I don't get it. A lot of folks talk about how lovable these books are and OHOHOHOHOH AMAZING GRAPHIC NOVELS YES, but I don't see it. It's boring, predictable, filled with un-relatable characters, and just sort of trite.
I wasn't nerdy enough to think it was amazing every time he used OOOOOO VIDEO GAME FONT and said LEVEL UP.
I'm too... not an emotional moron, for lack of a better term, to find any of the characters (with the exception of some minors) relatable or likable in any way. If the grand...more

I am reviewing these all at once. There isn't enough to differentiate each volume to warrant multiple reviews.
Scott Pilgrim is a fairly well told story about a hipster kid dealing with love and fighting in Canada. It is certainly flawed, but ends up being pretty entertaining.
The art in Scott Pilgrim is basically appealing, in a simplistic way, but tends to detract more from the book than it adds. The characters are plain and are not very well differentiated from each other, causing scenes to be...more

Everyone brings a context to their book reviews. Someone who has worked in the fast food industry, for example, brings a very different perspective to a review of Fast Food Nation than someone who hasn’t. For me, I bring two contexts to this review: (1) I broke my rule of always reading the book before watching the film adaptation (Scott Pilgrim vs the World was one of my favorite movies of 2010); and (2) I was (am?) an awkward, video-game obsessed, neurotic-about-girls guy – so I’m sorta pre-di...more

What began as a reading of the first three books for a class project resulted in me finishing the entire series. The series is the story of Canadian Scott Pilgrim, who meets an American girl named Ramona Flowers. Scott leads a simple life, he is in a band, he lives with a roommate, nobody ever bothers him besides his sister. However, when he meets Ramona his life changes. In order to date Ramona, Scott must defeat all of her evil ex-...more

Rather than rate each book individually, it made more sense to review them as a contingent.
I got into the Scott Pilgrim series backwards. I follow a few webcomic artists' Twitterfeeds, and there was mention of buying Scott Pilgrim books from Brian Lee O'Malley. Naturally, I checked out Scott Pilgrim, and found out about the film. After seeing the film and being left in awe, the next natural progression was to read the books.

I'm relieved that there's a 'bundle' list of these books to spare me from reviewing them all individually... which wouldn't be a problem save that I read them so quickly that some parts blur together.
Okay, context: I'd read Scott Pilgrim #1 through #4 or possibly #5 a few years ago when a friend lent them to me, and thought they were fantastic. With the rapidly approaching UK release of the film I thought it was about time for me to buy my own copies and read the final book(s).

I really satisfy with both comic book and movie of Scott Pilgrim vs the World, they are really awesome. I watch the movie before reading the book, but the story line is pretty much same. The comic books have deeper background story for 2 protagonist Scott and Ramona. And it's good, because it can give strong support to the main line.

this is the complete story of Scott Pilgerm, a canadien slacker with relashionship troubles which varies from cheating on girlfriends, ex's, evil ex's to evil ex's of ex's.
this set of graphic novels is set in snowy Toronto, Canada and seen through the eyes of male protaginist Scott Pilgrem. these books have a strong cartoon style based on various manga (japanese comics) and have are full of videogame refrences, set up as a videogame than a actull story.

These six books were short enough that I'll put in a rating for the whole set together.
They're definitely quirky, fun graphic novels with a crapton of really creative plot & story devices (literary devices?), including beaucoup video game and anime references. I imagine the books would be tough to understand if one didn't have any exposure to geek culture for the last 20 years. All-in-all, I appreciated them for these creative bits, even if the style could get a little over-the-top sometimes...more

"Hey guys! Remember Street Fighter? Remember old video games? Remember that, guys?"
That's basically the main gimmick this book uses to exploit its audience (nerds). It starts out pretty promising - the way the love interest meets the protagonist is really interesting and the whole concept of battling evil ex-boyfriends is pretty fresh. And the humor sometimes works really well.
By the second book, however, all the freshness is gone and slogging through the remaining books feels like a chore. Also...more

The Scott Pilgrim books pass the highest test for graphic novels/comic books that I know of: there are several panels that I want to silkscreen onto t-shirts.
There may be moments where the twee-ness gets a little too adorable, but like the hot summers in Texas, it feels churlish to complain: you should know what you're getting into with this. It's a fun story, with themes of sin and forgiveness--ultimately it reminds me of Le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea, with the conclusion of accepting your sinf...more

After some mixed reactions (mostly during book one) I can officially say that by the end of the sixth volume I enjoyed the Scott Pilgrim series. I found them to be charming and sweet and romantic. Surprisingly, I found them to very rarely be cheesy, an impresseive feat given the genre of literature: Teen Romance Manga??
At the same time, reading the books I understood that I am a little too old for them. Don't get me wrong, I devoured these books with gusto. But I can't help but feel that if I ha...more

The Scott Pilgrim series is one of the greatest series I have ever read. The world of Scott Pilgrim is an amazing world that you will quickly get lost in. The video game feel of the series is really neat and lets video game players feel right at home. There are many references to video games that include Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. I loved every single page of all six books and I would definitly recommend this to all of my friends. Scott Pilgrim actually teaches you about relation...more
Started checking these out from the library as it was cheaper than going back to see the movie a second time. My commitment to reading the whole series grew with each book, and by far my favorite section is the summer between evil-ex-fights in book 4. The latter books, in which it comes to light what a complete schmuck Scott really is and how, despite being 'the greatest fighter in the province', he is completely reliant on everyone around him for everything else -- well, it's the sort of group...more
Okay, so I finally got around to reading this series after ignoring all the hype, seeing the movie, and brushing off all the glowing recommendations from friends and colleagues. If someone were to ask me why I'm reading it now, I'd say that it was partly because my curiosity finally got the best of me, and partly because I only had a staff discount on graphic novels for a few more days and I figured if not now, when then?

Scott Pilgrim is a graphic novel about a 23 year old jobless bass player who is dating a high school girl until he meets the girl of his dreams. He has reoccurring dreams about a girl rollerblading through his life and after finally meeting her in person, discovers he has to battle her seven evil exes in order to win her over and possibly live happily ever after.

Not only one of the best comics (graphic novels?) around, but one of the most important and poignant literary works of the last and this decade, the Scott Pilgrim Collection is a faithful and endearing portrait of a generation, my generation.

I broke a cardinal book-reading rule and saw the movie before reading the book -- but in this case, it worked for me. For one thing, it helped me keep track of the multitude of characters which were often drawn similarly to one another, and for another, since the movie was done so well, I didn't feel either could be improved by being more like the other. And most importantly, the quirky tone and the unique characters were preserved from the book to the movie.

OMG, these books were so amazing!!!! I read them after i saw the film. while i thoroughly enjoyed the film, i have to say, the books were so much better.
there's a lot of stuff that was left out in the movie but then there's just so much happening in the books that it would've been impossible to incorporate all of those priceless moments.

Started reading these at the beginning of the summer and finished them as soon as the 6th book came out in print. Pretty much got scarily obsessed with them. Like Knives-fandom-of-Sex-Bob-ombs level of obsession. I was Ramona for Halloween. The road trip I was on when the 6th book came out ended in Toronto where we went to both Honest Ed's and Sneaky Dee's. I know, I have a problem.

As a child of the 80's, I am easily sold on novels featuring 8-bit references and effects. This series made things even better by being well written and artistically appealing. If you've only seen the movie and haven't yet read the books, let me tell you that you are missing out on so much.
To summarize my thoughts on this series, it's basically a boy dealing with a girl's past ex's, but instead of dealing with them emotionally like we all have in our lives, he deals with them in a physical sense...more

I was surprised by this collection. I thought they would just be light fare since that is pretty much what the movie was, but it turns out that the books are actually really well written. The drawing style is nice, but the first couple of books the style is a little rough. The best part about this series is definitely the characters. They are all developed very well. I went through the emotional roller coaster right along with them. I would recommend this to anyone that loves random geeky refere...more
This is the kind of series that I envision that I will happily re-read many times in my life. To me, it's about growing, changing, learning, and loving. While the heavy topics are approached with comedy, the seriousness of them is never played with. The character's behaviors are realistic, the relationship dynamics between romantic, familial, and friend relationships are complicated but not confusing, and while the series approaches life and love as though the concepts are a game, it does so in...more
This 'review' is for the whole bundle, all 6 volumes.
If I would ever describe something as 'random', it would be to describe this Canadian gem.
I liked how the writer jumped from scene to scene, and how he really managed to build his characters so well even so. I also loved the witty-off-balloon captions (which I kept reading in Bill Hader's voice), and the indirect humor, that some people might find stupid but I found it to be genius.

Much better than the film (where spastic Scott is replaced by generic Michael Cera and Ramona becomes a cardboard cutout), the Scott Pilgrim series was generally enjoyable and rather clever. I hold a particular fondness for the twins/robots, Julie, and the wonderful line near the end that reads something like, "His brain doesn't need any more damage from you!" "Wait, more damage?"
That said, there are a couple things to note. First, the characters are very two-dimensional, except maybe Scott and...more

Funny, entertaining, and great illustrations - good read. Some excellent one-liners. I did like the drawing style however it was difficult at times to know which character it was when there was group pictures. I loved the movie so it was a sure thing that I would like the books but these are better as they build on Romana as a character and explain that they actually went out for a long time and lived together rather than the rather condensed movie. I would have preferred a happier ending for Kn...more
The first time that I heard of this series like many people, was through a commercial for the movie, which actually did rather poor in the box office. So putting those two facts together, I assumed that the entire property itself was just some crappy retro video game like series in general and paid it no mind afterward. Then some of my favorite movie reviewers started claiming that it was truly a fantastic movie and just about anyone raised on video games should go and see. So with that in mind...more

This series blew my mind with it's awesomeness.
Throughout each book, I chuckled, I "awwwwww"ed, and I was on the edge of my seat as Scott battled with ninja-like moves. The wonderfully unique, fast plot grabbed me immediately.
Each character was hilarious, unique, and I want to hug ALL OF THEM! (It would freak them out so bad...but that's only half of the reason I'd do it.) If I had to pick a favorite, it would be...um...yeah, can't pick one.
