A simple retelling of the Trojan War and how the Greeks won this war. The city of Troy lives in wonder, with a stone wall protecting it, while the Greeks live on rocky land and can't grow wheat. In order to get wheat, they have to trade with Asia, but they get past the channel because Troy won't let them pass without paying the toll (gold). After the Trojans kidnap Helen, Menelaus' wife, th More...

Odysseus (oh-DIS-ee-us) is the ruler of the Greek kingdom Ithaca. He thinks of a way for the Greeks to get inside Troy and defeat the Trojans and return Helen back to Sparta and King Menelaus (men-uh-LAY-us). They turned to Athena the Greek goddess of War, goddess of wisdom.

No one knows the whole story of the Trojan War. The book is based on the legends of Homer and Virgil, as well as on accounts by modern historians.

Kate read this to me today for school. She is studying Ancient Greek and we just started our unit on the Trojan War. This is a great book for the early elementary set (2nd through 4th grade). I would highly recommend it of you are studying The Trojan War.

This is an okay retelling of the Iliad. My 5yo and 7yo loved it, but I'm a little frustrated that they left out any mention of Achilles.

My 7 year old beginner and sort of reluctant reader loved this one to pieces. He taped himself reading it aloud to enjoy later.

Decent read for 2nd graders with a background knowledge. The art is really awful, but decent outline of the story.

I previewed several versions of the Trojan horse story and this one won. It told the story simply and without a ton of gore. Obviously it had to leave a lot out (it's a children's book for heaven's sake) but it was a nice, solid introduction.

The kids picked it up and looked through it over and over again. We finally bought it. I'll definitely use again for the elementary kids. For the older ones they'll read Rosemary Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy.

This was a simple retelling of the Trojan War and the journey home. Nice book to give a basic overview for your children of the war before moving on to harder retellings.
