This novel began with intrigue but it didn't take long for only the hope of maybe somehow getting a somewhat satisfactory resolution kept me reading. The author gets us to a small town with apparently some deep secrets. We wander (and wonder) for the remainder of the book; only to have many things never explained or resolved and a quick wrap-up to end the main part of the story.

Ford "Mac" MacDougal is recovering at Bethesda Naval Hospital from injuries sustained following a car bombing when he is awakened from his realistic dream involving his sister. He calls her the next morning and finds she was involved in an car accident and is in a coma in Edgerton, Oregon. Two days later, Mac is on his way to see his sister and find out what happened.

Catherine Coulter follows a very formula-ic rule of thumb in her mystery-romance novels. I am glad to have read far into this series and am back-reading. If not, I think I would have given up on this book.
Ford MacDougal is in a hospital, recovering from a car blast. He dreams he is falling off a cliff and feels the water rushing in. He awakes in a panic, knowing something has happened to his sister, Jilly. When he calls her house, her husband says she's been in an accident and almost drowned. S...more

This book is #4 in the FBI series. I wasn’t feeling too well yesterday, and also had trouble sleeping, so I read it all in one day. I think so far this was the worst book in the series, but it was still a good book. Sure, the main guy is a little bit slutty but I think that's realistic, especially after he's been in the hospital for a few weeks (he could try using some protection though!!). The story was a little muddled, but maybe that was my state of mind. If you like the series, youll want to...more

This is the first book I have read by Catherine Coulter, and it will be the last. It would make a poor grade b movie of the week, absent the nudity and sex. Even the sex was bad! I got the feeling that maybe her publisher was bugging her to get this one out he door. The character development was very poor, the action was illogical and the premise was like something in a batman comic. Stark naked the heroes were able to escape from their captors twice in rapid succession using essentially the sam...more
Ugh! This was the worst book I think I have ever read! This book is so horrible GOODREADS SHOULD HAVE A NEGATIVE RATING SYSTEM JUST FOR THIS BOOK!
THIS BOOK MAKES NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER! I mean NONE! WHAT SO EVER! ZIP, ZERO, ZILCH!!! Where are the editors? Who approved this thing?
The only thing that I could honestly say I learned from this book was what the weather was like in Costa Rica. Congratulations! You the worst writer I have ever read!

Catherine's fourth book was my favorite so far. The story had many twists and turns beyond the first three in her series. The characters were interesting and real, adding to the story instead of distracting from the tension. It had a standard Catherine Coulter love interest of two good looking characters... curious if authors ever write heroes and heroines that are not attractive these days:) The ending had an unexpected twist. Now on to the next in the series. - Patrick, author Lessons in the J...more
I think this is the 4th in this FBI series and it's quite predictable at this point. FBI, local Sheriff, DEA all chasing drug lords and pharm rogues. More sex than the first 3 books, and not necessarily in a good way. It's OK reading, easy on the eyes and brain. Kind of a rest from some of the other more challenging things I have been reading. This series of about a dozen books was given to me by a fellow CURVES lady. :-) otherwise I would never choose to read this cheesy romance/law enforcement...more
Some FBI agents don't even need to be on an assignment to know if something is wrong. 'Mac' is one of those guys. Even if it is a trip to see his sister after a car accident. This was an interesting look at some of his relationships.

I think I may be done with this series. And, unless she returns to historical novels, I may be done with Coulter's works in general for a while.
It's the dialogue! When reading historical novels I can put the odd dialogue off as something that isn't too odd because it is taking place in another era. For modern novels, though, the dialogue just reads as too wordy and too unbelievable. Every single character seems to speak in monologues!

I love Catherine Coulter and the 1st three books in this series were excellent. But I was disappointed with this one. The character development was poor. I didn't really feel any connection to any of the characters, except Sherlock and Savich who are repeating characters in the series.
The romance was flat and just all of a sudden, it was there. Also, I found the fact that as soon as Mac started the romance, he seemed to forget about his sister, who was missing.

First off, I liked this book. It wasn't boring. It was more than fluff, less than hard-boiled. I'd recommend it. The reason that I'm saying this up front is that there were a few issues I had with the writing, but they weren't major enough to affect my rating.
I found it really, REALLY obvious that this was written by a woman. The protagonist is a 29-year old Joe Stud He-Man FBI agent Anti-terrorism operative. Joe Stud then proceeds to share things like how he likes to walk holding hands (along...more

Hunh. Well, 'unputdownable' is not the word for this one. I was disappointed, to say the least. Reading the entire novel, I felt detached! There was nothing to the characters - I didn't feel a strong enough connection between Mac and Laura, I was upset by some of the turns of events, and there was nothing to read about in the investigation. It's like Mac asked questions about why his sister went over the cliff, then when he went searching for her. That's it! The whole thing was disappointing! Th...more
I've read this series several times, and overall I like it. This book however, is not one of my favorites.
We first met our main character, Ford MacDougal, as Lacy Sherlock's training partner in The Maze. He was shipped overseas and injured. While in the hospital, he has a dream/vision that his sister has been injured. He rushes to her, they live in a small town on the west coast called Edgerton. This one is so blah!! The narrators male voice was horrible, that fake newscaster tone. The main male character seemed like he was after anything in a skirt. The story started out good, but it just went down hill very fast. I loved how the brother/sister were so connected at such a pivotal point. But once Mac started to looking the dream he had is where things changed. The character seemed like caricatures, no one very interesting, especially the main female character. Things only got slightly i...more
Something in the middle of the book just fell flat, both in tone and weak plot. I liked having Savitch and Sherlock back as characters, which is the only reason I stuck with it. The last 1/3 of the book was more what I expected in tone, pace, etc from the previous books, so I did end up enjoying the book.
Also not thrilled with the narrator, Robert Lawrence. Did not like his voice when he was doing women's voices. We was fine when in Mac's voice which was the majority, thankfully.

The books get better as the series progresses, but you can tell that Catherine Coulter has a romance novel background because she's the premier "matchmaker" for all federal agents. They all fall madly in love within the first two days of having met and by the end of the book they are married to their new mate. The dialogue is improving too, but her characters still don't like to use contractions or slang and they've never heard of a one word answer.

This story involves drug cartel, a greedy unscrupulous family, two scientists who work for a pharmaceutical company that is a cover for the cartel and takes place in Oregon. The drug they are working on is supposed to be the Fountain of Youth, but in fact, just makes one lose one's mind and do bizarre things. The alleged girlfriend/ librarian/ undercover cop was an interesting character in this story.
Not a very well-written book. The dialogue was pretty cheesy: "I'm DEA. Of course I can hold on." Seriously? "The blankets smelled of sex." The blankets were taken from a helicopter. Do bad guys have sex in a helicopter? The story just didn't flow, and seemed put together quickly for the market. I don't even want to read any of her other books with Sherlock and Savich. No, I think I will pass on any other books written by Catherine Coulter.
It was silly really, but still compulsively readable. No insight into anything, except maybe the weather of Costa Rica and diversity of life in the rain forest. The book contains quite a bit of sex and is sprinkled with jarring statements such as, "I'd give my right nut for a beer". Still, I was interested enough to read it pretty much straight through.
I have never liked reading 1st person POV even though I think I understand why this book was written that way. The narrator didn't help either.
I couldn't warm to Mac, especially with the indiscriminate lust that made his quick fall for the heroine unbelievable.
Again, these small towns in America are scary places!!
Not one of the best in the series.

I have not read Coulter's Sherlock and Savich books in any particular order. I've enjoyed the series for the most part but this book has been a bit of a challenge. I did finish it, but it didn't seem to have the sparkle that most of her others have had. Still an ok read, that meets up with the Savich and Sherlock series. Don't you just love those two.
This book was a bit bizarre. The idea of a drug that increases your sex drive and brings back bad memories was a little too far fetched for me. It was hard for me to believe that the main character, Mac, could have sex so casually with this kind of creepy girl and then days later find the love of his life. So far it is my least favorite book in this series.
Dillon and Sherlock are called in (about 3/4 of the way through the book) to help fellow FBI "Mac" MacDougal locate his sister, Jilly.
We can all read what the book was about the the many other posts. I was not that thrilled with this one, but I will press on hoping that the rest of the series is better...especially since I already purchased the books through #15 "Split Second" :/

I like Catherine Coulter's writing, but I found this entry in her FBI series to be sub-par. The first half of the book very little happened, and the second half was ALL action; it would have been nice to have the action be spaced out more. The characters weren't as likable or believable in their actions as they usually are in her books.
Okay--I think I'm done with this series. The writing is old-fashioned and things happen just because the author wants them to, and they are not at all plausible. This one had an aburpt and unsatisfying ending and an even more unsatisfying epilogue. It's like the author just got tired writing and just decided to stop.
Another great mystery by Catherine Coulter. The ending on this one was filled with adventure and made you keep turning the pages to find what in the world was going on!! She really does know how to write a good mystery!
It did have a couple of scenes in it that were a bit distasteful, but overall a pretty good read.

I did not like this book at all. The characters were not believable nor were they someone I could connect with. At times, I couldn't even believe they were "federal agents". If I could have given a rating less than 1, I would have. Don't waste your time with this one. There are much better books in this series.
