I think this was my favorite out of the Gabriel sisters series! There is a little bit of suspense in this one as you don't know who is after Dr. Mercy Gabriel. Being a woman physician was tough back then, especially for a career that only men where known for. When Cholera breaks out in the small town of Idaho bend, there is no choice but to turn to Dr Mercy. People judge her for being a woman and a quaker, but Lon Mackey, the gambler, can see the character she has. He believes in her, but has de...more

I thought this was a delightful little novel. It's been such a long time since I've read Christian fiction, I decided I would read this one. While I was a little annoyed by Mercy's thees and thys, I'm told that's how the Quakers spoke. I also like that for the setting on this novel, the people were very progressive. I've had some quarrels with family members on men and women being equal. My family are Christians, so I was kind of expecting their attitudes when going into reading this novel. But ...more

Very interesting book. I really enjoyed learning about the struggles of Mercy and her daughter Indigo to overcome prejudice against Blacks, against Doctors, against people who are different and have no qualms about being true to themselves no matter what others say. We also saw the tragedy of coming home from war (this time the Civil War) through the eyes of Lon. Great book!

You shouldn't miss this story about Mercy Gabriel, a female doctor trying to gain acceptance just after the Civil War. Will she succeed? You'll be on the edge of your chair waiting to find out. This book recently won an award and deserves every bit of it.

I truly felt involved in the life of this inspiring woman doctor, Mercy Gabriel, in large part because of the wonderful writing skills of author Lyn Cote. In many parts of the story the tensions and/or emotions the characters were experiencing were palpable. Set just after the Civil War, the attitudes and prejudices that were commonplace during that period of time will seem real and vibrant, and you will probably find yourself wondering, as I did, whether you would have found the strength or had...more

A good story line..I am having difficulties with the language the main character uses. She uses the word "thee" alot, however understand this is conducive to the character and time. Just an all around sweet story. A bit heavy on the religion, but then again, it goes with the author, characters and the story, so I just need to suck it up!

Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home ...more
