Unfortunately I could barely finish; reads like a parody
With six new romance books having come out yesterday, I went out in the morning and bought the three I thought I would like the best and was so excited to get started ... Ms. Kramer's was the first one I read and I was unbelievably disappointed. Stopped at p22 yesterday and then decided to pick it up and quickly finish it today so I could PBSwap it. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE by Kieran Kramer is another exciting historical romance set in Regency England. It is the third in "The Impossible Bachelors" series, but can be read as a stand alone.Book One,"When Harry Met Molly",Book Two,"Dukes to the Left of Me Princes to the Right".This is an exciting, witty, amusing story of love, romance, secrets, sweet sensuality, betrayal, and finding your one true love.Jilly Jones, a new shopkeeper has a few secrets,is beautiful, plain, loves books,free-spirited,...more
I love Ms. Kramer's writing style. Her books are funny and sweet. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE is both of these things. Stephen is a fun character. Having left the navy he just wants to have fun and flirt with ladies. Everything is going according to his plan until his neighbor, Jilly Jones, shows up and tells him to stop. Instead of being offended by her meddling, he is intrigued by the bookstore owner. I loved their relationship from the very beginning. They were flirtatious and fun from t...more
Another Impossible Bachelor bites the dust. I loved this book. I love Kieran Kramer. All of her books that I have had the pleasure of reading or full of romance and are laugh out loud funny. She always finds the perfect hero for her heroines and vice versa. Of course in this series you get to know the guys first, because they were all in previous books, but she manages to weave the story in such a way that they stay true to themselves and find the women who loves and challenges them. Which I mus...more
So having read Ms. Kramer's two previous books in this series, I was excited to read this one.
The beginning was a bit sugary and it did kind of read like a parody. But as I read more of the book, I started to fall in love with the characters.
The character Otis though. He seems a bit...campy if you ask me. I liked him though and you could really tell he cared about Jilly and in the end, it's him that ends up saving something important to the characters.

The third book in the "Impossible Bachelors" series. Jilly Jones is a rather spirited and independent bookseller who happens to live on a street known for it's bad luck. But she is determined to turn that luck around for herself and for everyone who lives an works on Dreare Street in London. Next door is the very dashing, handsome, and charming Captain Stephen Arrow. It's his partying and loud and boisterous ways that bring Jilly to his door step. And instead of turning him around and getting hi...more

Parts of this book were fun, and parts of it fell flat for me. The ending in particular was a little too rushed. I would have liked to have been given a little more information about what happened to Hector, and what that meant for Jilly's financial situation. Maybe I'm just being too practical?
Also, other than a few drunken parties at the beginning of the book, Stephen didn't seem like much of a rake to me. In fact, the only evidence of it comes from Jilly, who keeps warning herself t...more

Jilly Jones ran away from her husband, who was cruel and abusive. She along with her deceased fathers valet to go Mayfair and open a book store on Dreary Lane. There she meets Captain Stephen Arrow, a rude neighbor who's looking to have fun before he sells his recently inherited house. Stephen loves Jilly's exterior prim book store persona and can tell she's more and is hiding more. He wants to learn more about her an her secrets. Okay, now this is a plot i like, even if it is part of the ridiculous Impossible Bachelors series.
Jilly left her abusive husband and is running a bookshop on Dreare Lane in London. (Dreary Lane, get it?) One of her neighbors is the recently retired Captain Stephen Arrow, who hopes to fix up the house he inherited in order to sell it. They clash, of course, and then embark on a torrid romance.
Jilly slowly befriends everybody in the block, matchmaking and improving lives. Until her husband reappe...more

This had its really great moments. But somehow i felt it got waterlogged along the way. I liked the main characters, i liked the premise and the direction of the plot, I really liked Otis the former valet. But it was really hard for me to finish it, and I can't really figure out for certain what is tripping me up on it. Maybe i just wanted more Austen-ish-anity. I like gonzo-regency, it's a joy and very funny in its anachronisms, but i guess I also want those long pauses and that plot focused on...more
Another very funny author is Keiran Kramer. This is a series of 4 books called the impossible bachelors. The premise is set up in the 1st book, "When Harry met Molly" and continues in "Cloudy with a chance of Marriage, ""Dukes to the left of me,Princes to the right, and "If you give a girl a viscount". This is another series I have donated to Rancho Mirage library so I can reread it when I want without keeping it on my shelf. "Cloudy" is my favorite as the heroine is a widow who owns a bookshop,...more

This was a really slow starter for me...like 7-8 chapters. But once Jilly and Captain Arrow started actually spending some time around each other, it took off like crazy! The romance, adventure, intimacy, friendships, danger, and resolution were spellbinding and quite memorable. I had to stay up til all hours to finish it, it was that good. Ms. Kramer's character development was fantastic and well-rounded. They became people I had true feelings for. And, although I did not know how it would work...more
Of Kieran Kramer's "Impossible Bachelors," novel, this is the best I have read so far! The heroine is Jilly Jones who wants to show the world an exterior of steely business woman but who is at heart as soft as melted butter. She is also a runaway wife or so she thinks. Next door, Captain Steven Arrow is celebrating his resignation from the navy. They live on Dreary Street in Mayfair which is considered the unluckiest. Certainly the saddest people live here and the London fog seems far worse as t...more
Well...
This book was all over the place. Almost like the author couldn't decide what core characteristics she wanted her characters to have, so she gave them all of them. I did like it, I think.
I did enjoy the character of Otis, he of the flamboyant shoes and flitting about the place tendencies.
Unlike the first two books of this series, there was NOT a "soaptastic" scene in a ballroom. HOWEVER, the "plot twist" came straight out of Port Charles. I love a bit of drama and angst, but if I laugh...more

Kieran Kramer's 3rd installment of her Impossible Bachelors series appropriately titled Cloudy with a Chance of Marriage made me giggle, snort, chuckle, sigh, blush and gasp while reading it.
This book is not even close to the children's book about food falling out of the sky. It's a love story (ok, scones and tea are as foodie as it gets). It'll make you laugh, cry, gasp and cheer the hero and heroine on to their HEA.

This is number three in The Impossible Bachelors Series. It had some good points and some bad points. One of the plot devises that Author's use periodically is a woman leaves her husband and pretends to be someone else. I understand why the woman has to hide her identity but in a number of cases she allows the Hero to think that she is a Virgin. For some reason this annoys me not the identity part because there is usually a good reason for that but the Virginity part. Maybe its because one is f...more

The second in the series of Impossible Bachelors I have read. I read When Harry Meet Molly months ago. This couple while having somewhat more upper crust backgrounds also have money troubles which force them to reach out to their neighbourhood and each other. It makes for a matchmaking heroine with a secret that makes her resistant to the hero. It makes both a good story and leaves opportunities for character development. I enjoyed reading this book.

Once again, Kieran Kramer has captured my attention and my heart with a light-hearted, funny, yet still sizzling read. In the other two books, I'd always thought Captain Arrow was the Impossible Bachelor who was the most elusive, so I was dying to read this. I wasn't disappointed! Right from the start, Stephen was charming-- rogueish, yet with enough hints of being a hero that I forgave him, and Jilly was definitely a perfect match (since opposites attract!). She was fiery but not overly so, hea...more
Cloudy with a chance of Marriage by Kieran Kramer
Jilly is on her own, with her bookstore on a drury street in England. One of her
neighbors is a Captain and that's all he needs is the beautiful woman running the
book store, just next door. Plays and balls they enjoy going to together and he
enjoys lovemaking with her at the back of the store. The street needs more activity
to come so the stores can thrive once again. A street fair just might be the answer.

Cute historical romance. On an aptly named street in London we meet a cast of characters with interesting backgrounds and bleak futures. Until one of them decides that holding a street fair will change all that. Women in historical times were not their own person and society still sets the rules. Interestingly a diary which when our herione has begun to read and use what she has read actually turns out quite differently in the end.
The back-talk between the two characters was hilarious, as were most of the supporting characters. Unfortunately, there seemed to be something missing in the heroine's make-up. I just couldn't bring myself to really care what happened to her. And the hero seemed too back and forth. One minute he was protecting his 'fiancee' and the next, he was completely ignoring her. I love this series, but this was the sore thumb of the bunch.
Cloudy with a Chance of Marriage is the story of Captain Stephen Arrow and bookstore owner, Jilly Jones. Jilly hides a dark secret: she has fled and is in hiding from an abusive husband. Using the last of her fortune, Jilly has opened a small bookstore on Dreare Street. Pronounced “dreary,” the street is all the name implies, dark, dismal, and nearly always encompassed by a thick fog. The inhabitants of the street have fallen on hard times, but the indomitable Jilly attempts to rally her beaten...more
I was quite excited reading another Kieran Kramer, so i pulled another all-nighter and didn't stop reading until i was finished... I give the book a 3.5... it wasn't the greatest but i enjoyed it quite a lot. I loved how Ms. Kramer didn't make her hero a wealthy bachelor who happens to own a very lofty title... But, it didn't dampen his attractiveness a bit... I definitely enjoyed the book, and i will definitely read it again soon...
Couldn't finish this one. I can almost never tolerate a pre-divorce-era romance with a married hero or heroine, but I pushed past learning the heroine is a runaway wife. The real trouble was just that it was boring. I think it was supposed to be funny or a parody, but I didn't laugh. I didn't care for Steven, didn't feel any romantic tension, and finally gave up about 3/4 of the way through.
I wish Kramer hadn't rushed the ending so much. By the time Arrow discovered Jilly's big secret, its resolution happens just a few pages later with hardly any time for Jilly to react, which you've been waiting for the whole book. However, I loved Dreary Street and its cast of characters, and it was a nice deviation from ballrooms and Almacks for readers who favor the Regency romance.
Okay, so it wasn't my favourite of the three Kramer books but it wasn't terrible either. I liked the fact that it wasn't all about a wealthy "ne'er do well" but rather a love story where the hero was a normal, albeit handsome, Captain of limited means. It made it more "real".
I LOVED the ending.... without wanting to spoil anything, I can only say.... "I didn't see it coming".

Third in a series and I continue to think this author must be reincarnated from those who used to write farce for the stage. So much of her books are full of coincidences that appear for the big reveal.
Never really warmed up to this impossible bachelor and his heroine. The continued use of "Prinny" continues to diminish the story. I'm also done with the cutesy nature of all the titles.
There's one more book and I'm in no hurry to find it.

Like the other two Impossible Bachelor novels, this one is fun, quirky and full of sex. I had read some very unfavorable reviews on this one in the series, but I liked it. The point of these novels seems to be very far-fetched and ridiculous, not historically accurate, so if you can handle that, then they're pretty easy and fun reads. If not, don't even pick this one up because you'll think it's dumb. =)
