I have a problem lately with the contemporaries in this series. I don't know why, there seems to be something missing. Don't ask me what, it's just a feeling. That doesn't mean I don't like books written by JAK, and that especially doesn't mean I didn't like this book. Because I did. A lot, I just wish it was written by her alter ego, I think it would've worked better as a historical.
Why? Because it had a rather Old World feel to me. First with Fallon's impeccable manners, his being a little of...more

Only think that makes this book a bit less likeable? Well if you've read some of the arcane books that occur after this one, then you've already met our main characters Fallon and Isabella and, without spoiling anything, it does lessen the rosy glow of their love story somewhat.
Other than that it was a great JAK book, typical of her writing, all of her usual elements are there. I secondary characters in this book are particularly entertaining as we explore the town of Scargill Cove.

WARNING FOR FIRST TIME KRENTZ READERS: I know this officially kicks off a new series, but let's be honest - it doesn't. Not only does it not kick off a new series, but even having read all the ones before this in the last 18 months, I still had moments of, "Wait. What?" trying to remember everything. I STRONGLY recommend reading the other contemporary books first.
That said, I was so excited to get Fallon's book finally. I know I can't be alone in that. And, it didn't disappoint. I think Isabella...more

This book has all the potential for a great paranormal romantic suspense with a master villain pulling strings behind the scenes, the Arcane Society policing the Talents and the Jones family. Unfortunately it has one major downfall which is a heroine that is just too stupid to live. It really pushes the bounds of creditability when Isabella Valdez, who was raised by a conspiracy theorist, would be as naïve as she is in this book.

Isabella, conspiracy theorist on the run, meets Fallon of J&J, who helps her protect the world from paranormal weapons. Happening upon a Krentz/Quick book published after approximately 1998 is the most efficient method to make me hate myself for half a day. I know- I KNOW- that the hero and heroine will be identical to the last book. I KNOW that the paranormal world will become even more complicated and even less interesting than the previous book. I KNOW that the writing will be more tell a...more
I have been anticipating the Fallon Jones book for a long time. Usually when this happens I find that the anticipation hopelessly outclasses the reality, and I am disappointed. NOT THIS TIME! Isabella is a wonderful character who meshes so well with Fallon that I raced through the book in one afternoon to see how their relationship developed. I loved her smile, her warmth, and her wonder as she found a place for herself in Scargill Cove, a place where she fit for the first time in her life. Most...more
In Too Deep is the 10th in the Arcane Society novels. These have been written under Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle. These are easy to read novels that have interesting paranormal characters. If you have read any of the other Arcane Society novels you know what your going to get with this one. So set back and enjoy the visit into Fallon's life.

Fallon Jones is the latest in the long line of Jones men to be considered a "conspiracy theorist" just because he can connect dots and sees patterns where others don't. His talent is part of the reason that most of the Arcane Society (an elite group of paranormal families) and even some of his family think that he is cracking up.
Luckily, he has lately acquired an assistant, Isabella Valdez whose smile lights up his life and who doesn't seem to be afraid of him or believe that he is going crazy....more

This is Fallon Jones' story. It was nice to get a glimpse into Fallon's life beyond his gruff and moody exterior.
In the first book of this new trilogy, we meet Isabella Valdez - the perfect counterpart to Fallon's abrupt nature. Her personality brings a light quality to the story line that adds the perfect balance when fleshing out Fallon's history.

Looking Glass Trilogy Book One (but still part of Arcane Society series): Fallon Jones has set up shop in Scargill Cove, Northern California, a place that seems to attract those with paranormal abilities, probably because of its location as a convergence of multiple powerful forces. He has been content in his isolation and rejection from his peers until his life is turned upside down by an organizational whirlwind who is using the name Isabella Valdez and has considerable talents of her own. The...more
Multiple mysteries are investigated. Some felt incomplete. Not enough relationship interaction and development.
BACKGROUND & STORY BRIEF:
Fallon Jones’ continuing enemy is Nightshade. When one Nightshade leader is killed, another replaces him. Nightshade consists of several independent groups that make drugs to enhance psychic abilities. Fallon and his partners/buddies had some success against Nightshade groups in prior books with more to come in future books. This book is about other bad guys...more

I've long been a fan of Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle/Amanda Quick. She's a great writer of paranormal romantic suspense, though I prefer her historical novels (Amanda Quick). She just has a way of sucking you into the story immediately.
This book was good, but not spectacular. The romance burned hot and fast and so it seemed not as believable because of that.
The suspense didn't involve both characters, it had to do with the society and ongoing bad guys who are keeping the series going. Isabella...more

Arcane Society 10. Looking Glass Trilogy 1.

Fallon Jones, a man used to being alone, is bemused to find her organizing his office as they deal with a Victorian clock that can double as a weapon. It is one of many constructed using glass that no one has been able to replicate. In reading my first paranormal novel, I found an engaging story line featuring Isabela Valdez seeking a safe place to live in Scargill Cove. Powers and talents and fogs draw the reader into the world of nexus energy. Populated with cleverly drawn characters, the story moves with energy and mystery.

Comfort food. I like the Arcane series. When I was deciding which book to bring home from work yesterday, I chose this one exactly because I knew what I would be getting. No having to figure out a new mythos, no wondering what the heck was going on. No wondering if the book was going to be a total dud. JAK is a solid writer and her stories all have a similar feel. I like the mechanics of her writing. I like the way the stories evolve.

I am not familiar with Jayne Ann Krentz, but love Metaphysical topics. I just began this book today. It appears to be part of a series the author writes about a Private Investigation firm called Jones and Jones, who solves cases through their psychic abilities. It says "An Arcane Society Novel" on the bottom of the cover, so Ms. Krentz must write other books, and does these as a special series. I am only on page 96, but already like the way many people in the town of Scargill Cove have psychic p...more
I LOVE FALLON!!! okay... objectively maybe this book doesn't deserve 5 stars... though it is of course as awesome as all the Arcane Society novels are... but i just loved this one way more because you finally really get to find out about Fallon Jones... first off... i found it slightly disconcerting to find out he is a fairly good looking man in his prime... you never really get much description of him from the other books except for the impression that he's a grumpy anti social man... and it wa...more
Fallon Jones, a known recluse and investigator of the paranormal, operates his own agency known as J&J with his prime client the mysterious Arcane Society. Mr. Jones is not only directly related to the family who has historically controlled the Arcane Society, but is also well-known for his own paranormal gift of finding the patterns within the chaos of the universe around him. The only problem is that this "gift" which has passed down patriarchly through the Jones' has also led each of his...more
Ms. Krentz has a deft hand at mixing romance and with an interesting plot. The romance is definitely the main drive of this, and all the rest of the Arcane novels, but it never stands alone. This book, like the rest in the series, is equal parts romance, detective story, and paranormal thriller.
Fallon Jones, head of the Jones and Jones detective agency, is a driven man with the psychic power to spot patterns, no matter how well hidden. He's been isolating himself from the world for so long that...more

I didn't know whether to round up or down with this one. I know my ratings have gotten more lenient in the past year so I thought about it and decided, based on my earlier criteria for a 3 star read, this is closer to that than a four star. 3 star = average, enjoyable, worth the time, but nothing to make it unique. That fits this book fairly well.
I enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the set-up for the next book(s). I thought the mystery and the characters in this book were interesting, al...more

In Too Deep is the next chapter in the Arcane Society series, the first book in the Looking Glass Trilogy, and is Fallon Jones ‘story. Fallon has moved his headquarters to the small Northern California town of Scargill Cove. After arriving in Scargill Cove Isabella Valdez has become Fallon’s assistant. She is on the run from people who want to kill her. Fallon is under attack by elements of the Arcane Society that want to remove the Jones from positions of power in the Society. The Arcane Society novels are in two different eras: the historicals written by Amanda Quick and the contemporaries written by Jayne Ann Krentz. The Arcane Society is a society that does paranormal research. The novels include typical romance, suspense, but have a twist of the paranormal. The paranormal part is interesting, but not "creepy ghost" paranormal. It usually involves psychic powers and abilities. The main characters of the novels usually have some sort of paranormal "talent" (as the n...more
Ms Krentz just keeps on ticking along, with another enjoyable, agreeable entry in her wide-ranging, long-running Arcane Society series.
Fallon Jones finally meets his match in this one, and Isabella Valdez is an absolute poppet! I loved her!!
And Fallon is nicely-fleshed out as a character. He is no longer the robotic loner, who is always on the look-out for whatever doesn't fit.
The mystery part of the story is fairly straight forward, and also sets up the next two books.

I did not realize until I picked up this book, that Ms. Krentz also writes under the pseudonyms of Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick. I have read romances by Amanda Quick and if memory serves me well, I liked them.
I enjoy a good romantic suspense novel and I was not disappointed with this novel. However, I like stories with believable plot lines. This one crosses the line in a few places for me. I couldn’t really buy into a lot of the situations the characters got themselves into (and out of). Havi...more

The Arcane Society books are such comfort reads for me. This one was no different. They are like watching a favorite movie on a rainy day; you may know what's coming but that doesn't diminish your enjoyment of it. Like many, I've been waiting for Fallon's story. I was a bit disappointed that he and Isabella just fell into a relationship so quickly. I was expecting a little more fight from Fallon. But in the end I liked them as a couple and I loved that Isabella is the perfect counterpoint for Fa...more

The Arcane Society books are dependable, light and enjoyable. There's mystery, romance, excitement and some paranormal components which make for perfect easy summer reading.
Fallon Jones has been happily living in Scargill Cove, away from civilization, from complications, from people for years. He's more than content to run Jones & Jones Investigations from this small remote town.

Everyone who knows me knows that I live and breathe JAK. She is my all-time favorite author. This book, In Too Deep, is Fallon's book. Now, Fallon has been mentioned in so many books I can't even list them all. He's the chaos-theory talent who is in charge of the current day Jones and Jones, the psychic detective agency. I can't tell you how I licked my chops when this book came out.
I liked it, but I wanted more from Fallon. His match, Isabella, seems to take over all the action. I will read it...more

I really liked the premise of this book. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the first book of the Looking Glass trilogy is actually a smaller series in the middle of the Arcane Society series, which means that I lost A LOT of the background information that I really needed to be 100% invested in this novel. That definitely colors my rating a little bit. However, I enjoyed the book enough that I am interested in going back to start at the beginning of the Arcane Society novels, which is excitin...more
