I have found with series, the further you delve, the sooner you'll find a book that disappoints. Not so with the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. "Outcast" is the fourth in the series and as captivating, well-written and engaging as the three previous books.
Michelle Paver's series was written for children but appeals to people of all ages. (I have been hooked since the first word in "Wolf Brother"!)

"Outcast" was much darker and more chaotic than the rest of the books in this series so far. However, the outcasting posed an interesting problem that developed into an engaging, fast-moving plot. The dark and chaotic feeling of this book turned me off only a bit, but I think it's because of that (and that alone) I give it four stars instead of five. The thing with Seshru and Renn also annoyed me a bit... it just felt cliche, but it certainly did provide an interesting twist. I felt re

Outcast, by Michelle Paver, is the fourth book in the Chronicles Of Ancient Darkness series. Set six thousand years ago, this spellbinding story tells of the time when fourteen year-old Torak is banished from the Raven clan, his only 'family' since his mother and Fa died. Torak becomes outcast because of the terrible secret he has kept hidden for two whole moons. He bears a tattoo of the three pronged fork for snaring souls on his chest. Unfortunately, being an Outcast means that danger is aroun

This is maybe the only one of the Chronicles I will read, but....
It's greatest achievement is its depiction of living 'in nature'. This is no twee Avatar-type life, but one fraught and freighted with dangers on all levels, but that can also be very rewarding on many levels.
Renn was most astute when she said of the Viper-mage, she takes a lot of credit for things she has had no hand in. This is especially so of the catastrophe that threatens Axe Lake: a natural phenomenon More...

Another brilliant read in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. This one had me gripped from the beginning, and wouldn't let me go until I'd finished it!. Michelle Paver draws you back into the ancient world, first created in 'Wolf Brother', into a hunter-gatherer society of survival, and here we find Torak, now aged 14, struggling not only to find his way through the forest, but also to find his way through to adulthood as well.
With superb descriptions and emotive language, this is the bes More...

Just when I was beginning to think that I read every twist Ms.Paver had she came out with this. I was pleased by this book- it wasn’t too sad or bittersweet...I actually found myself relaxed and appeased by the end. even throughout the book the entire feeling was an exciting mystery that kept me reading until I finished...you are pulled into the book because it is so well written that you find yourself empathizing with each and every character in one way or another (for the sake of not spoiling

This is a fabulous, fast-paced adventure story. I love the Neolithic setting. Torak is cast out by the forest clans for committing the most taboo of acts. It is thenceforth the duty of all, from whatever clan, to kill Torak if they meet him. In order to redeem himself and be taken back by his friends in the Raven Clan he seeks out an evil Soul Eater, the Viper Mage. He must thwart her plans to assume ultimate power over the forest and all who live in it. He is secretly aided by his kinsmen Bale

This is the fourth book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series and, although its premise is much darker and heart-wrenching than the previous three, I still found it to be exceptionally well-written and engaging. Torak is outcast and falls prey to the soul sickness. He is mercilessly hunted by the other clans and forced to elude them while at the same time trying to find the Soul Eaters. Ms. Paver's descriptions of his struggles to survive are so vivid and stark, you can feel his pain a

REVIEW FOR OUTCAST BY MICHELLE PAVER
The beginning of Outcast continues a few months after the ending of Soul Eater. The main plot of the entire series, called Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, is Torak's struggles with the Soul Eaters, a group of mages/magicians/shamans, who summon demons to do their bidding and wreck havoc amongst the land. The story is set 6000 years ago in prehistoric times, and Torak's peoples are ones we might call Indians, Natives, or Aboriginals. Although the pl More...

Outcast.
I think this might be one of my favourite book in the series.
Throughout my reading, I had been surprised more than once by the sudden twist created by the author.
All of it were unpredictable.

As a result of this, he was forced to hide for his life. His chance to show the true him was a bit slim as he was appeared to be clanless as More...

I love this series and yet I find it difficult to explain why. Consequently I'm going to quote the Kirkus Reviews:
"Once again, Paver tells the tale from both animal and human perspectives, cranks up the suspense and takes her young heroes through deadly encounters with storms, bears,...and spirits, then closes with the revelation of further challenges to be faced in battling the Soul Eaters. Compelling from first page to last."
Yup, that pretty much hits the nail on

The fourth book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Series. Torak's secret has been discovered and he is now an outcast, clanless, and hunted by all. He is alone and on the run with no one except Wolf by his side. Tainted by soul-sickness he finds himself drawn to the Soul Eaters. Can Renn find him in time? Can she save him? Will her own secret tear them apart forever? This series continues to be full of excitement, adventure, and the power of loyalty and friendship.

The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series continues with another action-packed installment. Torak has been branded as a Soul Eater by the evil Viper Mage and according to clan law he is cast out. Any person who sees him must kill him and he's not to get help from anyone. Torak, soul-sick and confused, journeys to the Lake where the Otter Clan lives and there he discovers the source of his illness- Seshru the Viper Mage. He knows he'll have to defeat her to save his own life and protect the lives

When u start reading this series , there is a pull , an urge to finish everything . As the plot gets intense you just dwell deeper in the world of Torak . Just amazing !!! There is not a boring sequence in the book .This starts off in a very sad note , but just great . One can never point out one from this series as the best . Each and every book is amazing . This series will be my favourite :-)

Makin bagus!
Luv this book...nuhun buat ijul yg dah meminjamkan

My now I was hooked on this series (Well, long before now, actually!), but I’m sure I’d caught up with the series by now and was eagerly waiting this one, and brought it on it’s day of release. Once again, a very good read, one of my favourite series to date. I remember continuously being fascinated by the lore in Torak’s world.

I actually read this book first (even tho...as I just found out, it's the 4th book in the series). It seemed to work OK, but now that I read the synopsis of the previous books I think I would do well to read the previous books. Overall though I really enjoyed it and can't wait to get into the beginning of the series. :)

So far so freaking good!
A good page turner!
and I'm so sad that I'm already on the fourth so close to ending!
and also this book and what has followed up it to is similar to the cartoon movie Tarzan! I was just watching the movie and realized that!

In this installement of the series, Torak has been cast out and declared "clanless". He is hunted by the clans and the Viper Mage. He does a lot of growing in this book and his journey's twists and turns lead to unexpected events.

It was an interesting read. Started slowly, but then got you hooked. Only realised at the end, that this is the fourth book in the series. I will be looking for the first three and last 2 of the series. Would reccomend.

Paver write a great adventure in every book . . . and I swear, each one is better than the last. More complex plotting, more unexpected twists.
I continue to like the fact that Torak just can't quite finish an adventure without Renn . . . every hero whose destiny is to save the world should have an extra smart extra tough girl at his side!

A fun, quick read (I started it four hours ago and have now finished it) much like the rest of the series. I like the originality and consistency of the world Michelle Paver has created.
