I reviewed this book for Romance Reader At Heart website.

My first clue to the quality of writing and editing of this book should have been the blurb on the back of it. The second sentence--"Firmly on the shelf at twenty-five, instead she's determined to find the perfect match for her beautiful younger sister. "--has the word `INSTEAD,' which frankly should not be there. It makes no sense. Take the word out, and now we have a comprehensible sentence. This sentence--"Now Serena can beg his help i...more

The pirate Redstone and the Earl of Savege are both Alex - Alex Savege. Alex Savege and Serena Carlyle have a chance encounter and are smitten with one another. But Serena finds out that Alex is betrothed to her younger sister Charity. Is Alex and Serena's love doomed?
This is a book that I won at a pirate workshop at the RT Booklovers' Convention in 2011 in Los Angeles, and I was SO excited to have won it. This was the first book of Katherine Ashe's that I'd ever read, and I was impressed by t...more

At 25, Serena has given up hope of ever finding love or a husband. But she is a loyal sister and is determined to help her step-sister Charity make a match with the Earl of Savege. Of course, Serena has no idea that it's the Earl she has come across in a dark parlour, just before Charity is to meet the man. Sparks fly the second Serena and Alex meet. And the two share some passionate moments without ever exchanging names. When they come face-to-face at Alex's introduction to Charity, they are st...more

And it looks like thinks are lining up when Alex Savage, the neighboring Earl, is working towards an offer for Charity. There are just a few problems...

From Goodreads: She would marry no man . . .

Hmm.. Erm, I got very confused through this about who the hell wasa whom and then random characters seemed to just appear... I eally can't have been paying much attention. Anyways, the Heroine was annoying and all 'I mut protect her all the time. I must I must. Screw common sense ill do this. I need the hero to get with my sister, his betrothed even though im doing the dirty with him..'
The hero was.. kinda funny sometimes but also quite borig too. Plus when he takes a bullet, just before he doe...more

This book was given to me to review and the following opinions are my own.

When Serena needs to escape from her overbearing stepmother she hides in a empty room but it is not as empty as she thought. Soon captured in an embrace with a stranger all her rational thoughts flee leaving her to enjoy the amazing embrace. What she soon realises the stranger is indeed the man her family is wanting to marry her younger sister. She has to ignore her own feelings and help her sister secure the marriage. Of...more

In Katharine Ashe's "Captured By a Rogue Lord," the Earl of Savege is secretly Captain Redstone, the pirate captain of the "Cavalier." He robs the rich in a complicated scheme of vengance. In a darkened chamber at a ball, he encounters Serena Carlyle. Their encounter turns rather heated.
The problem is he's at the ball to meet and possibly marry her step-sister, Charity Lucas. Things really become complicated with a bunch of smugglers, a wicked step Mama who will stop at nothing to see her Char...more

3.5*

It took me a while to get hooked on the story or the characters, but I ended up enjoying the book, even staying up too late one night to finish it. My one complaint is that during most of the book, every character is in turmoil. This reader had to hold onto the promise of a happy ending in order to not feel stressed along with the characters! ;-) But it was worth it.

Readers who enjoy historicals, pirates, heroines who aren't blushing ingenues, and wicked step-mothers should enjoy this. I'm...more

Well done, Katharine Ashe! You kept everything I enjoyed about book 1 - mainly, your superb writing style - but kicked it up a notch with lovable characters I couldn't help but cheer for this time.

I adored the heroine, Serena Carlyle, especially: smart, loyal, daring, imaginative. Her periodic flights of fancy were utterly charming and, I suspect, something every creative writer can empathize with. Ashe successfully pulls off a difficult characterization - that of a innocent wanton - without mak...more

My review originally posted on Joyfully Reviewed: http://www.joyfullyreviewed.com/new-r...

Serena Carlyle knows that the life most aristocratic daughters expect to have will never be for her. At twenty-five, Serena is firmly on the shelf and her goal for this particular season is to ensure that her stepsister, Charity, isn't pushed into an unhappy engagement by her mother. Though, to be honest, the Earl of Savage – the man Charity's mother wants her to marry – could be the perfect bridegroom for...more

I've had a bunch of 'meh'-reads in the historical romance genre. This is not one of them! Gosh, I absolutely loved it! Katharine Ashe knows how to write good romance!
I'd never read anything by her before, but I have got to check out her other books!

I love it when I feel like gushing about a book, can you tell? ;)

Serena Carlyle has decided that at 25, marriage is not an option anymore and is determined to help her stepsisters in this area. So when her stepmother tries to get their neighbour, Lo...more

A little long in the intrigue for me which made the story drag a bit in places...but there were some definite parts of this book that rank up there with my favorites, specifically when Alex sings to Serena in the day cabin of the ship. Katharine certainly takes a slow, easy and thorough route to tying up her stories, but keeps me wanting to turn the pages.

Serena Carlyle believes she is too old to get married at 25, but she knows just the person for her younger sister. However, the younger sister is afraid of the Earl of Savega while seeing him puts Serena's blood on fire. Good story that flowed along.

I don't think I can make a coherent review for this book. It had me up til 7am and I got tingles from it. There are plenty of flaws but I liked Alex Savege so much (for reasons I can't even determine) that I fell head over heels. Oh well.

What a fantastic story! with the mystery and suspense and morals and everything... and pirates and bad guys and happy endings. I have rarely read books this complex that are this fun and amazing!
Halime Yazıcı

Liked this one better than the first one. Felt the connection with the characters and totally fell in love with them. I find this book an amazing improvement compared to the first one. Really enjoyed the relationships, a lot of the secondary characters, except her dad, and the whole plot was nice. Would definitely love to read more about some of the other characters!

2.5 Just a little too much....The heroine, Serena had too much of a cross to bare with her despicable step mother that was slightly over the top
Addictive
I found this book to be much more intriguing than her first book in this series. I'm not into pirates so much so I had a hard time getting into, but once half way through I was kind of interested.
Lisa Hutson
Good story, with a good ending of its own. While it still left open two more stories from characters. Loved the female lead.
Fira Rosli
It was good at the starting but it went downhill as I continue to read further. So, yeah. This is just bleh.
The Year of Reading Scandalously
More like a 2.5. Good, but a bit blowsy by the end. I was just flipping pages and speed reading, you know.

Fun book. First one I've read by this author. Intrigue, strong women, of course England and romance.

There was something about this book that made it hard to get into. It could be the stepmother issue, I wasn't reading Cinderella. Or it could be the lack of chemistry between these two that made it hard for to believe they were a match made in heaven. Even how they met was a bit of a stretch, Alex seemed like a cad. I did enjoy the mystery of the smugglers and was surprised by the culprit. This author is a hit or miss for me and unfortunately this was a miss. I really enjoyed In the Arms of a Ma...more
