All winter long, those darn squirrels annoyed grumpy Old Man Fookwire with their antics. But now that it's spring and his beloved birds are back, nothing can spoil his good mood--until a cat named Muffins arrives next door. Muffins terrifies the birds and interrupts Fookwire's painting. He even gives the squirrels wet willies! How can this bully be stopped? Someone had bet...more

This book is laugh-aloud funny from the hilarious illustrations to the names - Mr. Fookwire, the floogle bird - to the situations - "the sneaky cat pounced on an unsuspecting group of squirrels and gave them all wedgies - not an easy thing to do because generally squirrels do not wear underpants." (Imagine the picture that goes with that line!) Mr. Fookwire is a crotchety old man who loves birds, but is continually confounded by those darn squirrels. The squirrels finish the old man's crossword...more

We read Those Darn Squirrels! two years ago, so this book seemed vaguely familiar. I thought that we might've read it before, but our girls were sure we hadn't. So it wasn't until I went to post my review that I realized that this book is a sequel. Just another reason why I love Goodreads.

In any case, this was a strange, but humorous story. The narrative was fun to read aloud and the illustrations are hilarious. We loved the picture of Muffins all wet and it reminded me of Mélanie Watt's illust...more

Squirrel wedgies!! I mean, really, any book that discusses squirrel wedgies is going to be a hit with first graders. Since I have only reluctantly become fond of the cats that I happen to live with, I'm not at all sad that the bad guy cat is defeated by the clever squirrels and helpful birds.

I totally enjoyed Those Darn Squirrels! and while this second book is not quite as strong, these two books will certainly appeal to kids who like ridiculous and funny picture books.

And I want to know if th...more

Mr. Fookwire enjoys his solitary existence on the edge of town. He enjoys nothing except springtime and the birds that come with it. Having to deal with the squirrels was a nuisance, but what was he going to do? When Little Old Lady Hu moves in next door with her cat, Muffins, his solitary life enjoying the springtime birds is over.

Muffins quickly begins to scare the birds and torture the squirrels. He gives them wet willies, noogies and wedgies. He even ties two squirrels tails together! Mr. Fo...more

Adam Rubin takes the picture book to an edgy place.
The MC's name, Mr. Fookwire, sounds inappropriate to say.

The cat gives the squirrels wedgies. The squirrels are not wearing underpants. And as a result Daniel Salmieri has burnt an image of squirrel cheeks in my mind which I know I can never erase. You can't unsee a squirrel with an atomic wedgie. You just can't.

I also enjoyed asking my daughter - do you know what a noogie is? do you know what a wet willie is? - and then showing her each. Sor...more

While I rated the first title "Those Darn Squirrels" as "lukewarm", my children apparently LOVED it because when I brought this one home it jumped ahead of a whole basket of books and was met with great excitement. I really liked this story where our grumpy friend Old Man Fookwire again enjoys his birds and is agitated by the squirrels. Enter the new neighbor, Mrs. Hu and her cat Muffins--"he was a real jerk." This bully brings the group together for a common purpose. As Old Man Fookwire would s...more

This sequel to Those Darn Squirrels continues the story of the squirrels and Old Man Fookwire. Old Man Fookwire has been waiting for spring when his beloved birds would return. The winter has been long with only the squirrels for company (and trouble). After a pleasant spring morning spent painting birds, Fookwire is shocked to hear kabooms coming from the house next door. Little Old Lady Hu was moving in along with her evil cat, Muffins. She had moved to the country so that Muffins could make s...more

The old man, the birds and the squirrels have become friendly when a new neighbor and her cat move next door and disturb the balance. The cat quickly becomes the neighborhood bully, chasing the birds and giving wedgies to the squirrels(You have to read the book to enjoy this one!) Our clever squirrels plan to take down the cat with the help of their bird friends. The result is hilarious.

I am deducting a star for making the cat the villain. As anyone who has ever lived with one knows "Cats Rule, Dogs Drool" :D

This is humor for elementary school boys, complete with "wet willies", "wedgies" and all.The language is snappy and funny. But unfortunately this is in a picture book format and a lot of those boys won't touch this. Why isn't Rubin doing graphic novels?

I wish I hadn't exhausted these books, they are so great. I want there to be more. The cat gets mean and the animals booby trap it into getting soaked. It loses all it's puffyness, and looks like smooshy face from next door. Old Man Fookwire still loves birds. The animals still snack to keep it moving at meetings, and are mechanically inclined. Yes! Yes! Yes!

Those darn squirrels are at it again, giving Old Man Fookwire grief and generally having a good time. The twist is Old Lady Hu's cat Muffins, a real beastly beast. The hijinks come along fast and furious (or is that "furryous"); watch out for the squirrel wedgies as they may give your kids the giggle-fits. Another fun read for both the kids and the adults.

THE PERFECT BOOK for a story time with kindergarten or first-graders. Old Man Fookwire doesn't like the squirrels in his yard because they pesky to the birds, but when Muffins the cat moves in next door, the squirrels and the birds team up to show this bully who's boss. It's the worth read for the illustration on page 22 alone. Kids will love this.

Old Man Fookwire is grumpier than ever. Spring arrives, along with the birds, and he finally cheers up only to have to deal with the new neighbor's bothersome cat. Fortunately, the squirrels put the neighbor's cat in its place and restore calm to the neighborhood.

themes: birds, cats, cleverness, neighbors, squirrels

My kids asked me to read this book three times the day we brought it home from the library and I didn't mind at all. The illustrations of Old Man Fookwire made us laugh every time we turned the page. I highly recommend this book just to see what it looks like when a squirrel receives a wedgie. Very Funny.

preschool story time; vocabulary building, narrative skills, print motivation

This book is about a man who loved warm weather and was sick of winter. The cat next door terrorizes the squirrels that the old man loves. Silly vocabulary and preschool kids will love this book. It is a bit wordy

I love this book, really I did! The artwork had a lot of hidden detail (like the letter to the Mayor you can read, and Fookwire's Memoir) that I loved. And any book with lines like "They ate cheese puffs and drank ginger ale to help them think" is a good book in my opinion.
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
This is a sequel/companion novel to Those Darn Squirrels!. A cranky man, some darn squirrels, a very friendly new neighbor, and one annoying cat make for a fun read.

Squirrels wreak havoc for Old Man Fookwire by eating his pie, chasing the birds. Then Little Old Lady Hu moves next door with her cat Muffins, who causes her own trouble, until she gets doused by water by birds and squirrels. The cat never goes outside again.

Not my favorite of the "Those Darn Squirrels" books, but still funny with great art by Salmieri. (This is also possibly the only picture book out there that shows you what squirrel buttocks look like. I'll let you decide if that's a plus or a minus.)
Jeanne
The grumpy old man's not happy when Mrs. Hu moves in next door with her cat. Neither are the squirrels. But they figure out how to get the cat back for all the bad things he does to them. And then they all live happily ever after. Sort of.
Jodie
Humorous story about a grumpy old man, some squirrels, some birds, and a new cat. Could be used for problem/solution scenerios, or how to deal with a bully. Pictures connect with the cat and the reader will enjoy what they bring to the story.
Heidi
Ack! This is the 2nd book and I haven't read the 1st. I bet it was funny, too. A very good school-age choice. They would love this in a read-aloud or lap-read, and it would probably be funny to read in a storytime (if I can keep a straight face).
Maria
The fun continues, but you might find yourself explaining to small children about wedgies, wet willies and noggies. If they already know about these ways to torture and tease... you can avoid the explainations and just enjoy the book.
Debbie
I was a little disappointed by this one. I read it to Alex when he was 5. He loves cats and has really liked "Those Darn Squirrels". It's still a cute book, but just isn't quite a good as the others by the same author.

I wanted to read Dragons Love Tacos, but the library did not have it so I got this book by the same author. Read it to my 5-7 yr old YMCA campers and they loved it. Will definitely seek out this author again.

When a mischievous cat moves in next door, the squirrels devise a plan to teach him a lesson. Just as good as the first. Such expressive features in the illustrations! Kids will want to hear this one again.
Stephanie Jewett
Even if the rest of this book were no good (not true at all- very fun, like the first one), the illustration of the squirrels receiving wedgies from the cat would make it brilliant. Laughed. Out. Loud.
Magila
If you loved Those Darn Squirrels!, you will love this book too. It wasn't quite as stupendous as the original, but it was pretty darn good. Introducing a neighboring cat as an antagonist was an obvious, but awesome addition. You cannot help but laugh out loud as the squirrels put their formidable intelligence towards solving the problem of their pesky neighbor.

And then there is the old man, who is so lovable that it is out of control (considering he looks an awful lot like a bird). Out. Of. Con...more

It had the potential to be great but I think it fell flat at the end. I did enjoy the squirrel wedgies. I guess there is a bully message in the story as well.
