Summary: Anansi the spider finds a magical stone that puts him to sleep. Anansi decides to use the rock to trick his friends out of their food. But throughout the story Little Bush Deer observes all Anansi's trickery and in the end outwits Anansi and returns all the food to the rightful owners.

This book was illustrated beautifully and is a lot of fun. I would recommend this book for these particular ages because you could do a study on spiders, learning a lesson from your actions, sharing, and folklore. You could also do a study on the different versions from culture to culture in 5th grade or older.

Trickster tale and an accumulative tale. Anansi the spider outwits animals, but the deer outwits him in the end. Use with other trickster tales or unit on Africa. Also can be used with unit on positive character traits.

This book was really cute and in this one Anansi gets tricked right back. As with Kimmel's other books, the illustrations are fantastic.

This is just a wonderful story. No, as my friend points out, it is never explained how or why the moss-covered rock works its magic, but who cares? A fun fresh retelling of a trickster-get-his-comeuppance tale.

I used to read this to my brother and do the voices. It is a fun story and I remember how much he would laugh when we read it.
