Captain Sky Blue by Richard Egielski is the story of Jack and his favorite toy, who speaks pilot talk, and a wild adventure.
Jack receives Captain Sky Blue as a Christmas present, and together they build an airplane for Sky to fly. One day Sky snatches Jack's hat off his head but the wind blows it away. Having retreived it, Sky's plane is struck by lightning and he parachutes out (with the hat). Splashing into the ocean, Sky's inhaled into the whales blowhole, then catapulted away wh More...

This is such a delightful read that younger kids and especially those who love planes will really enjoy. Young readers will love going on an adventure with Captain Sky Blue, as he tries to find his way home to Jack. Captain Sky Blue loves his best pal Jack, his blue and yellow plane and flying. When Captain Sky Blue becomes lost in a thunderstorm, and finds he's far away from home, he sets out to find a way to return home.
On his journey home, he finds himself back at Santa's workshop. More...

This book was interesting in that it introduces students to the terminology and jargon that certain professions use (in this case, pilots). As a teacher, you would have to be sure to introduce the vocabulary that is provided in the front of the book before reading the actual story, though, so students can put the book into context. Otherwise, it does not make sense and could be confusing. However, I loved the adventure Captain Sky Blue goes on in the book. As a follow-up activity, you could have

Fantastic art, but the story, while potentially cute, has problems. The author includes a glossary at the front of the book to help us non-pilots understand the "pilot talk" that peppers the story. Thank you, but it is really disruptive to have to leaf back after every page to see what a word means so that I can explain it to my son. This does not work for me and he got bored. A disappointing effort from this talented man (is not BUZ one of the greatest picture books ever???)

While the author's use of pilot lingo is clever, there are not enough context clues from either the illustrations or the text to help readers figure out these terms. The glossary helps, but the story isn't long enough to warrant referring to it multiple times.

The story line was fairly weak...illustrations were okay. I did love the incorporation of pilot lingo and Jack loved the sneezing whale!

Reading this with my little guy, age 4, who seems to really like the book - mostly I think he loved the christmas tree on the cover and the fact that the boy in the book is named Jack.
Captain Sky Blue is the toy star of the story and goes on quite an adventure. My little guy loves it.

The story is chock-full of pilot jargon and concludes with a helpful "Pilot Talk" glossary.

This would be a great book if you were teaching a unit on airplanes and flying. The unit could be multidisciplinary where students learn how planes fly, what it's like to fly, and how pilots communicate. The book introduces several of the terms and language that pilots use to communicate with each other. After the story, students could write about their experiences with flying, or write a story in which they are pilots and must use "pilot talk."
