.

Siena is Queen of the Lycanthropes in this cases Lycans aren’t just wolves they are considered to be any form. If you can change into a dog you are considered a Lycanthrope ,heh kind of loses all sexy when you think of it in that terms. Well Siena is sexy she is feisty cat a Cougar all sleek muscle and strength but when it comes to her heart its all chocolate and gooey easily melted by the butcher himself. She saves the life of the very man that is considered the enemy by her people, but she cant fight the love she feels for this man who has become apart of her. Selfish reasons keep her from embracing him whole heartedly because there is no way she will share her kingdom with a warrior when she has fought to keep her people from war and moved them into an era of civilization. All that she has worked for is threatened by this thing called love.

So the war is close to home, and some of the characters that I have come to love suffers a very close call in death. Elijah and Siena are a perfect match for kicking butts and taking names. They both are strong, stubborn and tough. She rules a monarch and he protects his people, the ultimate fighters and fighting they do. This book was just pure fun and action. I was spellbound by the fight scenes in this one, just great storytelling. Everyone just blends so well together you cant help but pump your fists in victory when they take down a bad guy. The background characters are just awesome, Siena’s sister is female to be reckoned with and I cant wait to read her book next. The third book in this series is just awesomeness. I enjoyed it a lot and steam factor wise it’s a 3.5, but who cares these demons/lycans be on fire anyways.

This is an interesting premise, an interesting universe. The characters even have some nice points. But I am afraid I just do not like Jacquelyn Frank's voice. She uses lots and lots of big words. while I have nothing against big words per se, when they're all piled together in one huge heap of wordiness, my head tends to explode, my eyes start to cross (worse than usual) and I start skimming. I really wanted to give this book a 4 star rating. I enjoy the author and definitely enjoy the world she has created. I think it's different from other worlds about vampires and shapeshifters. However, I could only manage a 3 star rating for this one.

Wow, I have fallen head over heals in love with the Nightwalker series.

Where Gideon was very romantic with long years of unknown yearning and deep seated emotion, Elijah is packed with raw passion and violent need. It really packs a punch. There were some scenes in this book that left my mouth completely dry and my face rather warm, to say the least.

Though I liked Elijah for the most part, the Nightwalker series is starting to lose my interest a little. I found Siena very annoying and felt that Elijah could have had a better mate. I understood her reasoning to deny what was happening, but it was too extreme. The romances remain sappy and apparently I prefer a little more grit to paranormal romances. Elijah is the 3rd book in the Nightwalker series....and so far it is one of the better stories in my opinion. There was more tension and action in this installment.

Characters....
Elijah is the Warrior Captain of the Demons, and it is his job to ensure the safety of his race by taking on the threats. He is very strong willed, stubborn and fiercly loyal. These are the sides he shows to everyone....the ones who personally know him also know that he is kind and caring.

In this entry in The Nightwalkers series, while all your favorite characters are present, the focus has been turned towards the lycanthrope branch of the Nightwalker family. Okay, I loved it. Elijah’s story moved the Nightwalker series forward by leaps and bounds. We saw a little of Ruth’s power and insanity. Previously, I did not understand how Ruth was passing as human and convincing magic users to die needlessly for a cause that seemed senselessly escalated. It’s still a stretch but the plot works much better in my mind now. I also see how this installment will ensure that her craziness will continue and will have no bounds. She is a formidable enemy.

We met Elijah’s mate Siena, the Lycanthrope Queen, in the previous book -- Gideon. Siena saves Elijah’s life and discovers she is attracted to him in an unnatural way. Siena had become Queen when her father was taken out with extreme prejudice by Elijah a couple of decades earlier. Her father had declared war on the demons, Elijah’s race, because of some slight that was never really explained to my satisfaction. Apparently, he was a warmonger and the demons were his target, enough said. Siena did not share her father’s hatred of the demons thus she has ruled her people with intellect and peace since his demise. She even fought besides Noah, the demon King, in the last book.

Here is where it gets tricky and we get a taste of Ms. Frank’s creativity. Imprinting for the Nightwalkers is the process in which nature forces demons to fall in love and bond with their mates. In the first book, Jacob, this happens with a human of Druid decent. In the second book, Gideon, this happens with two demons. Both of the previous couples have a historical precedence for the imprinting to work. Not the case with Siena because Imprinting does not happen to shifters. They choose their mates or choose not to have one. Siena had chosen not to have one because he would rule as King, her equal. She learned from her father that King’s could be a problem when the Queen dies or is not a strong ruler. So Elijah has his work cut out for him right off the bat. That’s basically the heart of the romance component of the book. The hostility which began as a few random summoning of demons by black magic users has now become a full on war led by an Ancient mind demon named Ruth. Ruth is your typical protagonist; she is crazy and cares not how much blood she has to spill to get to Noah and Jacob. You must read from book one or you won’t truly understand what pushed her over the edge.

I enjoyed the way all the characters from previous books interacted and were made an integral part of the story. We meet a few new ones and go to another level of weird with Siena’s sister and the siren. Some romance series writers leave out or skim over details about the lives of previous and future couples to focus mainly on the staring couple. I would say it’s about a 50/50 spilt with Ms. Frank. The only weakness for me is the same one I noted before -- over narration of kisses and caresses. It’s clearly Ms. Franks writing style and plenty of readers love wading through pages of thinking and touching. I don’t mind it with world-building but I just can’t stomach a thousand words to go from kiss to afterglow. To be fair, it's not to my personal taste, thus I took off only one star. Everything else about this book was dead on.

She just believes a great deal of information gleaned from the previous books is required to catch readers up in subsequent books. While some info is helpful, I believe a reader has to accept that when you pick up a book in the middle of a series, not all the facts are available and some things you simply have to accept as not understood because you didn't have the background information. Here's how it starts out: We start off inside Elijah's head, in his thoughts. He has obviously been gravely wounded in some kind of battle. We ascertain that this was a surprise battle, one that Elijah was not expecting and he was painfully outnumbered. *****SPOILER SENTENCE RIGHT HERE---> That bitch Ruth and her bitch daughter are there, standing over Elijah, laughing at him and his pain, along with lots of black magic types. ******SPOILER SENTENCE FINISHED.

Anyways, so Elijah is all messed up and he has been hit by some iron weapons (Iron is one of the only things that can hurt/kill a demon). He realizes that his wound are mortal and that he is dying. But just when all hope is lost, he hears some kind of strange animal scream and all of the bad "guys" run off, leaving him alone.

This is Siena's entrance. We have met Siena in the last book and as you will remember, Siena is the Lycanthrope Queen. Lycanthropes and Demons have enjoyed a 14 year peace since Siena ascended to the throne after hundreds of years of war with Siena's father as King (Elijah was the Demon that killed the King but its ok - Siena isn't mad. She's actually glad for it because she was able to bring the peace that she always wanted and knew her father would never allow). Siena can turn into a catamount (mountain lion) and that is the scream that we just heard. She sees that Elijah is seriously wounded but she knows she must help him. She has a great respect for Demons (thank you, Gideon) and doesn't want to see him die but also, she doesn't want the peace between Demons and Lycanthropes threatened - she has found him in Lycanthrope territory. So Siena changes into her half catamount, half woman form (the strongest) and gets Elijah to safety. She is also weakened because sunlight is deadly to Lycanthropes and of course, this all happened just before sunrise. So she takes Elijah to this cave but its like a SERIOUS cave. One of Siena's subjects or court members uses this cave for hibernation or for solitude and relax time, I wasn't sure which. Either way, it has a water source and first aid and beds so it'll do for now. Siena cleans him up and heals him as best she can. Once all that is done, she puts him in the bed and finally gets some rest herself.

That's the start of the story. I'm sure you can see how this one will go but its still a fun ride! Again, my complaint is that SO MUCH of the beginning is ALL inner monologue. I mean, Elijah goes on and ON AND ON about dying and how much it sucks and how much it pisses him off and blah blah blah! And then Siena finds him and she spends what seems like 20 pages on detailing his hair and muscles. Ok, OK!! I get it! He's hot! She's hot! (I'm hot. You're hot... LOL!) She's super furry and super strong when she's in Werecat form (half woman, half cat). But other than the inner monologue stuff, it was a great read!! Lots of totally hot sexy time! Great bonding scenes, too. That was bonding, not bondage, you dirty birds!! LOL!

Another great thing is, if you've been reading the whole series, you get to spend some time with the couples we've already met: Jacob and Bella, Gideon and Legna and even Kane and Corrinne! So it brings everyone back together and of course, there is a big battle at the end. But we're finally making progress on getting rid of those nasty necromancers, black magic users and the two Demon traitors!!! YES!

I definitely recommend this one but I really don't think you can go out of order on these. I mean, I'm sure you can...perhaps that's why the inner monologues bother me so much? The author seems to use those times to recap what happened in previous novels. And it'll do but its so much better if you just read the books and experience everyone on their own. If you do, I think you'll really enjoy it!!! :)(less)

So far Jacquelyn Franks has given us a new love scenario in all three books of the Nighwalker series. In Jacob’s story he feel for a Druid, Gideon fell for a fellow demon and now Elijah will fall for the queen of the Lycanthropes, Siena.

This book was for different from the first two books and the first thing I noticed is the amount of lovemaking here - I liked it. A lot. It's more erotic, given that Siena is naturally a sensual creature. From the moment I read about their reaction to each other in "Gideon", I knew they were meant to be together. Their chemistry was difficult to miss, and they were both wary of each other.

I liked the story, I loved both Elijah and Siena, together, and individually. I have a thing for kickass independent women, and Siena is hardcore, like duh she's Queen of the Lycanthropes and all. Elijah is the Warrior Captain and I knew that they were perfect for each other even though they're both alpha. I loved the compromises they make, and I laud the author for not ruining Siena's character just because she fell in love.

I noticed other strong heroines who "lose" their characters, there's an inconsistency and instead of developing, they deteriorate and that leads me to like them less. All throughout the story, I'm in awe of Siena's power as Queen and though Elijah is the possessive and dominant Demon, he knows how to make his actions seem as involuntary, like a force of habit, and make Siena feel respected and loved for who she is.

Wanting Siena just for herself and not for her kingdom, Elijah pursued her relentlessly, because of this fierce attraction, Siena became temperamental which was totally understandable. I'm touched how Elijah backs down from her when she's itching for a fight, and when they got together it was explosive. I also appreciate how tastefully written their scenes were, not to mention erotic.

I also love the humor here, and how the characters from the previous books reappear and not just like a footnote. The part where Siena and Elijah expressed their true feelings and shared their thoughts were touching and I was like "that's what a good relationship is about!". Sure there's trust, but there's also a very open line of communication, followed by steamy and lusty sex.

The battle has been won here, and there has been a great discovery that would benefit them all, but Ruth remains at large and just reading about her raises my hackles up.

I've been mentioning in my reviews that there was something about Jacquelyn Frank's writing I couldn't point out that wanes my interest and I figured it out. She writes too formally and her characters are formal too, with the exception of Bella; but to be fair, her characters are aged hundreds of years, and so they speak like that.(less)

Terzo volume della serie The nightwalkers. Altro appassionante romanzo al pari dei precedenti. I personaggi principali li abbiamo già conosciuti nel secondo capitolo. Sono Elijah ,demone della terra(dolce e orgoglioso) e Siena regina dei licantropi. Una storia controversa e insolita dove i sentimenti sono contrastati soprattutto da parte di Siena . E’ una combattente nata,con sani principi e una donna molto forte. Decisa a non legarsi mai a nessuno per tutta la vita,per questo vergine convinta,si trova di fronte un demone in grado di risvegliare qualcosa di sconosciuto dentro di lei. Malgrado una sua strenua resistenza non sarà in grado di resistergli concedendogli molto più del suo corpo,ma il suo cuore. Pagine e pagine di azione intervallate da scene di passione che lasciano il segno. Bellissime ambientazioni e ottima trama. I personaggi secondari,già conosciuti negli altri volumi anche qui hanno un posto notevole senza intaccare la storia d’amore. Sono un contorno ottimo e sapientemente utilizzato per arricchire il racconto al meglio. Veniamo introdotti al volume successivo con l’entrata in scena della sorella della protagonista Syreena successiva compagna del re dei vampiri Damien. Già da tempo in lista per la lettura. Voglio far notare inoltre che anche in queste pagine non c’è solo la storia d’amore,ma tra le righe è ben evidente una storia parallela che tiene uniti tutti i libri e che sconsiglio perciò di leggere uno di seguito all’altro. Di nuovo un ottimo lavoro della Frank che ha saputo creare una saga davvero appassionante.

I have simply fallen in love with this series. What an amazing world Jacquelyn Frank has weaved for us. It's just simply amazing. I LOVED Elijah. Who knew the man who would joke and laugh with Isabella was such a fierce lover? YUMMY! I also loved the way he adapted to a situation that NO ONE could have expected. Sienna, I think rubbed me a bit of the wrong way in the beginning but I loved her by the end.

Book three in the Nightwalkers series is the story of Elijah, Demon Warrior Captain extraordinaire, and Siena, the Lycanthrope Queen. See all those capitals in that sentence? That is what Jacquelyn Frank’s writing is like for me: emphatic, a little bigger than life, sometimes a little too important sounding, but at the same time quite fun. This audiobook made for an excellent weekend listen while I got on with the mundane tasks of life.

After almost losing his life in a traitorous attack, Elijah is rescued by Siena. She nurses him back to health and the time they spend together sparks an attraction that quickly turns into an inferno. Ruler of a generally matriarchal society and genetically programmed to mate for life, Siena is reluctant to accept her feelings for Elijah. After the death of her mother, her father assumed control of the monarchy and his hate for the demon race drove centuries of conflict. As a result, Siena refuses to share her sovereign power with any male. In addition to the emotional struggle the couple faces, the forces that ambushed Elijah have devised a plan that, if successful, would plunge the entire Nightwalker world into war.

What I liked:

I enjoy the power dynamics in the characters’ relationships. Ms. Frank does an excellent job at combining Alpha and Beta characteristics in her heroes rather than mainlining one genre convention. We also get some relationship angst but these characters are able to actually have discussions with one another and relationship conflict resolution is almost always over by the first half, leaving the second half of the book for external conflict resolution.

More so than any other author in the genre, Frank writes love scenes that vary widely in tone from serious and intense to passionate and just plain fun. I enjoy the playful scenes because so often in these types of stories, intimate acts are all about dominating animalistic need and quite frankly, variety is the spice of life.

What I didn’t like so much:

I haven’t completely bought in to a level of gravitas in the world-building that requires the word choices Frank employs. On one hand, I get the ‘ancient demon society with years of culture’ aspect that drives the prose to grandiose levels but I sometimes think it can be interpreted as pretentious.

This book was a bit heavy on exposition and on catching the new reader up on the back-story.

The narration:

I think a large part of what makes this series so successful for me is the narration. Ms. Sands uses a cadence for the exposition that makes me take the text more seriously than if I was reading it and the dialogue has a natural flow with excellent character differentiation. There is an intimate quality to the reading of the sex scenes that invests them with emotional content and avoids the type of over-dramatic narration that tends to make me uncomfortable. Objectively, I might question the true-to-life nature of the French and Russian accents but to be honest, I’ve never seen the Nightwalker world as an alternate reality so I’m not listening for real-world analogs; I take the accents as given for the various races.

If you are looking for an intro to Paranormal Romance or prefer your PNR heavy on dominant alpha men, this isn’t the best book to pick. If you’re looking for an audiobook that can suck you in to a larger-than-life story with well-voiced characters, this series would be a good choice.(less)

I really enjoy how Jacquelyn Frank includes her past characters so heavily in her books. Some authors that write series are not very good at it and we tend to forget about the past characters. Not so in Frank's books, and I am very glad for it.

Gideon is really growing on me, and I realized after I finished reading this book, how much more I liked the first two books. I love Elijah, I just wasn't a huge fan of Elijah and Siena. He cow-towed too early and too hard in my opinion. I would have liked...more

Book #3 in the Nightwalkers series was a slow starter for me, but it finally grabbed me with the involvement of the power couples from the previous two stories. Yes, there was plenty of action between Elijah and his rescuer (who, of course, becomes more, much more in time) but I almost enjoyed it more when the ensemble was together. I have a love/hate relationship with the Nightwalker series. I love the storyline, the characters are great and I always come away with a sigh of enjoyment at the end of each book. So, book three is centers around Elijah, guard to the Demon King and Siena, the Queen of the Lycanthropes. Both, though accepting of their races alignments, still harbor prejudices. Elijah is left for dead when Siena comes across him and despite their haste opinions of one another she takes Elijah to safety.

In the safety of the mountains the couple are forced to face their growing attraction for one another. Meanwhile a familiar face is still causing trouble for the Nightwalker race and is still aligning themselves with the rallying necromancers who are out for demon blood.

Final Thoughts…

Do you have to read the previous books? Meh, not really – there are moments where Frank makes references to events in previous books but they’re rarely focused on for more than a couple of sentences. The big evil in this book is a running theme, which was sparked by the events at the end of the first book.

So far this hasn’t been my favourite of the series. My love for Gideon (book two) because I loved the tension between Gideon and Legna and the way it evolved throughout to the end of the book (plus I can’t help but picture him as Eric Dane aka McSteamy)

Though Frank's romantic descriptions tend to grow quite wordy and sometimes I feel like I'm stumbling over the words as I try to process their deeper meaning she does weave a great story and once things get rolling you get sucked in headfirst. It is off putting; the thought of having to trudge through pages in order to see the story move along, but the payout at the end is worth it.

Once again, Jacquelyn Frank delivers a book that could reheat my tea without the benefit of a microwave. Whoo. Elijah is, in a word, steamy.
